Please Help, Skyrim Won't Launch - Sorry, I'm New

I downloaded Skyrim on Steam 3 or 4 days ago. I've never played any version of Skyrim before, though I did play Oblivion years ago on X-Box. I'm new to modding as well, especially the way Skyrim seems to do it. (I've played Sims 4 the last year or so and have modded it, but it's completely different it seems.) I saw a lot of posts that said you want a clean save when you add new mods, so I didn't want to play any until I'd gotten the mods that sounded interesting installed. Before installing any, I opened the game from Steam for a minute because I read you wanted to have an ini file initiated before modding? (I'm sure I've misunderstood a lot of things in this journey.)

I am using Vortex for a mod manager and have quadruple checked that I downloaded from SE pages (though Vortex is still flagging some as incompatible because it was made for another version) and some of the comments on those have said to just ignore it that they will work fine. My problem is that when I try to start the game through Steam, or through the SKSE launcher it will sometimes show the initial screen where you click Play, but then it just quits. Most of the time, it's not giving that screen at all, it just does nothing.

I've updated all my drivers, reinstalled the game, verified the files, checked for corrupted files, run as administrator, combed through the mods list the best I can (though I'm sure something in there is the culprit). I've read through most of the Support pages for the mods, watched a lot of YouTube videos, but I'm such a noob that I feel like I'm missing something very obvious, so I figured I would post here to see if anyone could point me in the right direction.

I'm not sure what information is needed in order to get help either, so please ask anything. I'm sorry if this isn't where I should be posting this question, and thank you for any help. :)

From what I know you either have not every requirement for your mods installed or some mods just won't work. I had that problem as well, but after reinstalled the mods, checking that I had the necessary requirements and deployed the mods on vortex, it worked.

I don't use Vortex. It's... confusing, for me.

Try Mod Organizer 2? It's easier to organize your order and to check for conflicts.

Lots of things can cause this. What mods are installed? What's the installed & load order? Are there new animations in them? Did you register them properly using FNIS? etc etc.

I don't know about Vortex, but in MO or MO2 there are text files that logged your install & load orders. They can really help with finding the problems.

And yeah, use the SE version of whatever mod you like. Don't use the Oldrim mods for the SE version, vice versa. Some of them will work just fine (with slight glitches), but lots of them will be buggy or don't work at all. And not worth the headache.

That is commonly caused by one of two issues. Either you have a missing master (as has already been mentioned) or you are trying to run too many animations. Fouling up your SE mods for LE mods CAN do it but it usually takes some work to do it badly enough to keep the game from loading.

I am no expert on Vortex (I use NMM myself) but all the mod managers normally flag you if you are missing a master. Typically, the name of the affected mod is highlighted in red in your load order. If you see something like that (or otherwise not looking like the rest of the mods) you should probably investigate the mod to see what you are missing. You can also run LOOT to get a second opinion but, from what I understand, just loading LOOT into Vortex in the manner needed to make it run properly can be a task in itself.

The other thing to do, once you've satisfied yourself that you are not missing a master is to rerun FNIS and see what Fore tells you about your animations. Since you're new to this you might want to simply copy the entire output and post it here.

Is this what you meant? I probably do have too many things. The only other game I've modded is the Sims, and it doesn't seem like there's a limit to anything as long as they all play nice together. I just tossed in anything that looked interesting to give a try >.<

Oh, I see there are two warnings. Any idea how I have a female skeleton not Skyrim compatible? And I've redownloaded the Critters mod like 5 times and I'm sure it came from the SE page, but it keeps telling me it's not. So FNIS doesn't concern itself with the other mods I have? I have some texture mods and body mods that people said make your game prettier. UNPB, Majestic Mountains, Noble Skyrim, SMIM, Water Two, etc, but they were all from a SE page.

Thank you for any help you can give. I don't know how to copy/paste a load order like I've seen a lot of people post. Do you need it? I could do it manually and then cringe at my day-after-Christmas-shopping that I did :P

Oh, and nothing is saying it's missing a master. The only errors it gives on some were that they were made for another version (though even in the file some say SE).

Which one did you install? XPMSE is for oldrim, as for SE is XPMSSE.

I think it's okay but just to make sure, there's no harm using Animation Limit Crash Fix SSE too.

Hmmmm... Bah, I was so careful lol I think the SE at the end of the first one threw me off, it was one of the first things I downloaded. I have the right one now. Thank you so much! It's now asking which to load first the XPMSSE or all the different movement and animation mods. The page said nothing should overwrite XPMSSE, so that means it loads last and I just make sure everything else is picked "before"? It probably seems like an obvious thing, but I'm worried I've got everything backwards.

Yes, that is the page I downloaded it from, and I chose the 12.06A version. At first I downloaded the merged file, but when I kept having problems, I thought maybe that was why. So I downloaded the highest looking number for both of the parts. 12.06A didn't have SE in it anymore, but I figured since it was on the SE page it was the SE one.

Nexus said I downloaded it, but it's not there now. I probably deleted it in one of my blind attempts to fix my problems. I'll get it again.  Thank you again! I'm going to go try it all and see if anything's changed.

Animation Limit Crash Fix doesn't have .esp plugin file.

To make sure you already installed it try looking for SrtCrashFix64.dll file inside (probably, i don't know Vortex) \<Skyrim Mod Folder>\SKSE\Plugins folder.

If it's there, then you're good.

For MNC, try using version 12.02SE. IIRC I also experienced some random CTD using 12.04 or higher so I rolled back.

I'm playing Legendary Edition and still using v12.02 and it's quite stable.

Normally, nothing should replace XPMSSE but it's not absolute. It depends on the mods and their priority.

MNC has it's own animal skeletons and meshes. Let it replace XPMSSE or you'll see some glitches.

Thank you so much! You've been really helpful, and I appreciate your time! I'm going to eat breakfast and give it another shot. I can't believe I haven't even been able to create a character yet lol It's one of my favorite parts of any game haha

Yay! Finally got all the bugs worked out (at least for it to launch)! Thank you so much for your help, ShortIron! :)

Good to hear.

I'm sorry to bother you again, but since you've been so helpful and I've Googled all the ways I can think of to ask this question and not come up with an answer, I wonder if you can tell me. What is the equivalent to ESC key in game? There's a pop up window asking about FNIS settings and there's no X or cancel or anything and ESC doesn't close it. I don't want to make any changes as I have no clue what I would actually be changing, but I can't get it to close. I looked up PC controls, but none of the lists showed an ESC or Close window type of thing. :/

TAB can also close window or cancel actions/dialogues.

If you're not already, use Better Message Box & Better Dialogue Controls.
