It's a last gen CPU so I wouldn't recommend buying it new, always try to get the newest generation when you buy new or buy the 7700k second hand.

what's your reasoning?

Price to performance, the new chips have around the same price but perform better.

Honesty I wouldn't even recommend going with intel but choosing AMD instead, their CPU are just a much better value.

AMD CPUs have been and always will be trash for gaming, good for workstations due to higher core count. but overall crap for gaming. The i5 8600K punches the R5 1600X in the face multiple times in most games at the same clock speeds.

Intel's been having supply issues with their newest model of processors, so maybe it's also driving up the prices of last gen's stuff.

Yeah, lowest I saw the 4790K at was 125, but it's gone back up to 175 average.

where did you see that? was it used? ive only seen it on amazon for around $400 brand new.

get a 4790K. I got mine to 4.8Ghz and it blows the 7700K out of the water

Proof:

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-3610702/tom-hardware-passmark-cpu-benchmark-thread.html

Not a good idea since the platform the 4790k uses is already obsolete and it uses the older DDR3 which wont be sold for much longer, also the 7700k is 3 generations newer then the 4790k which means it is not better then the 7700k, that wouldn't make any sense.

Thats simply not true, while a 8700k with a 2080 might out perform the 2700x with a 2080 by a small amount in games which prefer single core performance, games that use more then 1/2 cores run the same or better on AMD cpu. Not to mention that all AMD cpu's have more PCIe lanes and higher native Memory speed support. And the price to performance is way better which the only thing that should matter to the average consumer.

4790K? lol uhhhh no. that's LGA 1150. which means the boards are all leftovers and not made anymore so i'd have to choose from a limited selection if new or get used on ebay (no thanks).

i'm going for the ryzen 2700 (non-x) as I want the 65wTDP and don't care about the handful of gained frames from a 7700K or 8700K. this is going into a mini-itx build so lower power = lower heat.

DDR3 is still relevant and can outperform DDR4. 7700K is shit tier Intel crap. I made a post on this. I will bet you $40 that my  DDR3 2133 CL10 stomps all over your trash DDR4 2400  CL14.

That is false.

My CPU has 40 PCIe lanes. The 2700X? 30. My CPU is even older (Ivy Bridge-ES)

I'll say the same thing. Plenty of 1150 boards are sold new or like new on eBay.

Ryzen 2700 is  garbage. Mini ITX? Good luck with heat from the Ryzen...more like Ovyn.

I can't believe I am weighing in on this Topic, but then I am going to Defend AMD on this one and Give a Nod to my Old War Beast, cause I had a 4790k and 32 Gb of 1600Mhz DDR 3 Ram, and a GTX 770 it was a Very Good Rig to be Honest and it has Aged Very Well. However it was the time to Jump to a More Relevant Platform for Compatibility Reasons... Prior to Owning that Old Beast I had an AMD A10 6800x that was simply a Stop Gap to last me a few Years and it was Pretty Reliable for a 4 core 4 Thread Apu It could even game to a Point. It's Single Core Speed was a 93 and a Multi of 400... But it was simply a Stop Gap Gave it to my Folks and it Still Runs everything they needed before I gave them the 4790k...

But back to the 4790k if you do an Extreme Benchmark under the Worst Case Scenario, Turbo OFF, Shit Running in the Background ETC it's Single Core Speed in for example Cinebench will be around 135-140 and that is the worst Case Scenario, Best Case Scenario and Tuned with a 4.4 Ghz it was 175... Which is in Fact a very good score... However the Multi-Core Score is and always will be Sub 1000 I Kissed 900 Briefly and you can bet she was damm Hot at 99c and it is limited as it has only 4 Cores and 8 Threads...

It will In Fact Struggle with some Games Worlds Adrift was Painful... Seriously Painful... 22 FPS

However I now own a Ryzen 2600x Cooled by the Prism Cooler by AMD a DAMM GOOD STOCK Cooler that gets a 30c Idle and can keep it under 70c at all times when under Extreme Loads as in Blender... And Rendering a Project in Daz Studio or a Photo Shop Vector Project... The Board is a Micro Atx B450 Aorus M from Gigabyte that is blessed with 4 Dimm Slots as I need the Ram for my Projects, I am currently Rocking 16 Gb of LPX Vengeance XMP 3000 Mhz, and while an Evga 1050 Ti Sc is a Budget Card it get's the Job Done and if it Conks I can Pull out the old 770...

Guess what the Ryzen 2600x can get for scores with 4.2 Ghz... 185 Best case Scenario, 165 worst case... The Problem with the 4790k is that it is Technically Slower as it has two Less Cores and four less threads... In a Work Load that Matters... In Gaming the Performance of the 2600x is nearly the same as the 8600K but the Second the need for more threads hits it's more Comparable to the 8700k but lags behind but not by much, in a Multi-Thread it will Exceed the 8700k... I can pull a 1500 Multi at 4.2 Ghz at 68c which is NOT AN OVEN! Guess what Ryzen's Turbo is so Good I don't need to overclock to get 1474 at 58c

FYI the 8700k's Single Core is 206 and the Multi is 1400... 1450 at 4.5 Ghz... 78c if you want to De-Lid the Expensive Sucker and ruin your Warrantee... Basically you have to have an AIO for Intel So That Myth about Ryzen Being an Oven is a Myth as my Prism is Beefy Air and pretty Damm Silent...

