8k Textures for Player Only - what's the best method?

So, I've finally upgraded my Skyrim machine from an ancient macbook to a sexy, greasy GTX 1080 pc, and I am absolutely loving it! I've been surprised at the incredible performance and stability I get, even with ENB and 400+ mods.

The other day, I even tried 8k skins (from thePure) and it looked great. However, there was a small performance hit, and as I have a lot of NPCs around (Populated mod series, 3DNPC, etc), I'm worried that 8k for all females is reckless in the long run.

So, the point of this post: Has anyone got a reliable method of assigning high-res textures to the player only, while leaving everyone else in the game at 2k? I know, I should just use a custom race, but...Enai's Imperious, and Wetfunction redux (which seems to have trouble with head texture swapping outside of normal skin directories) are always in my load order.

So far I've tried Everybody's Different Redone, Bodytypes of Skyrim, and Bodychange, but none of these solutions have worked perfectly. EBD, for example, seems to skip the majority of NPCs - guards are getting 2k, but everyone else has 8k.

Suggestions, anyone?

Use a custom race

Edit :nvm didnt see u had imperious race, maybe unique character works for what u need

Yeah, I would love to use a custom race - but I like Imperious too much. Also wetfunction's texture swapping is super nice, and I have had trouble getting it to work with any method that takes the player's textures out of their default directory. EBD seemed like a good solution, but I have been struggling with it for a couple of hours, and 75% of NPCs are still defaulting to 8k.

Unique Character sounded great, but I had a couple of issues - I'm using custom head .nifs from racemenu presets, and so with Unique Character loaded, my head would disappear! If I fiddled in racemenu I could get it back, but with the default textures. Not quite sure what was going on there, but a couple of hours of frustration later I still couldn't solve the problem.

What I'm going to do now is give Bodychange another go, and see if I can't edit something in Wetfunction to enable specular swapping for a Bodychange head.

If performance hits dont bother you, its ok to play with 8k textures, it wont bloat your save. And if you use custom race, maybe replace the textures in files? And install another skinmod, but dont let it overwrite the custom race. If u are using MO it should be easy

Not really sure why you're wasting that much vram on pixellated as hell textures. regenbot compressed the shit out of them twice and those square pixels and 4:2:0 color gradations will never go away. If you're concerned with quality versus use you should be using Fair, as they aren't pixellated at all, even on 6bit TFTs.

Also CustomRaces is a thing, and changing the keywords from ______ to custom______ in TesVE is literally a find and replace all away.

So I wanted to do the same thing but with 4k textures instead of 8k, and Disparity instead of Imperious Races. What I did was install the Ningheim Race, and edited it in TES5Edit so as to apply the same changes as the Nord Race. Every racial spell / attribute that Disparity adds to the vanilla race record, I simply added to Ningheim's race record along with a "Race_Nord" keyword and finally copied over the the changes to the skill bonuses. It was actually pretty simple, thanks to this guy, even though I'm a total TESVEdit noob. I imagine it wouldn't be too different of a process with Imperious.

that's simple?

if npc use 2k version and your char use 4k version, you are wasting more ram that using 4k for everyone, to get npc crappier than your char

if the only difference is the body texture, why not just craft armorenaked1 and equip it?

a copy paste of armornaked with texturefemaleskinnaked1

a copy paste of texturesetfemaleskinnaked with \1 or whatever add to the texture path (if you have fair skin in fair skin folder, no need to open the dds to find out what it is)

half something from enderal with bodychange3

180529030013389889.jpg

same half something equipping bodychange1 from inventory

texturesetbodychange3 is replaced with texturesetbodychange1

no need for custom race for custom head textures too

in showracemenu you have some textureset for dirt, 40 year, 60 year...

add textureset fair skin, mature skin, sg.... to that and you can switch head textures there
