Skyrim AE for Beginners - V 2.0.0 (3BA / HDT-SMP / HPH)

Recommended Posts

Note

DynDOLOD is, besides rechecking your LO, the LAST step before firing Skyrim up to actually play the game. It makes absolutely no sense to run it before you have everything you want installed. Even smaller questmods and companions might have changes to the landscape which should be included to run through the creation of DynDOLOD.

Basics

If you're new to DynDOLOD take a look at this tutorial video:

Spoiler

DynDOLOD

DynDOLOD can look really scary at first, so i'll try to give you an easy step-by-step guide to make it easier. But first the most important thing, make sure that you have the most recent version and the following mods (all are in the group 'Foundation') activated:

xLODGen Resource - SSE Terrain Tamriel

DynDOLOD Resources SE

DynDOLOD DLL SE - Scripts

DynDOLOD DLL SE

Happy Little Trees Add-On - DynDOLOD

?Should you use this tree mod.

R's Windmill - DynDOLOD patch

ERM - Enhanced Rocks and Mountains - DynDOLOD files

DEACTIVATE the 'Bashed Patch' before running DynDOLOD!

Tip: They are easier to find if you filter by 'LOD'.

Those are only used for the generation of the LOD files and should be deactivated for normal gameplay. So check their activation before running any part of the LOD creation. You don't want to know how often i forgot this and had to rerun the whole process... So make sure they are active!

The next thing is to make sure everything gets started via MO2 (and add '-sse' as an argument to each mod). Otherwise the generated LOD will look very different from what we added with all the changes to the world.

Also move the created files into the corresponding folder in MO2 after each step. They build upon each other.

Preparation

Make sure your AV isn't interfering! An AV like 'MS Defender' can cause the same issues as with 'Nemesis' (see 'Tips and Tricks').

Step 1 - Terrain LOD

This step will sort of 'merge' all the used terrain textures and should prevent harsh borders where different textures meet.

Setting up the Details for the LOD

This is depending on your used display and i can only give you the settings i use here. You might have to tinker with the contrast (marked Blue) and brightness (to the left of it).

Spoiler

LOD4

LOD4.jpg.0200cd3a2e76beffd4cf8d967e300a5b.jpg

LOD8

LOD16

LOD16.jpg.1c9e2e65994b0e72ddc8dfb7ac260650.jpg

As the settings are automatically saved you only have to do this once.

Creating the terrain.

Please use the following settings:

Spoiler

Terrain.jpg.e3bab0b0957b4f992b3ae482bb2a43a9.jpg

Once this has run through we're finished with part 1 and can proceed to the next step.

Step 2 - Adding roads

For this we use the tool 'ACMOS Road Generator'. The OA said that it is not necessary, but we change so much in the game that i simply feel safer starting it through MO2. The usage is quite simple, select 'Roads', point to the folder where your (in step 1) created terrain textures are and click 'Generate'. After a while it finishes the process and we can continue.

Step 3 - Creation of billboards

A lot has changed with DynDOLOD 3. Now the programm will generate the required billboards itself (which was a real problem before when authors didn't include them in their mods). As the format of the required textures has changed you will see some errors regarding this. But as this has to be fixed by the mod author so we can't do much about it. Thankfully everything still works.

I use the following settings:

Spoiler

TexGen.jpg.45d072a467a1e42e307a1351480c4f60.jpg

Let it run through and then we have everything for the last step.

Step 4 - Creation of the LOD

First of all DEACTIVE xLODGen Resource - SSE Terrain Tamriel and the Bashed Patch. Otherwise you will run into issues.

Now we've come to the last part, the generation of the final LOD. To start we have to select 'Advanced' on the first selection. Using my ini file skips this part and immediately shows the advanced screen.

Spoiler

792470048_DynDOLODSettingsK.jpg.9b838e9f29c58667b3c8dfa3d4d1b259.jpg

Now we get the screen where we can select the options we want to use. But first click on 'high' to load the rules for better visuals. Secondly tweak the settings for the trees (at the bottom of the list) as this will have an impact on your FPS.

Spoiler

526477161_DynDOLODSettingsT.jpg.7043bb54dbca5ead4e7baa719ce51b0b.jpg

As this is highly dependent on your GPU i can't tell you what to use. In general 'Billboards' are easier on your GPU, 'Level' looks better but taxes your system more. In the end you have to find out yourself what works best for you.

In the main i recommend to use the following settings (and activate everything in the top left):

Spoiler

DynDOLOD.jpg.247ece006c23aee48497c05b81fe4de2.jpg

Now you have to move the files into the folder for them, reactivate the 'Bashed Patch' and can finally enjoy your game. Have fun. ?

Some ENB require changes to the ini. I included mine in 'ENB Modified' of our files section.