I can benchmark all games the difference is Marginal... The 4790k has Aged Well but it is not even close not at all I made the leap to the new Ryzen platform for only 550 Dollars and she Purrs like a Kitten 60fps and sometimes 100fps in Mostly Every Title at 1080p as expected of a 1050 Ti, I am Limited by the GPU, But I put most of the Money into the CPU and Computer Infrastructure... As I am only a Part Time Gamer... Seriously Ryzen can Game Quite Well... It can Out Do Intel as a Workstation at the same time... Seriously Gaming is not the Soul Purpose of a Computer People... I went Ryzen for the Price to Performance and Better Forward Compatibility... I will probably be able to slot in the next few chips from AMD. If not Boards are Cheap, Ram and GPU's are not...

Seriously to the Fellow with the 4790k your going to have to move to a Modern Platform in the near Future as you just won't have Support or the Ability to use New Developments... I waited Nearly Six Year for a new Rig, this new one will last me a Good Stint, then I will build a new one in the Case I have from 2008 Resurrecting the Ancient WOW Beast... Then again I could use the Old A10's Case like I did for Ryzen... Whatever I am done... Seeyaa

are there any new intel or amd cpu's being released soon for gaming or will the latest one's be here for awhile? like a 9700k or ryzen 2800x in the works?

The Ryzen is moving to Zen 2 so no to the 2800x Unless they are going to pull a Christmas Release... Zen 2 Which is Technically 3rd Gen which is set to Release in 2019 and be Compatible with the AM4 Socket so There is an Upgrade Path for those who Jumped onboard with Gen 1 or 2 though I would Recommend the 400 Series Boards the 300 Series of AM4 is slightly less Capable... However a 500 Series Board Might be in the Works... I will probably snag a 3600x or if I am Lucky a 3700x seeing as I will have that Option. Then again I could wait longer and build up some extra Dosh for an Upgrade in 2020... Currently I am Focusing on the AMD Graphics Release, as there is no way in hell that I am going to Spend 800 on a GPU, I can build a Damm Good Rig for that.

Not sure about Intel with it's Shortage Problem and Price Fixing and Lack of a Decent Upgrade Path nowadays... Secondly DDR 5 is set to Release as well and will be somewhere between the Latency Between DDR 3 and DDR 4 but still have the Speed of DDR 4... However I can't be sure about the DDR 5 as I have no Benchmarks... Hope that Tidbit Helps...

ah ok, I wanted to stick with intel and get an i7 since I still play skyrim a decent amount, and it benefits from the single core performance. I would like an AMD cpu though for other games. maybe the single core performance will jump up a bit for these new AMDs coming. Currently still have an i5 4690k and based on these   https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

I still have slightly better single core performance than the 2700x.

Uhh 4690k... 152 Single Core Score best case scenario... 2700x Average Scenario 177 Stock so no not Really, seeing as I had a 4790k and made the Leap I'd have a Reason to do so, the Haswell, Broadwell and Devils Canyon Chips have aged well but not in the Sense that is Feasible for the Future they are good for now but not much longer... I have Skyrim and I have 200+ Mods she runs Fine on my New Rig heck it ran fine on my old A10 as well. Also Skyrim uses more than one Core, heck I ran it on an Athlon 4400x2... It's not an Intense Game Title Heck Fallout 4 Ran on that A10... Seriously I don't get why people are so Focused on Single Core Speed...

Yes it Matters to a Point, but more and more games are using More Threads and with More Threads the Load is less and less per core meaning less Heat... Skyrim is Old and Locked at 60 FPS Stock and the only thing that you might perceive as Superior is down to how fast the CPU Munches Data and Manages that Data. It then comes down to Drive Speed... Overall you will not see any detrimental Performance, seeing as I can play the Roughest games Without Issue as 60 Fps, Since my Monitor is only Capable of 60hz 1080p, you won't notice 100 Fps... So yeah The whole Single Core thing is Getting Less Relevant, and with the Trends and Technical Limitations of Infinity Fabric and Low Latency Ring Bus and Development is going to be Snails Pace... The Current Solution is to Brute Force the Program with Shear Core Speed and have a Few Multiple Threads... Basically were at that point in time like in 2005 or 1998, shits going to be very interesting. Maybe someone is going to Stack CPU's like a Club Sandwich, Granted that didn't go well for a Renown GPU...

Or Simply Increase the Number of Cores and Threads like Ryzen... Basically Adding Extra Workers to get the Job Done...

My Point a Single Core Processers Speed has nearly hit that Maximal Point. Also known as a Mature Technology it will only see Marginal Improvements, basically it will stop when we can't make objects smaller than a Single Nano Meter at that point Structural Integrity will be Questionable... This is the Serious Problem Intel is Having...

I can totally go to my Cellar and pull out the old Compaq running a Pentium 3 and give you a Comparison it's Internals and Externals are Massive by Compare... So yeah It's that Point Again... I don't Regret the Leap not at all...

