AKM Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 I was in a forum messenger conversation. One person left. For a few days, the conversation remained... and then ALL of their messages disappeared. I'd forgotten to archive it, of course, so now I have no record of what they said, and the conversation is disjointed. Is this normal? Any way I can get back that stuff that apparently got automatically deleted? Thank you much.
Guest Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 If you are speaking about Private Messages, they do not go away automatically. They stay forever. The only possibility is that you deleted them on your own. Be aware that also Moderators have no control on PMs.
myuhinny Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 The only way their messages would of disappeared is that they deleted them. I don't think there is any other way for them to have disappeared and you yourself can't delete other peoples messages and if they left as the reply option and everything else disappears.
AKM Posted November 13, 2016 Author Posted November 13, 2016 Yes, it was PMs, I think. Not sure. The little envelope thing at the top. I'm absolutely certain I didn't delete them on my own, at least not knowingly. All I did was go back to view the conversation a few times. I think it was over about three days. The first few, their stuff was still there, after they'd left. Maybe the fifth, when I went back, having remembered the archive option, and all their stuff was gone. Maybe they came back, but I asked them about it, and they said they hadn't. Dunno.
Guest Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Sorry for the stupid question: You sure that it is not on the second page or your PMs? Or you did not move the conversation inside a PM Group (that you can create)?
fejeena Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 When you have started the PM you can not delete your first message. But you can delete all your further messanges. But you can not delete the messages of the other person ( or persons) When you delete one of your messages, in the partners PM your messages is gone. If the other person delete the whole PM you see "DELETED" But you still have all his and your messages. So if you still have the PM but the messages of the other person are missing the other person must have delete his massages. He is the only one who can do it. You can not delete his messages ! You can only delete your messages or the whole PM.
AKM Posted November 16, 2016 Author Posted November 16, 2016 Even after they left the conversation? That indicates that they came back into it after leaving, order to delete all their stuff, (including their first response to my initial post) and then left the conversation again. Is that even possible? Yes, I've seen the DELETED beside peoples' whole messages deleted (second photo), but that's not what happened in this case. Thank you for the photos, they were quite helpful. Pictures and 1000 words and all that.
AKM Posted November 16, 2016 Author Posted November 16, 2016 Sorry for the stupid question: You sure that it is not on the second page or your PMs? Or you did not move the conversation inside a PM Group (that you can create)? No, there are multiple pages, all my stuff now. I think it went from 6 down to 4 pages with all their stuff gone. In PMs? No idea. I thought that's what the little white envelope was. EDIT: Even going through Profile>PMs, it's the same thing.
fejeena Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 If you delete a whole PM it is gone, there is nothing left you can click, so can can not "activate" it again, and of course you can not delete posts in the no longer existing PM. The PM partner still have the whole PM ( marked with DELETED ) but he can not send new posts/PMs. ( it is set as "read only" ) If it is a PM with more people and one left the PM you see his username at the right is marked as "left this conversation". But he can not see and can not delete anything in the PM. I'm not sure if one of the other PM members can add him to the PM again. ( every PM member can add other people ) But I don't think it is possible, because he is still marked in the PM as "left this conversation". All othe PM members still have the PM and can read and write and delete posts. ( the PM is not marked as DELETED ) Are you sure he first delete the PM and you still had all this posts ? And some days later the posts disappeared? That should not be possible, he does not have the PM anymore and you can not delete his posts. My oldest PM marked as delete is from july 2013, and all the posts are still there. -------------------------------------- So in your case a internet-ghost must have eaten the posts
