Can't find my Meshes directory (or most of my \skyrim\data\ folder)

This is... A weird one. I am currently trying to set up jBS2BG (NPC Bodyslide diversity mod), and the instructions required me to enter the Data\meshes\actors\character\character assets folder. I went to check, and it wasn't there:

I can say with certainty that it isn't "hidden" (as in, the option that Windows File Explorer has for literally no reason), as i have turned on "see hidden files". The strange part is though, the folders seem to be there. Bodyslide picks up the folders with no problem

I'm just not sure what exactly is going on here. Game runs fine, and "verifying integrity of game files" on Steam didn't do anything.

The folders are not there usually.

They are "archived" in the bsa files.

 

Skyrim (and other Bethesda games) will try first to get the file from the folder, if the file or folder is not here, then the get it from the BSA archive.

 

You can just place the files you want in the correct folders (you can create them) and they will be used before the vanilla ones.

If you really need the files there, then you need to unpack the BSA file.

 

There are some tools to do it.

Think about a BSA file as a big ZIP file with all the files and folders inside.

Are you sure that's what's going on in this case?

 

In the first screenshot, I'm looking at my windows explorer window, where in the second, I'm looking at the "browse" option in bodyslide settings. Would all of these folders really show up to bodyslide but not Explorer if they were in a .bsa?

 

Many of the folders that are visible in photo #2 are added entirely by a mod, where other folders that are invisible have certainly been edited by other mods in my load order (as is my understanding, Skyrim keeps everything packed away, and those folders are essentially "overwrites", which are created when a mod changes something).

 

Lastly, I'm pretty sure that the folders were present at some point prior, only disappearing within the last few days, but I might be thinking of old installs and modding attempts (I have had to re-mod Skyrim several times over the past year or two)

Are you using MO2 or other mod manager that uses virtual folders? Because if that's the case then that's the reason... If not you have something very weird going on with your game/mods installation.

@whaddafuck If you are not just a troll then look at the path in Bodysldie to see where it is looking to get that Data folder with the meshes and textures folders.

 

 

In the first image he is in the Data folder of a Skyrim without any mods installed so @CPU is correct, meshes and textures are still Skyrim - Meshes.bsa and Skyrim - Textures.bsa.

 

 

@whaddafuck First make sure sure you have the requirements of the mod you are trying to install and it is for the version of Skyrim you use (i.e. LE or SE). Next try creating this folder structure manually:

Data\meshes\actors\character\character assets and do whatever the mod asked you to do.

im having this exact same problem, the "virtual folder" thing is what i am trying to understand.

when saving or loading a file into outfit studio, i have a lot of folders that are available that are not actually there in explorer

the one that makes a difference is "CALIENTES TOOLS" 

i cannot go into that folder in explorer and get the outfit project files

This limits my ability to make mods

I also can't seem to save the files to another location...

How do i get access to these "virtual folders"?
