I don't lie. I have small love to Micro$hit after forcing me to upgrade my PC for newer games, i stayed for 10 years on Windows XP and it was fine but now? I started consider reroll to Linux.

Hi, you don't know me but I'm going to step in to set some things straight on this argument as both a programmer, indie game developer (well, tried to be) and consumer of many, many games.

1) this is in no way confirmed by anything, this is one guy accusing Microsoft of possibly trying to do this over the next five years.

"Given Sweeney's somewhat notorious reputation, it's hard to see this as anything more than mere speculation and rumour"

-quote from your first link referring to the fact that Sweeney has previously made several other statement/rants like this that have all been wrong and/or crazy.

2) The platform he is forseeing as the doom of PC gaming is in fact nothing more than a new programming environment, that makes it easier for programmers to deploy windows apps to various mobile platforms, it is not the kind of thing that could forcibly prevent apps from being released through other means than the windows store and is definitely not something that could spell the doom of Win32 because it still develops apps for Win32, just in different ways.

3) Windows will not stop supporting older programs because they know that is one of the things that people choose windows for over OSX or Linux is near universal compatibility

4) The reason Win32 programs are becoming less convenient is because Computers as a whole are moving away from 32-bit processors and programs (the 32 in Win32) and towards 64-bit processors and programs as they become easier to make. Eventually (and hopefully soon) pretty much everyone will move to 64-bit programs meaning Win32 will no longer need to be supported.

5) This is not related to the issue at hand but Microsoft aren't the ones who forced you to upgrade your PC for newer games, that was either the industry moving away from supporting outdated and unsupported operating systems, or outdated hardware no longer being able to keep up. This is not called bad business practice but is in fact called technological progress.

Thank you for your time, I hope this has been educational.

Edit: Alphabetical list changed to numbers to remove emoji from the list.

Another day of "progress"

If you think staying with XP, W7 is going to last forever to begin with that's just crazy.

Skepticism is fine an all especially considering how far MS can really push when it comes to close vs open with Apple.

I get what he is trying to say, but we have all seen Windows' track record with trying to do PC gaming, games for Windows live and their app store and all weren't pretty. If it is bad, no one will jump on board.

And yes it is clearly MS is poise to compete with Steam in some respect, Phil Spencer even mentioned it straight up.

The whole first party XBox games being PC cross buy is a very clever reactive move that allows them some interesting opportunity further down the line. But I don't think the message of buying a game once and get to play on two platforms is a negative user experience. If the argument is they are doing it to get people on board, then no shit, of course they are, if they can do something valuable that their competitor can't that's just business.

OS is hardly the reason to get new hardware, hell the whole "PC gaming" thing survive because of the need of ever improving hardware year after year, although I would LOVE to see what happens if this train stops...mostly for the shitstorm it could cause and how it would forces both hardware and software developers to focus on optimization and manufacturing rather than just throwing horsepower at the problem and constantly dangle the carrot in front.
