I think that talking about that it's out of date is just an excuse, because this Soft Engine works great. I think It could have been conflicting with the new "facial expression engine" or it was too complex to mix em together (and by that I mean too hard to do without staff and without budget, cause DOA6 clearly didn't get shit from KT)... but It's just a guess. Honestly I loved the lighting and models under DOA5's engine. They could just have improved this one a little and put on some better textures (like, not the PS1-level of shit we put up with in DOA5) and I would have been sold.

Reason they are replacing the Soft Engine 3 is KOEI Techmo is moving forward with their in house DW9 engine , kinda like how Square Enix was back in 2008, they want to develop all future products using their own crappy Engine For comparison's sake just check DW9 models and DOA6 videos, you will see a resemblance in quality in stages and models, and similar bad quality in clothes, the only improvement i see is the inclusion of actual cloth and physics but texture and quality and polygon wise, these models for DOA6 and stages look like they were intended for an open world game

Taku Sugawara: As I mentioned, we work on the graphics engine for all of our titles. The engine won’t be used just for this project. Up until now, many Koei Tecmo games have been using their own dedicated engines. While that approach has some merits, it creates difficulties in updating those engines and implementing new tech within their environments. It’s also less cost-efficient and less-time efficient for quite a few projects. Our technical department developed the integrated development engine by incorporating the latest technologies, aiming for a new visual representation. We worked together with Team NINJA to implement it in DEAD OR ALIVE 6 and the synergy with Team NINJA’s artists helped in achieving further optimization. This feels weird, they are going to use the same engine for openworld and retool it for a 1on1 fighter, woudnt using UE4 be better cost wise and optimization wise ?? so not only are they not getting a big budget for DOA6 but they are now using some of it to develop the Dw9 engine for a 1on1 fighter instead of using a widely used and successful engine like UE4 or even the latest version of Unity

CANGT1 Posted November 13, 2018 Posted November 13, 2018 I don't know why people cry about the graphics, would you preffer DOA to look like SF5?

DavidSPD Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 Let's be honest here... the fact that DOA is trying to go more mainstream is really a good thing. Even with the old direction, they refused to FULLY cater to their fans (no canon hentai etc.) The Xtreme games were the closest thing you were going to get to first party porn. The game has always been extremely niche in the fighting scene. It's a spectacle fighter masquerading as a fighting game, and that's what it has always been, and will always be. By toning down on the needless hypersexualization, it gives the game a chance to be taken seriously by a larger audience. They're not pulling out all the stops for DOA6 because DOA5 didn't sell very well, and they butchered the IP by offering like four different versions of the game through experimentation with a free business model on consoles, a shitty PC port with stripped features, and literally hundreds of costumes, and costume "Catalogues" that made acquiring specific costumes a nightmare. They said "fuck it" and just threw up DLC en masse for Steam and it pissed people off because paying $80 for a couple of costumes you like is bull. If they decide to offer a proper title this time things have the potential to really revive the franchise. Offer a soft reboot that plays to the franchise's strengths (spectacle fighting), and still offering the sex appeal to keep fans interested, but not alienating the rest of the world with FF cups that slap the girl in the chin when they step forwards, and anime ninja girls that spend more time giggling than they do fighting. Senran Kagura still exists. I love Dead or Alive (and have since I played the first), and I only see good things coming from this. Yes, they can totally fuck it up and ruin the franchise, but considering everything they did to DOA5 (in addition to offering a terrible PC port) but are still willing to commit to trying to improve it, this is good. Any cock-blocks they try to implement will be circumvented by modders anyway. They asked us to "behave" with DOA5, but they sure as hell like the attention it got, despite how horrible it was ported, and I think the modders are the main reason PC is even seeing the sequel. A little off-topic (please don't quote just for this), but SC6 did some weird things. They toned done sexualization in some areas, and cranked it up in others. People like to mention Ivy when they talk about Soulcalibur, but it doesn't get nearly as much hate as DOA does. Regardless of the competitive scene's opinions on SC, it has consistently been something people are overall excited about, and innovation in the gameplay etc. greatly helps that. DOA has barely changed since 2. The biggest things they've focused on were sex-appeal and jiggle physics. Sex appeal and jiggle physics don't make a good fighting game imo.

You cannot give concessions to the kind of people that want DOA censored. You begin by making boobs smaller, and before you realize it, they'll all be in burkas.

Neither of us knows what their end goal is, but I will guess that their objective is not 100% censorship.

I wasn't talking about developers objective, but about the objectives of the people that force the developers to censor themselves. Those people have moralist/ideological objectives, and they are never satisfied.

I like DoA for the characters and relatively simple mechanics (I'm fucking terrible at fighting games, I just like to bash things once in a while), so the toned-down sexualization without going completely prudish is perfect for me. Plus now I won't have to go into offline mode when I play it to hide from my friends