Files

As i don't want the files to be hidden away in the thread (and no one will ever find them again) i'll place them here.

Character Presets

Now the hair got physics too.

DynDOLOD_SSE.ini

Here's my modified ini.

ENB Modified

Some ENB require some modification in the ini to work correctly. Here you find the ones i did for my guide.

Farmhouse - Stonewalls

This is an optional replacer for the stonewalls and floors of farmhouses. The textures are based on CleverCharfs Farmhouses mod.

Tips and Tricks

Improving FPS

Most of the mods are already in the guide, so i link to a video that still might be useful to you.

Spoiler

Improving FPS (NVidia)

This might be useful for users with a NVidia card.

Integrating DLSS and FSR into Skyrim

Another video you might find useful.

Spoiler

Flagging ESP as ESL

It is relatively easy to flagg an ESP as ESL so it won't take a slot in the limited space for ESP. As it might cause problems i recommend to do it one by one and test the game for stability issues. But usually it should cause no issues if you follow those steps.

Spoiler

1. Start 'Wrye Bash' via MO2

2. Look for the mod you wan't to flagg as ESL.

3. Check if it shows up with a 'green' text (those are the ones that can possibly be converted).

4. Rightclick on the ESP and select 'Check ESL Qualification'.

I already did the check for mods in the guide.

5. If a window pops up listing it as 'ESL Capable' proceed with the next step.

6. Rightclick on the ESP again and select 'Add ESL Flag'.

7. Repeat the steps 'til you got all the mods you want to flagg.

8. Simply close 'Wrye Bash' and you're done.

'Windows Defender' and 'Nemesis'

Spoiler

Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Defender

Open Windows Defender

Go to 'Virus & Threat Protection'

Click 'Manage settings'

Scroll down and click 'Add or remove exclusions'
Add an 'Exclusion'

Click 'Process'

Type: "Nemesis Unlimited Behavior Engine.exe" without quotes.

Loading times

I can't stress enough to install the game and the with MO2 extracted mods on a SSD/M2 drive. Skyrim and FO4 can actually use the advantages of a fast M2 drive and will reduce the loading times.

An additional option is to use a lower resolution for textures. The game will then be easier on your GPU and the smaller files will also load faster.

Resolution of Textures

Generally it is a good idea to have a better resolution for things you constantly see or get close to. Armors, weapons and skin are constantly visible so a higher resolution is advisable. On the other hand it makes no sense to use 4K for coins. Wasting system ressources for a negligable effect on something of this size.

My recommendation would be:

Mountains/Rocks         : 4K+ (Standard is 8K with MM)

Landscape                    : 2K

Armor/Weapons          : 4K

Skin                              : 2K+

Architecture                 : 2K+

Small objects               : 1K- (depends on size)

Spiky ground

This can be caused by broken cachefiles for the ENB. Those have to be rebuilt by deleting the files in the folder 'enbcache' (located in the game folder). Not all ENB versions have this.

Also make sure you didn't install the groundcovers of the 'Skyrim 3D Landscapes'.

Creation Club Content

Here i'll add personal thoughts on some of the CCC additions to the game. Overall they are a mixed bag. Some are very good, others not so much. That is the main reason i added the mod to separate the CCC from the game and give you the option not to use them.

Recommended

Spoiler

Adventurer's Backpack

This one is actually quite good. As it is the base for other backpacks i can only recommend it.

Arcane Accessories

The acessoires are quite useful and i can only recommend them if you want to delve deeper into magic.

Bittercup

Nice little questmod with different paths and loot.

Chrysamere

Very nice twohanded sword. Perfect for a knight or paladin.

Elite Crossbows

A short quest and some lore.

Farming

This one of the better CCC. You can rebuild a farm and even expand it with more buildings and NPC.

Ghosts of the Tribunal

I absolutely love it. Nice quest, nice armor and a very welcome reminder of 'Morrowind'.

Goldbrand

Lore and a good weapon. Whats not to like?

Horse Armor

If you want to give your horse a nice armor then this is a good option.

Myrwatch

A very nice housemod for a mage/spellsword. Interesting layout and it got all you'll need.

Nchaunthumz

Without the added patch for the door you'll have to go through a cave and three loading screens to reach it. Also it is quite big, so you'll have to run around for some time to really use it.

Netch Leather Armor

Another reminder of 'Morrowind' and it makes total sense that the Dunmer brought them to Solstheim. The protection from the ashes are its biggest boon when the red mountain spews the next clouds.

Nyx Hound

In itself a dismissable mod (they look really bad), but if you use the replacer (see 'Creatures' in the guide) it suddenly becomes a good addition.

Spell Knight Armor

One of my favourite armors in the game and i like the quest for it very much.

