A few nights later, in Watson's district. I finally had some contracts on offer. I wasn't going to spit on them, even if it meant doing them past midnight. I needed the money to get a real estate property. And some wheels too, because although night-time strolls were nice, I lacked mobility. See that building with the illuminated façade right behind me? That was one of the places where the fixers operated, distributing and paying out contracts to Night City's various mercenaries. Eleanor the contractor, reporting for duty. The local fixer was Regina Jones, a former journalist who turned into a freelance operative. From her building, the view of Night City's corpo district was stunning. I didn't miss it as much as I thought I would. "So Eleanor... Are you new in town? What are your skills?" "Kind of, yeah. Infiltration and extraction over the last decade." "Good, then you'll have no trouble retrieving the stolen files from the Maelstrom. They have a warehouse north of Watson, in the industrial corner. 5,000 eddies." "Sounds fair, I'll be back before dawn. " It didn't take me long to find the warehouse where the Maelstrom gang was holed up. Mostly maniacs close to cyber-psychosis, they were quite dangerous. That's why I'd come armed, just in case. I didn't want to end up being stripped of my chrome and tossed into the sea. I took the back alley and climbed through a first floor window. Security was low, with no guards and cameras limited to the main areas. I aimed my pistol towards a noise coming from a nearby electronic device. My hearing was spot on. One of the Maelstrom guys stood in the office next door, browsing on his tablet. With these lunatics, best not to risk it and simply shoot them right in the head. The office had a locked door that I opened with a hack. It led into a corridor stocked with various warehouse supplies. I remained cautious, ready to strike back in case of any threat. The closer I got, the more I felt the heat and the noise from the data center, presumably holding what I came for. The server room was guarded by a female Maelstrom who heard me coming. Unfortunately for her, I already had a clear shot in sight. I moved to the control unit screen. Once the files were located, I could download them and leave. A fairly easy job, if you ask me. Rather than backtrack, I took the quick way out: the window closed from the inside. I landed behind the warehouse, right next to the alley I had taken to break in. However, don't be fooled, not every merc job was as smooth sailing as this one. A few days later, I might have been caught by the Maelstrom. The blast radius was massive, the small group was blown away across the landscape as if they were dummies. It was a good thing I tested the weapon from that distance. I could have killed myself if I hadn't tried it first. "Well that hit the spot!" I showed off, I deserved it after that great shot. The outer area seemed to be purged of any raiders, I had to inspect the depot. I walked into the depot. The place was poorly lit and a strong smell of rusty metal hit my nostrils. I drew my pistol and moved toward the cars. I saw the Goodneighbor guard lying on the ground, one of them mutilated and missing a leg. What the heck was that? The raiders hadn't attacked this place yet so who did this? I caught someone's attention. A spotlight illuminated the space and one of the cars opened. Had I been spotted before? Was it the noise caused by my boots? I aimed towards... Damn it. I didn't know who it was but he or she wore a suit of power armor. "You girl! Drop that toy and kneel down with your hands up. You don't want to end up like the others." I ran for cover. Oh my goodness! I was in big trouble. How was I supposed to get through this? My grenade launcher. That might be enough to destroy the power armor and the person inside. I had to create a diversion and take the high ground for a decent line of sight. I had seen this puddle next to the wagon. Gasoline, enough to give me an opening. I fired a few rounds into it, the person in the power armor ended up surrounded by flames. The smoke created a black cloud that concealed my run, I hurried to reach the stairs. Once upstairs, I pulled out the grenade launcher. I had not been followed, the flames were extinguished. I had gained enough time to deal with it. It was too busy putting its armor helmet back on instead of chasing me. Time to meet destiny. I jumped on the blue car and fired my weapon. A tremendous explosion followed, the depot was turned into a flash of color that lasted for a second. The power armor collapsed. My plan worked, I did it! I went back down, I wanted to make sure it was over. The power armor was frozen, the person inside had to be dead for the armor to stop operating. I kicked the helmet with the heel of my boot. No reaction. So that was it. Before I left, I was going to look at the contents of the wagon. It happened. I thought I had defeated it. The assault rifle dropped, the hand of the power armor came to grip my neck. I had been tricked, I just got within reach of being caught. How was it still alive? I knew these armors could absorb damage and radiation but a direct nuclear grenade? No way. I was surprised and shocked at what was coming at me. "Huh, huh. The reward is 150 caps, shouldn't be too hard for a tough girl like you." My eyes were glued to something behind her. "I want an advance on my payment. I want this weapon." "You have a very straightforward approach. I like that. Deal." This is my new toy, the baseball bat with barbed wire. I didn't have much ammunition left and it was way too expensive to buy. I was right next to the stash, I was going to be able to test my new purchase. The guard at the entrance did not see me coming and I had overpowered her easily enough. She had the key to the safe house on her, it was that red door. Not a very discreet place to lay low. It was a dark place. A candle placed on the stairway ledge allowed me to see where to go. The kidnappers had to be upstairs with the person I was rescuing. I had neutralized one of the kidnappers on the second floor. When I reached the third floor, I saw the kidnapped resident naked and tied up in the corner of the room. She looked traumatized, her eyes lost in the lit barrel in the middle of the room. As for the sleeping raider, I was her morning wake-up call. I blew her head off with one blow. She deserved it. I had no pity for those raiders who preyed on poor people, my self from a few months ago. "It's okay, I'm here to rescue you. Let me untie you first." "Oh thank you! I had lost hope, I was going to be taken to a pre-war building called BADTFL." "Thanks for the info. You can go back to Bunker Hill, the road is safe. Here, take my clothes, I have an idea how to impersonate them." The guard at the entrance was the least damaged and was about my height. If I pretended to be one of them, I could get in without a problem and neutralize them one by one in a stealthy way. Raiders were not know for their intelligence or quick thinking. This plan would work. I put on the harness and headed for the building. It was along the docks, I just had to follow the river to find the place. With my tattoos and short hair, I had the look of a raider. I was going to a perfect addition to their gang. Before I tore it up from the inside. I reached the BADTFL building. A few guards were patrolling around, only one was guarding the front door. I walked right past him: "I have a drug delivery, the others are coming with the girl." "Cool, you can drop this off in the evidence room." Like I said, they weren't very smart. The evidence room was guarded by a raider who was taking inventory of what was there. Guess who had just hit a home run with her head? Calista the batter. The advantage of a baseball bat is discretion. The problem was dealing with heavier people, they needed several hits before they collapsed. This male raider took 3 hits before I could knock him into the air. I love dogs. But not the ones that obeyed their master. I was really sorry for this poor animal but I didn't want to take any risk. The leader of the gang was forcing the door of the cells with a blowtorch. She didn't hear me sprinting to knock her down. She was strong. It took several hits before she was knocked down. She even nearly blew my head off. As I searched her for information, I saw the handcuffs laying on the desk. A security measure while I searched for the stuff that was stashed here. I undressed her and started looking for infos on the terminal. She was still unconscious but it wouldn't last. When I finished my research, I knew where to get their equipment. I moved the raider leader and locked the handcuffs behind the bars. It was impossible for her to come after me, I allowed myself to taunt her when she emerged. "Sorry my dear, but you'll have to stay here for a while. Thanks for the inventory, I'll help myself now. Have a nice day. Nice body by the way!" "Bitch! You'll pay for this I swear!
