The Cult of Dibella

I'm surprised no one has done anything related to Dibella, taking into consideration how the lore itself states that a part of the cult specializes in the erotic arts.

This is an idea I had ever since I played the Dibella mission. When I originally did that, I was hoping that as a female pc, I would be allowed to join their cult, but alas it was not. After seeing what you guys are capable of, I think it would be awesome to make Dibella's Cult a joinable faction/guild.

It would be great to have a storyline that perhaps focuses in spreading the love or one that focuses in a clash with a daedra prince. Sanguine comes to mind, given his nature for debauchery, where Dibellians see eroticism more like an art, Sanguine merely indulges in the pleasure.

Another thing that could be implemented are Dibella shrines throughout Skyrim. In these, you could find fellow worshipers and practice the arts of eroticism, giving you buffs and stuff like that. You could also find sidequest in these shrines, that lead perhaps to helping a couple rekindle their love or matchmaking, much like The Book Of Love.

Since I mentioned that Dibellians see eroticism as an art, it would be great to have pc develop erotic skills within the temple and shrines. As the pc becomes a devoted member of the cult, she could learn things like belly dancing and creative ways of stimulating eroticism.  With the skills learned she could perform in Dibella's temples as a dancer (this is also another mod I had in mind, one that lets you have a career as a dancer) or entertainer. Of course, she could also, perform other more intimate moves as well.

These are a few of the ideas I have in mind, sadly I have absolutely no experience with making mods :(! I have more in mind that, but I would like to know what you think about the main idea first. ll suggestions are more than welcome :)!

The Dibellan Order is not solely focused in that area. Not entirely. While its definitely shown and depicted in Skyrim at least in its most basic manner (the Riften situation comes to mind), you also have the more prosaic side of the Dibellan Order which is effectively Tamriel's equivalent of midwifery and dealing with other matters specific to women.

So not disagreeing with the whole Dibellan representation that some of them are practioners of the "erotic arts" though the way its mostly presented in Skyrim is that they're basically whores with a goddess to validate them....its not entirely accurate to simply focus on that aspect of the Dibellan Order as its primary aspect cause its really not. Thats just one facet of a many faceted religious order.

Now as to why modders have avoided the subject? Perhaps some don't know enough lore to tackle it well, perhaps others know too much lore and don't wish to represent too cheaply or shallowly.

Indeed, the Dibellan cult is actually very varied. Also I believe a part from the culture wants to separate itself from the erotic part, given the stigma it has generated among Tamriel (have to verify it though). Come to think of it, that sounds like a good idea for the questline.

Also something I forgot to mention when I made the original post, is that I would also like it if the mod could focus on the artistic side of the Dibellan culture. If I am correct, Dibella is a patron for painters, which could also be part of the mod. I seen already mods that allow you to paint, so it would be cool if we could add that gameplay element and perhaps bring back the Brush of True Paint. :)

Awe, fuck it! Just make a slutty ass mission where you have to lesbianically (spellchecker?) recruit other chicks into the cult, increasing their numbers, and perhaps going into competition with followers of Mara. If your married, you have chips stacked in your favor when it comes to the Mara missions. If not, or you use Dudestia's Multi-Marriage mod (THANKS, DUDESTIA!), then Dibella would suit you better. Your affiliation with the faction could be determined by the "acts" you perform, the "Daedric Quests" being the obvious way to improve your standing with either one. I suppose it's all about timing at that point. Finish one Daedric Quest right after you begin this one, to finish it before you have to do the other one's. Good stuff, DrGrimReaper. :)

Thanks :)! But in all honesty I don't see how Mara and Dibella would conflict, seems a bit tricky. The inner struggle between the Dibellan culture sounds like something we could invest in and perhaps we could add in a Daedric prince to conflict with as well!

Or we can be more lore-friendly and make it more fun overall with more options than "SEX ALL THE GIRLS!"

But hey, not all of us are teenagers driven solely by horomones :P Some of us like a bit of story to invest in as well.

I dunno if that was meant for me or the person above you. If it was meant for me, take into account that I said eroticism. A common mistake a lot of people make, is that the automatically associate erotic with sex. Eroticism is about stimulating the senses, which is why I mentioned dancing as an option, it could nevertheless involve sex as well. But in all honesty, if this mod were to happen, I would like sex to be treated in a classier way, to distinguish itself from other mods.

You could easily justify a Dibellan cult that is more rooted in eroticism than anything else simply by labeling it an offshoot or sub-cult made up of people who think Dibella's teachings should err more on the side of pleasure as an artform. It really comes down to how you want to tell your story, or if you have a story to tell to start with.

