Guest Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Yep, you heard me right. Some guy has played the same civ 2 game for 10 years now. I saw a thread on Bungie.net about it. Here's what they said: The year is 3991 AD and there are three factions left: The Celts, Vikings, and Americans. For 1700 years there has been a constant war that frequently ends up with nuclear exchange resulting in the death of over 90% of the world's population . The world is now a complete nuclear wasteland where each faction constantly attacks each other with massive armies, and when one army gets a foothold, they simply get nuked . It has been a giant stalemate for centuries. The Ice caps have melted 20 times and the world population has gone from 15 billion to an incredibly small 15 million. There are no large cities, if one does arise it is instantly nuked. The whole world is nothing but a giant wasteland with the three factions fighting for any surviving resources. The governments of each nation don't give a flying fuck about food, science, culture or any of that crap. No, all they do is bring out massive armies. Article BBC Article Reddit Page So, what are your thoughts? This is getting a HUGE amount of attention. Kind of like Corrupted Blood from WoW. The news, even on the T.V, it's a phenomenon.
Ark of Truth Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Wow. Give it another 2 years and it might corrupt on him.
windpl Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Hmm I don't remember civ 2 too good, but in civ 1 when city got nuked It will die off from fallout eventually - it makes land barren so there is no food.
thesapien Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Just one more turn... That's what I remember most. It was hard to stop. Seem to remember making engineers who could clean up nuclear waste, but if you kept getting bombed even that got hard because you didn't have the food resources to do so. But, yeah, those discovery trees eventually run out by the game's limited design so it makes sense no more science or the like. It was like maxing out a character's skill tree. Doesn't sound realistic at all given that populations were wiped out so much. It takes a large population to have working knowledge of computer engineering and thus nuclear capabilities. It would be cool if the game automatically started removing things from your discovery tree as your population shrank.
Deman40 Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 I play Civ 4 quite a bit cause there are some great fantasy mods for it.It takes some serious dedication for someone to play that long.
Insidiator Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 OK, I find this hard to believe. First of all, if there are no major cities in Civ2 you can't have huge armies. A city with a population of 1 or 2 will take MANY many turns to produce a modern unit - you need population to provide shields to use the shields to build stuff. Also, you could build SDI defenses that had like a 75% chance to thwart a nuke. And nukes were also fucking expensive. It just seems to me that in such a nuked-up world, the only battles fought would be with cheap infantry units.

And "huge armies" doesn't mean they use the top-notch stuff. I remember wearing down the enemy with wave after wave of fanatics, I think that was civ2 (or possibly civ3).
xartom Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 I haven't been playing Civ 2 now (play modded up civ 4) and whenever I get a happy populace perfect continent/country/whatever it never lasts, something bad seems to happen (all AI suddenly declare war on me, get attacked by an advanced civ, etc).

xartom Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 I would SO play Sid Meier's Fallout ! For either Civ 3 or Civ 4 they used to have a Fallout mod that's pretty fun (you can play as Vault 13, the mutants, robots, NCR etc).
