References to rape, chained up prisoners, and other fun stuff like decapitation and drinking conteshts. Damn, I want this game NAOW. Except, I also want it to have been out for two years so that all the good mods have started to release. =-=-=-= "What illogic is this? Keep your filthy, penis-tipped feet out of our labs and secrets!"
alako Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 14 years ago, adult themes in games like Fallout 2 were way more intense...... I don't understand why chopping people into pieces is ok for modern gaming, but one reference to sex or rape and ppl start to make a big fuzz about it.
Slammer64 Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 Alako, it has to do with the cultural values of the U.S. vs. Europe, in the U.S. violence is ok, but sex a no-no, in Europe sex is permitted, even encouraged, but violence is rarely allowed. Look at some of Germany's restrictions on blood and gore vs. U.S. restrictions on sex as an example.
Daguy Posted September 19, 2011 Author Posted September 19, 2011 A quirk of western society. Blood, gore, and guts? Thats fine. A hint of boobies or a mention of a sexual act? ZoMG we are offended!!one1 In many ways the west if still pretty repressed as far overt displays or talk of a sexual nature. Of course, kinky crap is fine as long as it's behind closed doors. Pretty Victorian really. In the East its a little bit the other way around. Breasts and sexual themes are pretty common in anime aimed at young teens and up, whereas the real gory stuff doesn't usually start til you get tot he 18+ stuff like Gantz and Berserk. Edit: Hehe, beaten to it by Slammer. =-=-=-= "What illogic is this? Keep your filthy, penis-tipped feet out of our labs and secrets!"

[/quote'] Because 14 years ago there weren't as many restrictions in the ESRB. Nudity and sex aren't often show in video games meant for western markets, when they are show graphically, in the case of sex, the ESRB puts an AO rating on the game. AO games don't sell, and when it comes to putting millions of dollars into a product, you just have to play by the rules to make a profit. It's a culture thing, something that you only have to look at recent American history to understand. As for why people make a fuss over this...they're the minority. Some people just like having a devil to yell at, and when a hate-monger finds something big and profitable to sue and yell at, they turn the daggers at it. Video games have suffered controversy, something in the American polit-o-rrect atmosphere that gets you serious flank, crappy sells, and social stigma. Most people don't care, but when someone charismatic enough gets behind the hate-train, they can drive it anywhere they will. As for those whom defend the rights of games to be close to gritty reality, I have a saying, and it doesn't matter who's side you're on. The scholar has the pen. The idiot has the trumpet.
LordJerle Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 Considering the ESRB has only been around since 1994, it would stand to reason that they didn't have the power then that they have now.
Siouliusn Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 Better have it M from the start, that will prevent some hysteric screams from anindignant mother about how violent the game her 13yo boy's playin' (and trying to fool us about the fact that she bought the game for him~~~)
LordJerle Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 I think parents should be informed, yes, but it seems to me that more and more, the ESRB is trying to dictate moral standards, as opposed to providing an informed choice for parents, which is what they were intended to do. This may stem from the fact that most retailers won't even sell games without an ESRB rating, and consoles will not allow licensing for games without one either. There should be a secondary rating board of random volunteers to review decisions to remove bias.
Vyrce Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 There should be a secondary rating board of random volunteers to review decisions to remove bias. no such thing as a human w/o some sort of bias. but that's another thing altogether. any who its not like anyone didn't see Skyrims M rating coming from a mile away anyway. as graphical quality goes up it takes less and less violence to throw it up there on that alone. let alone anything else. Shoot Oblivion had a M rating....

Vyrce Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 If any sort of game came with base naked skin sets it'd automatically be AO rated no one would sell it and the company would go bankrupt. If just from the bad press. Though I'm pretty sure when new heavily moddable or user created content games come out nude patches/bodies are some of the first mods made. Irony for your shirty?
Guest Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Did anyone else laugh out loud at the grape part?

You know I've heard this many a time and I always thought people don't look at the reasoning objectivly. The reason parents over here are more concerned about sex being shown in the consequence free world of video games and movies than they are about violence is that they know that human instict works against common sense with regards to sex- unlike violence where we instivily desire not to kill each other. Hence it boils down to this. 'when I was a teenager I didn't go around stabbing people no matter how often people did it on T.V. But I did go around banging people no matter how many people said it might be a bad idea.'
afa Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Doesn't Witcher 2 has nude scenes and very strong sexual overtone? It got a M rating.

But I did go around banging people no matter how many people said it might be a bad idea.' If no matter how many people point out its a bad idea, and people do it anyway, then its presence in an entertainment medium - or at the very least realistic nudity - seems unimportant. I see where you are coming from, but I still see it as silly.
Galacticat42 Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 It's not exactly true that anything with nudity gets an AO. God of War for example has breasts everywhere and the occasional penis hidden under a loin cloth not to mention buttocks galore. It's rated M for all three of its releases.
Triratna Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 So anyone playing it yet? the torrent leaks is out there.. so..Anyway, some freak even put all Skyrim music in TES.Nexus. From the main title to death & level up theme. (I personally reported that guy).
Mashi Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Doesn't Witcher 2 has nude scenes and very strong sexual overtone? It got a M rating. Hell it's got full on sex in it. Speaking of which if you haven't played it, you should. Excellent game, especially with the 2.0 release.

[/quote'] well of course it is silly! we are talking about human beings here, human beings are rarely rational about anything, even less so about things they have hang ups about! as a species we are not very objective but we are very emotional about our wants and desires. it can be a good thing some of the time to be that way, it makes us fight to live, but it makes a poor standard to build a society on.
gregathit Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Which is why utopia is a "state of mind" and NOT a country!
LordJerle Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I was watching Demolition Man a few months back and I was wondering to myself if the world portrayed in the movie is really a utopic society. Sure they've pretty much eradicated crime, but at what cost? No freedom of speech, all the good food and drink is illegal, and there's little to no freedom of expression (unless you got the uncut version and saw that one scene where the REALLY hot chick is buckass naked for like 3 seconds in the movie)
gregathit Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 And what the hell was up with the "All restaurants are Taco Bell" nonsense?!?!?!?!?! .....you didn't by chance figure out the three sea shells did you????
LordJerle Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 You don't know how to use the seashells?!!! *points* *laughs*