I use Cinebench cause it tests a Core under a Rendering Load which is my Job and Prime 95... I can Play Games as well. You can stick with Intel if you want but given the Trend and Lack of Generational Compatibility I am now going to go with old Reliable AMD.

You rerereposting  'bench' based on synthetics doesn't mean anything much less the ask around you did on graphics in the ensuing time, you've already played your card along time ago. The fact you're posting a synthetic at all is enough.

The really great part is you posting on single threading when fo4 doesn't rely on it and neither will anything else in the remaining dx11 and forward dx12. The only reason dx11 is even cogent is console concern.

The thread is about gaming to begin with, and this thread is also about parts you can actually get so your fuck you is about as relevant as the last time you had a hyperscreech hissy fit, so not only are your politics past relevance, they aren't topical either.

You wanna yet another hill to die on you should probably pick one that isn't governed by the laws of physics and physical immutable architecture limitations.

Both lines are refreshing, AMD is bringing a completely new line so buying for forward usage will entail an entire platform upgrade. intel is still using an existing platform.

The 9 line is on coffee lake with firmware tweaks, the top two 9s will actually be soldered instead of that ridiculous paste shit so thermals and tdp should be more competitive, and intel is still the ceiling in regards to gaming and horsepower per core, the only reason AMD is 'competitive' here at all is their batshit bandwidth. You're not going to see efficient use of cores until the nexct console gen with full current dx implementation. With ray tracing and shaders governing both inside and outside of graphics more cores working at full bore together will be a much bigger deal, but the mainline use of that will be two years away. nVidia has the money and marketshare to strongarm RT through development pipes, but like the last time they did with tessellation it will be literal years before it becomes the desired method from the bottom up and the engine and engineers costs from a software perspective are not even a kind of cheap even with inhouse engineers like Dice and CDPR. It took fifteen years for antialiasing to become varied and 'cheap' enough to be an automatically in the box feature, and the cheapest versions fxaa and txaa still looks like ass in a lot of situations and still cause eyestrain at low frames.

580

The 580 refresh is just clocks and tweaks, and there's isn't a rat's chance in hell of them touching a platform that isn't natively coded for amd specifically or vulkan harder then nVidia. The Vega platform wasn't meant for gaming and it shows. I congratulate their marketing team on successfully getting AotS on a bunch on benchmark suites, but ain't nobody playing that game for real, having to undervolt to actually get decent performance out of your cards isn't something that's going to sell as a bullet point on box. Where that's a win is actually not being able to get a 2070+ because that shit is sold out so you can get a 580+ or turbo or super or streamripper or whatever the fuck they call it for "cheaper" and it'll run better than your 780 or 7700 or whatever old ass card you're currently using. If you have a 1080 or newer, there isn't even a reason to look at the 580 unless you're competent enough to MANUALLY fuck with the card yourself.

faster

Beth games specifically choke on draw calls and bandwidth. By far the highest speed increase for beth games is faster storage and faster memory. Frame to frame, a card with better shader bandwidth is king, and there the only choice is nVidia right now, and AMD's actual response to 20XX won't be out until next year.

Lets all just wait for the new i9 benchmarks to roll in, if the performance justifies the price them y'all might want to buy that.

my main rig is an i9 7900x. the benchmarks are a little better than ryzen 7 vs 7700K. it has more cores but for most games which are designed around single proc the 7700K still beats it in FPS. so basically my i9 has 10 cores but will get beat by the 7700K by a handful of frames in most of today's games. if games start getting designed around more cores i'll be gtg.

oh ur talking about the i9 9900Ks ooops

Color me Curious but who are you referring to in these Comments? I don't know if your calling my Benches Trash? Or trying to insult me? I am laughing at the Hill Comment and Hyperscreech Comment... Seeing as I am totally neutral as I use Both Intel and AMD but Really Your all over the Place with your Comments? I have a 1050 Ti and a 770, so yeah who are you targeting cause, I am lost...

I could have gone the Intel Route but Compatibility worries me slightly? Either way I said looking not Buying in Regards to AMD's Graphics Cards. I have a 1050 Ti presently I have no reason to chuck it yet... Sides I got the Puppy Stable at 1700 MHz and 3500 on the Memory... Probably going to Skip a Gen or two like I did in the Past...

So Yeah who the are you Caterwauling at? "Couldn't Resist Sorry." I am really confused about the Politics Comment? Where did that come from?

Seeing as I am not selling anything, I have a History with both sides of the Street... AMD and Intel and Ironically used Parts from All over the Place...

I could care less about Politics... Politicians Honestly Make me Angry... Admittedly Anger is an amazing workout routine for me...

Hell my Advice is Build a Rig to Suit your Needs.... If it's me Simply Post Yes. If is not me then I am simply wasting my time talking Benchmarks which is exactly what I expected when I weighed in on this... Heck this entire comment is probably a crap shoot in the dark and the other dude might have a loaded dice...

Honestly I could probably list every Non Standard Method I use to Burn in a Computer for an Understanding of what it's got to offer, I got nothing against Either Intel or AMD I just buy what I Need to keep Trucking Along.