Dr. Grim's original pitch could be a fine quest with action, drama, comedy, and sex sprinkled in. AwfulArch's idea is basically what Oblivion's Claudia's Little Secret quest mod was. Semi's points could make for a whole faction quest mod that could never feature a single explicit sex scene and conform perfectly to lore and wouldn't even need a sex framework.

Personally, if you're going to have features like praying at altars for sex education, you may as well check your seriousness at the door and focus on trying to make it fun and lore-friendly.

As for why a cult of Dibella hasn't been proposed? I'm fairly sure it was some time ago, but since sex mods were in their infancy, it never went anywhere. Besides, judging from the content of the most active mod threads here, %80* of the population here prefers rape to sex, and Dibella is very much not about rape. :P

I was actually thinking more along the lines of the more experienced members of the cult teaching you these things. And I agree with you when it comes to the focus of the modding community, but hey everyone makes what they want to. If I had any skills, I would be developing this myself, but alas I do not :(!

If we're getting all psycological here, I'd say that given the royalties the Dragonborn Receives throughout her (his) time in Skyrim (Thane of every hold, Harbinger of the Companions, Archmage of the College of Winterhold, Baroness (Lord) of Volkihar Castle, owner of personal land and home(s) (Hearthfire), Listener of the Dark Brotherhood, Wielder of Berenzia's Dawnbreaker, etc, etc, etc), that everyone wants to see the Dragoborn fall down sometimes, and if that someone happens to be a rediculously hot chick, then 10 times out of 10, she's gettin' baged! :) This thread is about romance, plain and simple. And before people give me that look :dodgy: , I would love that idea a lot! How about an actual restaurant that serves you both at a table (candles and roses all that shit) and it could end the date (pre-marriage, leading up to marriage, ie: courtship) with the long awaited first kiss. We would need a modest kissing mod (and a not so modest "French" kissing mod :P) to end the date (quest) properly. Thoughts?

Would like to see a Dibella faction mod with a lot of quests in it. Not entirely erotic, because that would just make it a sleazy porn mod. Dibella is not a sex godess. She's the godess of love and beauty. It's enough if some of the quests have erotic content and the rest are just about serving Dibella's cause, preferably with some story attached. Quality above quantity is important and you shouldn't get overpowered rewards that will make you rich too quickly like in the Dibella mod for Oblivion if anyone played it. It was kinda hard from the start though.

Link to comment

Well in my concept, this mod would be aimed towards a very different playstyle. It would not give you overpowered equipment or tons of gold. To me the focus would be in practicing Dibella's concepts of beauty and love. If anything, a player focused on this faction could end up underpowered, given that the nature of this would be less combat and more art.

I never have it anywhere, which is why I like it. I've used them, but it's an awfully rare occasion when I wear them. There's a decent amount of good Dibella stuff on the Nexus, but this one just felt right, like that robe is better suited to Dibella's priests, even though Nocturnal's hot (too). The outfit they put Dibella in is also very nice... lol

Alright, let's see if I can come up with a little something of an idea, not expecting it to be used, but rather give the modder to tackle this some measure of path to follow...

So we know about the quest that is currently in place among the Dibellan priestesses, but it was rather dissapointing when it came to it's rather abrupt conclusion. Their trance was complete, surely they could accept you as a sister in thanks for accomplishing this? Alright, they're busy preparing the new sybil, would it really hurt to educate you though after you went through a bit more work than initially intended they might as well accept your request to join them. So, concluding that adventure?

Initiation.

An initiation could be anything from solving a riddle/puzzle to apprenticing for an extension under one of the priestesses. Your more brutal life of adventuring and slaying would be less involved as they draw you more into a path of thought provocation and sensationalism.

Art is meant to be interpreted; as Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, no two people will see the same thing in art.(do excuse my rambling, you're following my thought process here)

Hell, maybe you need to make your own dibellan statue? Maybe you need to make a decent painting as was mentioned earlier? Dancing was mentioned, there's mods that let you play instruments... Initiation should be about you expressing a deeper understanding about Dibella's teachings than the common assumptions.

One of my favorite things back in Morrowind was joining the Imperial Cult or the Tribunal Temple and playing through the role of a devout member of the faith.

I still think the most fun I've had in a quest was following the Pilgrim's Path and all the misadventures that befell my wandering healer as she traversed Vvardenfell in search of a stronger connection with ALMSIVI. The fact that so much of the quest revolved around delving DEEP into the lore of the game world was really what made it for me... but the fact that the Tribunal were actually characters (with the exception of Sotha Sil) whom you could actually meet and interact with really made it all the more exciting.