Sunder and Wrathguard

Very good quest, lots of lore and good loot. Now this is one of the better CCC.

?

The Cause

Good questmod that is a reminder of Oblivion.

The Contest

Short questmod with good equipment that can be quite useful.

Umbra

A nice dungeon-crawl. The weapon, you have to kill the previous owner first, is very good too.

Your Choice

Spoiler

Alternative Armors

Those are a matter of taste. Install the ones you like.

Arcane Archer Pack

This is one of the addons i'm always torn about. I do like the quest, but the added arrows show up as loot all over the place and the requirements to craft them are quite steep.

Bone Wolf

A not so interesting addition to the CCC. My biggest gripe is that they all look the same and this becomes obvious very fast indeed. You won't miss much if you skip this one.

Camping

Another mod most people won't really miss (unless you use 'Survival'). The equipment is quite heavy and that means less loot you can pick up.

Expanded Crossbow Pack

First they ask you if you havn't seen a crossbow before and then they add more of them to a trader. Not sure if it really fits to the lore.

Fearsome Fists

Its a mixed bag again. Some look good, others not so much. They might work for you if you like brawling.

Gallows Hall

Very interesting addon for a Necromancer. You get three additional undead summons and the player home is decent (Myrwatch is still better). But its strengh is also its weak point. Its use is primarily for a Necromancer, others will have little use for it.

Headman's Cleaver

Not really my cup of tea. But you may like it.

Necromantic Grimoire

Interesting for those who like to create undead. Not much use for anyone else.

Nordic Jewelry

This one feels just like a cash-grab from Bethesda. The items are not very good and don't get me started about the laughable quest. The only redeeming factor of the addon are the experience you're about to get (otherwise it would have ended in NOT Recommended).

Pets

One of the mixed CCC. The added pets don't do much and are only useful if you absolutely want to have one. You won't miss much if you skip it. I'd rather tame an animal via 'Ordinator'. Those help in a fight and you have a better selection.

Redguard Elite Armaments

At first i didn't like it that much. Now, with the texture replacer, it became one of my favourite armors for a Redguard. But as this is a matter of taste i leave it up to you if you want to use it.

Ruin's Edge

A very strangelooking bow. Not sure if i want to add it as a collectors item.

Shadowfoot Sanctum

Well, i wouldn't like to live in a sewer (especially with kids).

Staves

Not especially good, but not too bad either. For me (non-mage) they are just more clutter to collect...

Stendar's Hammer

Well, get into Markarth's museum and pick it up. 'Quest' is done. In addition to that it is imo oversized and its weight of 100 makes its use very limited indeed. It might be interesting for collectors but i see no further use for it...

The Arms of Chaos

Simple fetch'n'kill quest giving you two mage staffs. Not particularily interesting for a non-mage.

Vigil Enforcer Armor Set

The added quest and additional lore is fine, sadly the armor doesn't look good. I leave it up to you if you want to add it.

Wild Horses

In itself a good idea. What i don't like is the unicorn you can get and which ruined this addon for me (i don't think it fits into Skyrim).

NOT Recommended

Spoiler

Bloodchill Manor

Although it is quite nice the name and the location are way off. Who would build an extensive house/manor inside that place? And its name doesn't help to hide its inhabitants. More likely it will draw attention... I definitely wouldn't accept a dinner invitation from there.

Dead mans dread

Doesn't offer much. The armors and weapons feel out of place and getting to the house requires several loading screens. Clunky, not very interesting and its use as a housemod is questionable at best. Do yourself a favor and skip it.

Dwarven Armored Mudcrab

I guess this one is supposed to be a joke you had to pay for. Unfunny, and skip it as it adds nothing worthwhile to the game.

Forgotten Seasons

A big old facility of the dwemer. It got a 'weather control' feeling about it which doesn't make much sense as the Dwemer lived underground. What breaks it for me is the inconsistancy of the enemies inside. Having so many nature spirits in a dwemer ruin just feels off. The others may fit the theme  (aka the seasons) of the area but again in a dwemer ruin they feel displaced.

Goblins

This is a short unimpressive cave exploring quest (aka 'kill-everything-that attacks-you') and a follower at the end. The big problem with the follower is that he doesn't grow with you (weak in combat and can't use better armor) and becomes useless very fast. The Riekling you can get in Solstheim is much better and you can give him better equipment.

The only decent thing are the added mushrooms, but those seem to only grow in that cave so acquiering enough of them can become a pain.

Hedraheim

Although the exterior is nice, once you've added the missing planters, the feeling you get from it is not so good. You have a huge hall, worthy of a leader/thane, but with no one around its just an empty warriors hall.

