"Not Responding"

Ok guys, I've been modding Fallout NV for a while on Win 7, but recently upgraded to Win 10.  Built a new rig, got the new Windows, the whole shebang.  Fallout NV looks great and runs well, EXCEPT: after 5 minutes of playing, the game tends to freeze.  I have to ctl+alt+del and then force close from task manager and the TM always says its not responding.  I've looked up the fixes, and nothing seems to help.  I do have a lot of LL mods installed (I love Breeder).  Does anyone have any idea what I could do to solve this?  I do have the 4gb patch and all too.

Do you have NVAC installed?

Do you have more as 139 esp's/esm's installed?

Are you running with NVSR? (If so, remove New Vegas Stutter Remover, or configure it, because out of the box it has a conflict with Windows 10)

Ok, I removed NVSR and I do have NVAC installed.  I have 77 esps, so I'm far under the max.  The game stops responding at weird times: sometimes during combat, sometimes while I'm just walking, sometimes when a LL mod activates.  Sometimes I fast travel and only the bare textures for the ground load in...and then boom, it stops responding.  I can't figure this out.

It almost sounds like you are missing NVSE addons.

Also you might need JIP LN NVSE Plugin  (some mods need it)

Yup.  Have both of those.

It seems from your description that it loads in too many textures. (overload). But I don't know what would cause it.

Do you have a load order (and if possible an install order)?

Here you go!

hmmm. Apart from 1 or 2 minor things, I don't really see what is really hurting your performance.

You have some (texture/game) overhauls. Do you have the compatibility patches too?

Could you try disabling nevadaSkies and see if that makes it better?

And if still an issue, try disabling FNV Realistic Wasteland Lighting

Minor things:

Spoiler

MPO ScriptAddon Tryout can be used for a fix to one of the tryout outfits that I already converted

I don't think this one is still needed: SexoutBreederAddon.esp

Is't there an 'All DLC' option for Project nevada?

No, Project Nevada doesn't have an all DLC patch, though I wish it did.  So I disabled Sexoutbreederaddon.esp and Nevada skies and it worked for much longer than before.  Still ended up freezing up.  Gonna try disabling the lighting mod next.  I'll update when I've checked it out thoroughly.

Ok, so while it is a bit better, it still is crashing with the 'not responding' thing.  Ugh.

There's two more things I can think of.  FNV Realistic Wasteland Lighting clashes badly with Nevada Skies as both are overhauling the weather system. Best to only install one, and having the other one deleted. Also, Realistic Wasteland Lighting needs to be at the very bottom of the load order. The other thing is hardware related. Seems moot to ask but Win 10 is using more ram than win7. So the crashes might occur because of not enough ram being available in the first place (had that happen to me before, and recently in Xcom2 as well).

Maybe try this

https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/66537

in combination with something someone here wrote months ago, since I suspect that this might be a W10 problem:

Quote

Key #1: Using either NVSR or New Vegas Tick Fix.  If NVSR, the one thing that absolutely matters is this: bHookCriticalSections = 0.  At 0, no crashes.  At 1, guaranteed crash --
the more often you change cells, the sooner it'll happen.  Now, having this at 0 will cause the game to stutter pretty badly whenever anything at all loads.  So it's particularly
noticeable when traveling, as new grids in the distance constantly load in.  Oh well!  It doesn't stutter at all when nothing's loading.  That all said, I did at least sort out three variations.

1: bReplaceHeap = 0.  Bad stutters.  This is identical to the behavior exhibited by New Vegas Tick Fix so I assume said mod achieves basically the same thing as these settings.

2: bReplaceHeap = 1.  Stutters are lessened.  However!  Menus develop a lag problem that seems to be dictated by the complexity of the given menu.  Long lists, like the loading screen
with several hundred saves, or "Notes" in the Pip-Boy with hundreds of entries, take about a full second of waiting to resolve, even if you simply move to a different menu and back; it
pauses every time.  Pretty awful.

3: bReplaceHeap = 1, and iHeapSize = 512 (rather than 450).  Stutters are lessened, and the menu problem does not manifest.  This is the best result I've gotten under Windows 10.

Key #2: Something else may still cause crashes.  It's one or several of your mods.  (Or you may luck out and not have this particular issue; plenty of folks have.)  Much of the confusion
arises from the fact that bad NVSR settings or "bad" mods (or both, obviously) can cause pretty much the same crashing phenomenon, thoroughly obfuscating the issue and preventing a lot of
folks from arriving at any kind of solution.  Now, what is a "bad mod"?  I don't know.  What dictates that a given mod will cause NV in Win10 to crash like this but not in Win7?  I don't know!
But the good news is that once you get NVSR's settings sorted out per above, theoretically, if you then begin systematically removing mods from your load order until the crashes no longer occur,
then you can whittle the problem down.  I actually don't know for certain what my problem was, though signs point to possibly one of my LOD mods.  What I do know is that I played New Vegas for about
400 hours on Windows 10... in 10-minute increments... and now I get to play the rest of this playthrough in relative peace.

The stuttering is annoying AF, don't get me wrong.  I'd love for there to be a more comprehensive solution that takes into account Windows 10's failures (supposedly introduced by the so-called
"Creator's Update").  But NVSR was last updated in 2014, and nobody with that kind of expertise is stepping forward.

What file do I alter for NVSR?  Where is it?

Fallout New Vegas\Data\NVSE\Plugins\sr_New_Vegas_Stutter_Remover.ini

but NVSR is not working correctly with Win10, and that was the reason why Tick fix was created in the first place afaik.

Link to comment

Ok.  I'll tweak it.  I disabled both and have played for an hour or more in an interior cell with no crash.  I'll try the Tick Fix and see if the exterior world is more stable.

Link to comment

Ok, so I can confirm this much: even with NVTF, it crashes.  It freezes and goes non-responsive in the world space only.  Interior cells have no issue with this.  I can play for hours in a cave or building, but outside...10 mins tops.

Do you use a ENB?

if yes, try to change some of your settings in the enblocal.ini to this

Well, that's glad to hear. But don't epxect ctd's to magically disappear with this now. ;)

No worries of false hopes, but if I can go an hour between them instead of 2 - 10 minutes then I'm happy with the improvement!
