So Steam doesn't work anymore...

Recommended Posts

Yeah, one day (today to be precise) I tried playing FNV through FOMM, and nothing happens. Checked to see what was going on with Steam, task manager says its there, but no desktray icon, and no activity whatsoever.

Heard sometimes its good to delete a few files from the Steam directory (a blob file being one of them) Did so, steam tried to update, updated, and then the same problem. Couldn't get it to work. So I "repaired it" through the Control Panel, uninstalling a few entries in the registry through regedit as I did so. Nothing happened.

So I uninstalled the WHOLE thing, and reinstalled it. Installation proceeded smoothly, and it all seemed to work. I then tried loading it. Same damned problem, Steam is there (in the task manager) but won't otherwise load. So I've probably lost all my installed games for nothing.

A great night tonight has turned out to be. Anyone got any ideas?

I have encountered this problem. The solution is a bit of work.

Back up your save games and mods, preferably off your computer somewhere (external drive, skydrive, mediafire, etc.). Purge everything Steam related (including all games) from your computer. If you don't already have it, download a program called CCleaner and run it. Clean your harddrive and your registry with it. You'll have to run it at least 2-3 times (both hard drive and registry), it'll miss things the first try. Once you've done all that, reinstall steam from a fresh download not an installer you already have saved.

While I'm on this note, I keep getting a "Something bad seems to have happened" error message with FOMM every time in the Package Manager, when I add a mod to the install list (it crashes) I open it again, the mod is now listed there, I install it, and it works fine.

Anyone know why it keeps doing this? I remember ages ago I had the same problem when I first used it, but can't remember what I did to get around it.

The xml files that describes your mods is corrupted!

If you don't have a backup prior to the original crash, you need to remove FOMM completly I'm afraid.

Easiest way that always works for me: Go to the Steam folder, wherever you installed it, and just delete everything except the steamapps folder. Then, just re-install Steam to the same place, and it'll pick up the apps again, and start working. No clue which part of Steam screws itself up, but this has never failed to fix it for me.
