Ernest Lemmingway Posted May 4, 2018 Posted May 4, 2018 As a child my family used to take road trips to Vegas to visit my grandparents while my grandfather was working as the foreman on the construction of a power plant. This was in the early '90s. On the return drive we stopped at a gas station and I saw this arcade console cabinet there that's stuck with me all this time. I don't remember the name, but I do remember some details and I'd love to find out the name. The characters are armored guys who use spiked balls on chains coming straight out from one hand to fight foes as they climb up the levels, dressed in black armor that turns red when they're hit and fails entirely on a second hit. The levels themselves have an organic look, like the walls and whatnot were made of flesh. As I said, the levels go vertically but the characters are oriented horizontally so they basically climb upwards as they defeat foes by jumping up to new platforms. So it's a "side-scroller" that goes upwards. I realize that's not much to go on but it's been over twenty-five years. I've gone through four of the five arcade playlists of World of Longplays on YouTube and I can't find it on them (they say there's a fifth playlist, but I've not found links to it).
Guest Posted May 4, 2018 Posted May 4, 2018 It was a coin-op, correct? Or was it on an old console? This may help finding it.
Ernest Lemmingway Posted May 4, 2018 Author Posted May 4, 2018 Coin-op. I forgot that in arcades their called "cabinets," not "consoles."
Guest Posted May 4, 2018 Posted May 4, 2018 I already search the full MIME database, and I didn't find anything with the small description you gave. Try to add some extra info you can remember. I will continue the search and (maybe) propose some screenshots and names. At the moment the "best search" is "Double Dragon" and for sure it is not what you are looking for.
The First Lady of Hats Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 Sounds very very familiar, first thing that came to mind for some reason was altered beast or Ghouls n' ghosts, I'm sure one of it's sequels had the ball and chain flail thing going on. Also sounds like something in the golden axe / knights of the round basket. I'll poke around a lil'
The First Lady of Hats Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 Wasn't Black Tiger was it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BPtn6_vhNQ

The graphics were a lot darker. And that's a traditional side-scroller while this one showed the characters jumping up or down platforms as they fought to advance the level.

Aside from little details like the fact that the characters' armor included a helm that covered the heads and not the faces, that the armor was matte black and turned blood red when they were hit, and that their arms were not visible at all so it looked like they had spiked balls on chains instead of arms. The color scheme was dark, as well. It was definitely graphics from 1990 onward, though. SVGA graphics, exactly like a thousand other arcade games from the early '90s.
The First Lady of Hats Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 Hrmms, at a loss then. Ghosts 'n Goblins came to mind wi' the armor description and it disapearing on hits but it doesnae really match any of the rest of yer description. also damned you lemming! Scouring the net fer this reminded me that Cocktail cabinets are a thing. Used to get dragged to the pub by me elders when I was a wee lass (because dragging childeren to places of alcohol was sorta normal back then) and spent several nigerian prince's worth of fortunes on these things. Now I HAVE TO buy one me bar, so I can feel eight years old again :3.

I honestly doubt anyone can help me find that game and that's fine. It's just something I thought of recently because I started watching arcade longplays on YouTube. And it's definitely not Ghosts 'n Goblins; I still remember when it came out and that's a wholly different game.
