BAB PEEG Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 I've never had any problems with Mod organizer but I was wondering if Vortex was any better since I keep seeing it everywhere.
Glaurung26 Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Simple question but a complex answer. I'm moving to it for future releases (assuming FO76 wasn't the nail in the coffin). I'm moving SSE over to there since I can't get it to cooperate with ModOrg. ModOrg still works fine for Oldrim and FO4. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unless you are feeling adventurous and want to see what the platform has to offer. It's a VERY different interface stye and takes some exploration time. But it's okay once you get used to it. Need to? No. Curious about it? Then sure. My advice is to keep an eye on it. It might fizzle out or become essential for future releases. But at this moment it's just working proof of concept imo.
steelpanther24 Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 I moved over and so far no issues BUT.......I had long ago worked through LOOT and FO4Edit so I moved a "stabilized" mod load out. Since I haven't used Vortex to add a complex mod yet, I haven't seen it stressed. So, I have not seen any advantage to using Vortex and I suspect that most people who have stabilized mod load outs will be ok using MO. I doubt I will get FO76, but maybe Red Dead Redemption 2 will allow modding, so we will see. BTW, certain old games do not work well with Vortex, like Dragon Age, Mount and Blade, and Fallout 2. I still use mod manager programs built just for those games, since even MO could not do the same thing.

AWP3RATOR Posted December 15, 2018 Posted December 15, 2018 If you are using MO2 and it works for you, there is no benefit to moving to Vortex. Vortex was created to replace NMM - not MO2. While the primary MO2 developer has moved to Nexus and crated Vortex - note that is not a replacement, and it is not "better" than MO2 in any way. Mod organizers (any of them) attempt to simplify the process of installing and managing mods for your game - that's what they do. Vortex is a good mod manager and automates much of the management process of installing mods, load order, etc. It relies on LOOT and "known" compatibilities and attempts to sort your mods into a "best fit" order. When, as a user, you want to alter this order, you'll need to update priority rules for the LOOT sorter. There is no such thing as manually sorting Vortex load order in the way that NMM or MO2 do it. MO2 on other hand, assumes that user knows what they are doing, and is at least passively experienced at modding their game. MO2 gives the "ultimate" freedom in that there are only cursory checks for load order and mod compatibility - and leaves he job of actually knowing if mods are compatible, and which order they should be loaded in - to the user. TLDR: If you have MO2 and like it- there is no benefit to going to Vortex (or vice versa)
steelpanther24 Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 This thread may be dead, but........whoa boy......I need to re do my initial answer. Vortex is NOT better. If you have a stable game, then don't switch it up. If you have time to kill (like a few hours to watch the tutorials, read the wikis and the discussion threads for Vortex) then switch. However, MO and NMM are old and as Awp3rator said, you had to know a thing or two ab out how to get it to "work". I found out that, according to the Vortex defenders stating ' I have "borked up NMM and its not Vortex's fault". That means I will have to reload my nearly 200 mods for FO4, 170 some mods for Skyrim and the half dozen mods for the other games. Bottom line, if you plan on using Nexus (which is increasingly becoming more hostile with name calling and insults to ones intelligence as becoming the most common response to requests for help. I am going to keep my NMM (with LOOT and F4edit) as long as I can.....then again....i stayed on DOS until games started being made for Windows. One way or another, we all get dragged into the modern era, either comatose or kicking and screaming but dragged nonetheless.

If you are going to switch I would move to MO2 (I did). Originally I went from NMM to Vortex since there was no longer support for NMM and it worked okay once you figured out the process and how to manipulate mods. Then there was an update and my mods were trashed. I reinstalled everything from scratch, got it going and Windows updated and all my mods were trashed (this is the short version, I haven't played Fallout 4 for several weeks as I switch over to MO2); that's when I decided to try MO2 and I am sold. It works fine, it doesn't clutter up the Data file in Fallout 4 and it is easier to turn mods on and off. If you already use MO you are ahead of me in the learning curve. I recommend you either stay with MO or go over to MO2.
JATL Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 Just started a new game (FO4) and I'm trying Vortex. I've previously used FOMM, NMM and just this year, MO. Vortex seems very simple and easy to use, highly automated. All was well until I needed to manually move a mod to near the end of my load. Wow, it went from very simple to very weird. It's like they are trying to use the Skyrim perk tree to explain file associations. I'm sure it seems like a great idea and very clear to the programmer, but to me, it's like having to jump through hoops in order to do a relatively simple drag and drop. I'll be moving to MO2.