By the time I got to Mournhold, I was already Matriarch. I actually modded my game so as to make the quest completable without killing Almalexia. Instead, I reclaimed her as the wife of Nerevar and recruited her with me in my battle against Dagoth Ur. Of course, I also had a mod that allowed me to use the tools to become a demi-god like the Tribunal had... and then I replaced Sotha Sil and built myself a Clockwork Temple.

The rambling point I'm getting to is... I love the idea of getting to better know the lore of such a glossed-over group as the Chapel of Dibella. Because she covers everything from love and eroticism to fine art and aesthetic beauty, it's always been something that just sort of gets a nod before fading into obscurity. I'd love to see the various different groups who worship Dibella have some deeper, lore-intensive tasks to carry out. Tasks which might not always seem interesting.

One of the most boring things to happen to The Elder Scrolls in recent history was the sudden hatred that 'gamers' have developed towards the mundane. Doing things which don't seem all that over-archingly important. Collecting alms. Collecting charitable donations for the temple. Helping to arrange festivities.

All of these would have made an EXCELLENT part of the actual game. Imagine if the world of The Elder Scrolls still had HOLIDAYS. There is a DICTIONARY's worth of lore as to what parts of the world celebrate what holidays and when. There was a time when you could actually perform a RITUAL and summon a Daedra. And as the technology improved, and the ability to make these things BETTER and play a more IMPORTANT ROLE arose... what happened? Bethesda decided people wanted less complexity, and more dungeon diving.

No thanks on the dungeons. They should exist, but an awful lot of Skyrim takes place in dungeons. I only wish I could do mundane things in this game, and feel like I'm living a life, instead of killing people day in, and day out. It's why I was a huge Shenmue fan! Anyone remember Shenmue? No? Shenmue 2 perhaps (2 different systems), no...WELL FUCK YOU!! Why!? Why must you end a really great game at the pinnacle of it's story!? It's like when they canceled Alphas! (F**KIN' BULLS**T!!) :@Thank you, and have a nice day( :) )

This is the fundamental flaw with Role Playing Games in the modern age.

They're all GO HERE, KILL THIS THING. GO THERE, KILL THAT THING! OH LOOK! A FETCH QUEST! KILL EVERYTHING BETWEEN IT AND YOU AND THE QUEST GIVER! Yeah. That's not playing a role. That's playing a death dealing murder machine with a camera stapled onto it somewhere.

Roles are about the little things. Running a shop. Making friends. Interacting with the world in a meaningful way that both builds and expands upon the character you play. If your sole role is killing everything between generic quest location A and generic quest location B... then you're appealing to only the NARROWEST margin of people who actually enjoy Role Playing.

The single biggest improvements Oblivion made over Morrowind were the empowered scripting system that allowed player mods to so deeply expand the game world, and the switch over to the new combat system.

But they removed the chance of failure. They stripped out the complexity of the stats. They completely tied the game difficulty to a leveling system that left the character feeling perpetually overpowered when facing down the average mooks and just SLIGHTLY underpowered when facing down 'bosses'.

Then in Skyrim, they stripped out the attributes system completely. They culled the magical schools and irreversibly hobbled the enchantment system. They fixed the problems with leveling, to some degree, but they took away EVERY remaining part of the game that didn't translate directly into playing a merciless slayer of men and beasts.

And to make matters worse... the world just feels empty. The villages all feel devoid of purpose. The cities all feel like they're missing any kind of meaningful structure. The 'guilds' are all excruciatingly short questlines with largely excellent stories which all eventually translate into the player killing things.

It's a tragedy, is what it is.

Since you're already talking about Dibellan quests, I'd like to draw your attention to the possibility of some side-quests that are of a Darker Nature.

All of the Forsaken strongholds have Dibellan Shrines splattered with blood and are led by what appear to be male Dibellan Priests - the Briarhearts.

I can see someone being approached by the regular Dibellan Order after completing the Cidna Mine quest - to go undercover into a Forsaken Stronghold and get initiated into a wayward Dibellan cult to find out about them. Particularly since the Cidna mine Quest does allow you to join a subset of the Forsaken faction that belongs to one particular stronghold.

Your mission might be to find out:

i) Why have the male priests lost their hearts?

ii) What do they gain?

iii) How does a Briarheart come about?

iv) What are the nature of the sacrifices being made at these shrines? Willing? Unwilling? Erotic?