Where are all the warriors/friends who could sit at the tables? Where's the bard singing to your guests? Where are guest rooms? In other words it is nice but imho incomplete and shouldn't be used.

Lord's Mail

Its just bad. Bad 'quest', too easy to get and the armor looks awful on top of that.

Plague of the Dead

The 'horde' is just a handful of Zombies with bad animations and a single soundeffect. You get books to summon them (but you really don't want to).

Saturalia Holiday Pack

This one feels out of place for Skyrim and more like a goofy gimmick. It is actually one i payed for and was thoroughly disappointed.

Shadowrend

Quest? Not with this one... The weapon(s) is/are not very good at all. Wile the sword is somewhat OK, the axe is a hilariously overdone gothic axe with bad textures. Imho just some wasted space on you drive.

Tundra homestead

Although i normally like Elianoras house mods this one didn't impress. It is more of a very watered down version of her Breezehome mod. Lots of z-fighting and the placement of some containers are questionable at best.

I fixed those problems with another mod, but that one causes now LOD issues (incompatible with 'JK's Whiterun Outskirts' and 'Whiterun Metropolis'). So i had to move the CCC into this category. Do NOT use this CCC!

Thanks for coming back to Skyrim and putting in the effort to do this again. If I can offer one bit of feedback it would be to put notes adjacent to the mods, especially ones that are supposed to be disabled after a certain point, after a - behind them instead of underneath them. It may be a bit confusing to new people on whether the note is meant for the mod above or below it.

Thank you so much for the super helpful guide. I'm a noob and I hope I'm not troubling you too much with some questions I have for the guide as I go along.

For Skurkbro's Nextgen Retexture Project, should I install the Parallax option?

Also, there's a note "Merge the second patch into the first one" but I only see one patch (named Missing texture quick fix) on the modlist. Could you please help? Thank you so much.

2. Found it. Clicking on 'the second patch' might help... ;)

Got to add a few config recommendations and more text. But not today... I've been on it for hours now and need a break.?

P.S.

As usual i added a few easter eggs. Have fun chasing them down... ?

Currently wondering what I messed up from 0.9.3b to 0.9.4 that makes dyndolod throw a fit. 800+ open console windows on texgen generating a broken output. ?‍♂️

Can't find them (otherwise i would have included them). ?

Hi Aylis, thank you for the detailed guide!

I'm at the end of the mod installation process where I need to run nemesis, but it doesnt show any mods I added, only the default mods (gun mod, blocking combat behavior improvement etc). Not sure what I'm doing wrong..

I'm also not 100% sure how to build my body and clothes. Maybe you could point me in the right direction?! I've installed cbbe with the slim body, so I select the 3bbb group and my slim preset and batch build? and after that batch build the armors/clothes with my slim preset?

Edit: Okay I think I solved my nemesis problem, my installed mods dont have to show up inside nemesis (checkboxes) for it to work the animations

First make sure you updated Nemesis.

Second take a look at the list in Nemesis. Maybe you have to tick a box or two.

Third make sure the mods support Nemesis (or do they need FNIS?).

AutoBody handles the shape of the body. Males do work fine with a zeroed body, for the females i'm still trying to add more presets into it. For now i'd recommend to install the 'curvy' body in CBBE. Otherwise they can get extremely thin...

Armor and clothes are already done (check 'Files'). We need a zeroed preset so the meshes will always look the same anyway.

thanks for the reply!

well XPMSSE has listed FNIS as its requirements, but I thought we use nemesis instead, since I did not find FNIS in your modlist. But yeah as I said none of the mods I installed showed up in nemesis, and I had nothing ticked, but it ran anyway and processed quite a few animations.

For Armor / Clothing I'm using Spice Gear & Minidresses Collection replacers so I need to build them myself I think. I know the basics of batch building but am no expert and did get a bit confused by 3ba and the physic mods, maybe you could share/describe your workflow or point me in the right direction. For the males I think they were already included in the download? I never used Autobody before but will have a look into it!I usually go for the slim option bc I'm no fan of  xxl breasts ;)

Thats correct. FNIS is only needed for 'Sexlab'.

For general workflow you have to check the SSEB thread. I posted spreadsheets there for every change i did in preparation for AE (which ended up with 0.9.4 here).

The settings for physics are already listed under '3BA'. And for armors they are already included in the predone bodyslides.

They are included on the main mod page of Landscape Fixes for Grass Mods.

- patches for arthmoor's town add-ons includes one for LAL
- patches for the great cities and towns includes the two for rorikstead & ivarstead

and I am waaaaaay past 'did I forget -sse' - yesterday was reinstall all dyndolod dependencies but no dice. today was reinstall all mods because I probably made a stupid mistake in the options (and make sure all plugins are cleaned) just about to see if that was the reason ?
