Where is the git repository and wiki now?

Recommended Posts

Look, no one here is saying that starting a wiki is a bad idea.  What we are trying to point out is that it has been tried before and failed miserably simply because those who do know how to mod spend the precious little bit of free time they can scrape together actually making mods.  Those same people for the most part simply do NOT have time to do anything else.  To make a wiki worth a damn to anyone would take a bunch of time and effort.

One of the other items that those who don't know how to mod don't realize is that there are more tools than you can possibly imagine to try to learn.  Most mod makers find this out the hard way.  They want to make something and then suddenly find that they have to learn how to use GIMP (or similar) and Blender (or similar) and so on just to make the custom sword mesh they wanted for their mod.  For a modding wiki to try to cover all of the tools that can be required would be such a monumental task that to do it right, it would take a team of people several years to do.  Unfortunately by then, interest quite possibly might have moved on.  Also something that commonly occurs is that modding techniques can change quite rapidly which would invalidate huge chunks of a wiki.

Lastly, making mods just flat out takes more time than you can imagine.  If folks do not have the patience to read and research, then they flat out won't have the patience to make mods.  You need a stubborn streak about a mile wide to be a successful modder.  The only thing a lazy modder could possibly hope to do is recolor armors or make tiny edits to someone's mod to suit their tastes.  That is hardly worth the effort of making a wiki.

To close, necessity is the mother of all invention, so if you feel it is necessary, then go for it.  Others will indeed step up and provide a little bit of help here and there, but you will need to go into it knowing that you will be doing the brunt of the work.  Best of luck to you!