It could be quite a tense, erotic and interesting adventure... ;)

I think that has potential. For me, one of the most memorable parts of Baldur's Gate II was a riddle-solving section. If I remember it right you were trapped in an abandoned lunatic asylum, run by the deranged ghosts of former staff members. You had to prove your sanity by solving riddles, while the ghosts hung around and made condescending comments.

The riddles were a bit too easy, but the whole scene had an intriguing sense of dark comedy to it.

I love this idea a lot!!! This is the kind of experience I would love for this mod to have, something that involves the roleplaying aspect of the game. So far all the ideas proposed sound very neat in my opinion, but this one stands out as one of my favorites.

Here's a few more ideas for you, since I've been thinking about this a while. Obviously these are just ideas, and not specific quests I would suggest you do. (otherwise I've spoiled the surprise) But, as a writer, I like to have fully-fleshed ideas:

The player is sent to find / become the model for a struggling sculptor and reclusive member of one of the cults surrounding Dibella. If the player has a high enough speechcraft skill, they can charm the artist into using them as the model. If the player doesn't meet the artist's criteria, they're tasked with finding someone to fill the role. Have a number of potential persons who can be persuaded to come visit the artist's home and become the model. Depending on their stats... the outcome could be different.

Since 'Speechcraft' was essentially used to entirely replace the 'Personality' attribute... it would make sense that the higher their speechcraft skill, the more personable and charming they are. If they're skilled in other areas, perhaps some reference to the sculpture being 'powerful' or 'mystical' or 'enchanting' or some other such thing.

---

A continuous, ongoing quest to collect alms and charity for the chapel. Depending on how faithful the player is, they might choose to keep some of the donations for themselves or turn them all over to the cult. Perhaps an 'Almoner's Box' container could be used for delivery of those contributions collected. Perhaps after a certain 'value' is reached, the player could get some kind of a boon or blessing? Maybe even a perk or perk point if certain 'cumulative' values are reached. I don't know if that's possible, but it might be worth looking into whether or not the game has any way of 'calling' via script the monetary value of items.

---

The player is tasked with locating a painter who ventured out into the wilderness in search of the perfect vista. Somewhere along the way, he was taken hostage and the player must decide how to rescue him. While combat is always an option, the brigands who have taken him are well armed and willing to exchange him for a price. If you return to the chapel, you will be given the option of asking for the priestesses to use some of the money you have collected from the people in order to pay off the ransom. Otherwise you can fight the brigands, pay out of pocket, or perhaps offer them something else.

---

The aging mistress of a wealthy nobleman from Cyrodiil has lost the pendant her now-late lover bestowed to her. She believes it was stolen. The culprit turns out to be a member of the Thieves Guild, and the son of the nobleman. The pendant belonged to his grandmother, and he tracked it down believing that the woman who had it had, in fact, stolen it during her time as a servant in their household. The player has the option of taking it back, letting him keep it, or introducing the young man to the woman his father loved and the woman who practically raised him from birth. Perhaps a small side note could be made of the fact that his mother was a vain, materialistic woman who only married the father for his wealth and status. She had little interest in her husband or her son, and eventually left them both when she realized that her husband was sleeping with one of her handmaidens.

  • Sun's Dawn 16th

Today is the 16th of Sun's Dawn, a holiday celebrated all over Tamriel as Heart's Day. It seems that in every house, the Legend of the Lovers is being sung for the younger generation. In honor of these Lovers, Polydor and Eloisa, the inns of the city offer a free room for visitors. If such kindness had been given the Lovers, it is said, it would always be springtime in the world. In Daggerfall, this is the Summoning Day for Sanguine.

The player is tasked with helping prepare for the Heart's Day celebration. The Chapel of Dibella hosts a fine festival on the 16th of Sun's Dawn, during which time... as stated above... the inns all throughout Skyrim offer a free room, and the Chapel holds a grand feast and evening of dancing and drinking dedicated to the joys and beauty of love.

I'll keep on thinking up more ideas as they come to me... but this lot is a pretty good collection, I think. And this was all just off the top of my head, sitting here. With a little imagination... just think of what you could turn this idea into!

These are great! Sadly I'm not a modder myself, I wish I could develop this, but I have no experience with CK. I was thinking that perhaps depending on your speechcraft, the artist would react towards his desired painting. With a decent skill, he might want to paint you but in a rather simple way, however if your skill is high enough, he might want to do a masterpiece based on your body. This could alter the pose, clothing locale, etc.

I would also love to include the Brush of True Paint one way or the other and perhaps pc, could create a dreamworld with it?

Perhaps part of the Sun's Dawn mission would involve Sanguine trying to add some debauchery to the festivities?
