Random CTDs [Out of memory ?]

Hello and you have my thanks for taking the time to read this.

My theory about the CTDs I have is that they happen when the game tries to generate areas further ahead while I'm moving. However, there is something which doesn't fit in this theory of mine : after a CTD, loading my latest save will result in a CTD whereas loading my penultimate save won't, even if they are both at the same place and time ingame.

As for the usual issues : I don't have any ACTIVE mods which could conflict each other, my load order was sorted with LOOT and I cleaned all dirty plugins with TES5Edit.

I'm guessing that it should either be a memory issue or a previous version of a mod which didn't uninstall correctly because I forgot to run NMM as admin, therefore causing some sort of conflicts or something similar.

Therefore, I'm throwing this topic to get advices to fix/prevent any memory issues and to ask whether or not I should make a brand new save (it wouldn't be a huge loss since I went back to skyrim only today and am currently lv 4 or 5). In the meantime, I will do a new installation of skyrim and of my mods but I will still keep a backup of my current installation.

Were my new installation to cause CTDs again, I would then post my mod list and everything else required.

From my experience most CTDs (especially the ones that feel random) are memory related. If your memory usage goes over some threshold Skyrim using a different storage method which often leads to crashes. The more memory intensive mods you use the more often this will occur.

If you aren't using it already I highly recommend Crash Fixes https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/72725/. Among other things it can change how Skyrim handles memory storage and made my game muuuch more stable.

There's also another issue where if your save file gets too large it becomes corrupted (thanks Bethesda). If you are just level 4-5 then this is probably not the cause of your CTD but it could become a problem later. There was a mod that fixes this by changing the save file format slightly once you hit the size limit but I forget what it was called.

crash fixes is the mod you dont know anymore it also changes the save file format thats why you also need a compatible savegame cleaner if you want to delete left over scripts in the savegame and even with that savegames can crash with script heavy setups.

Also wanting to add that considering memory related crashes its way more likely one crashes due the 3.1gb limit 32bit applications have, if you use crash fixes, enb boost (enb) should be a must use aswell as its the only programm that provides a workaround for this limitation.

I would also guess a savegame related issue as memory crashes dont lead to a savegames not beeing able to load anymore. If it would be memory related that you cant load your savegame anymore you wouldnt be able to make the save in the first place as you would have crashed before.

Good that you sure about that still people here want a mod list to see it themself or to see mods that are known to create issues.

so we basicly wait for this in the meantime I can only recommend https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/85443/ which changes how skyrim loads savegames its basicly a automated version of the infamous "coc qasmoke" before loading a savegame to avoid crashes on loading.

i just use the shootgun tactic and bomb you with my first thoughts before i crash to skyrim:

that ideas get triggered in me if i read CTD:

- if its a memory issue, maybe this helps: LAZY INI

- enboost can free some memory if it run full regulary

- i have that CTD effect if i combine a bandit replacer + world overhaul that adds bandits too

(for example People of Skyrim + Deadly Wenches/SDcages Bandits)

=> symptomes: random CTD if i get close to a bandit camp, if i kill all bandits quick enough => no CTD, CTD only after those banits start to kill each other and the fight takes to long

- CTD if overhaul mod conflicts with playerhome mods

- CTD if Questmods overwrite the same area

- not sure: can LOD from different mods conflict and produce a CTD?

- water mods that arent at the end of a load order can produce that kind of CTD

- Waterfalls and Windmills can produce CDT if in conflict with a world overhaul and wrong load order

- too high string count can produce such issues (crash fix can help with that one)

- i had that issue with immersive cratures without patches

- i had that issue with convenient horses and a too high spawn rate from immersive creatures and too high horse speeds ^^

- too many mods running scan cloack on PC, like creature framework

- XMPSE cloak in combo with other mods that running cloaks on the PC can be too much on cell change (turning off cloak might help)

- well maybe a load order would be helpful after all?

- loading a heavy modded game is often not possible, especially if a lot of animations are installed

=> load your first  lal save or type "coc qasmoke" in console and after that load your latest game from there

- did you check your save with save cleaner for broken scripts or orphan scripts?

Start at the beginning and get yourself a stable installation first. Do this by following S.T.E.P. or one of the other recommended guides.

It is impossible to guarantee 'no mod conflicts'. It depends on all sorts of variables and what works for you may not work for me. Example: You have 4Gb of VRAM and run Mod A and Mod B without any problems. I have 2Gb VRAM and run Mod A and Mod B but get CTDs becuase together the two mods make demands which my VRAM cannot meet.

There is a lot of rubbish talked about Skyrim, CTDs, memory and so on. Spend some time and effort on learning about computers, Skyrim and its mods and it is entirely possible to have a good, stable game running 200 mods or more.
