Ark of Truth Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 Anyone else getting CloudFlare pages saying that the site is offline? Seems to be more and more frequent lately too.
thesapien Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 I still haven't had any site problems, myself, since about 2 months ago (when Ashal explained CloudFlare to me (learned something new!)).
Guest Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 It's happened to me once. But it hasn't since. I wonder what's going on...
thesapien Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 Shot in the dark... Anyone using the shady Firefox plugin called WOT-SafeSurfing? I'm reading a lot of scary things about it with people starting to get pissed at Mozilla for supporting it, like it is not what it pretends to be. Dunno.

Incidentally, LL has a mostly-green rating (except for child-safe of course).

thesapien Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Been reading about how it works. The more I learn, the more it sounds like it could be a problem with using CloudFlare. Just read this from their CEO, and it may raise some eyebrows: http://www.quora.com/How-does-CloudFlare-work
thesapien Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Here's a fascinating review and story from someone who used CloudFlare, posted just a few months back in a web hosting forum, along with someone from CloudFlare disputing it: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1136292
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 My normal issues ammount to the site offline screen coming up continually, and massive issues with getting the site to load again (basically, had to restart the browser). Know a few others that've had the issue, too.
thesapien Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 It could just be thought of as the cost of the added security for LL. CloudFlare became famous/infamous after preventing DDOS attacks on a hacker's website, and the prevention of DDOS attacks seems to be the main reason admins go to them. Thus, CloudFlare ends up being the target and the number of attacks has been increasing fast since they began. So the problems could be the result of DDOS attacks. I think if I had a site that I didn't suspect would ever be the target of such an attack, I wouldn't use them though. Hey, Kashiwaba Tomoe, did you know the CEO and founder of CloudFlare, Matthew Prince, graduated from the University of Chicago Law School while Obama was teaching there? "Chicago" and "law" sound funny together, too, don't they?
Ashal Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 Just a heads up, I'm looking at moving away from CloudFlare due to the issues a handful of people are having. The problem however is that currently they save the site A LOT of bandwidth usage, bandwidth that once removed from CloudFlare will significantly increase the cost keeping the site running. As of right now the site has no ads anymore as the site was banned for it's subject matter from the previous supplier. So I'm without a way to pay for the increase of bandwidth, and I'm already dipping into my own pockets to keep the site running as is. And in the interest of transparency: Only option I can think of for paying for such a move would be to go back to adult pornographic ads as the site used before. My problem with this is that with the recent unpopular push to make the site less pornographic; adding porn ads back would be hypocritical of me. So I've clearly put myself in a bad corner here. Regardless, I welcome feedback and ideas for alternatives.

I seriously doubt any of the current users would think less of you for doing what it took to keep the doors open!
Guest †Foggy♥Sugar† Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 I'm sort of stupid about these types of things to be honest, (I don't know what CloudFlare is sorry ^^; ) I dunno if this is any help at all. I'm using Chrome on Windows 7 and GrinningDog (my roomy) has Vista but I dunno if these things even matter. When we pull up the site it just freezes entirely until it says it isn't responding and the little plug in guy pops up with the dead X_X face. It is working now (obviously) but it was also freezing up on my phone when I tried the site. Little Edit: If you need to start using Ads to help the site I know we wouldn't mind stopping AdBlocker then for this site alone, do what you gotta!
thesapien Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 I'm guessing most of us totally respect your pragmatism, Ashal. LOL, you first have to be an idealist like me in order to be labeled a hypocrite later. Pragmatists can't really be hypocrites when they adapt to the situation. I hadn't considered how CloudFlare saves on bandwidth. That makes me want to eat my words and urge finding a solution that includes using them. Have you tried contacting them or using their forums? Maybe it's a problem having to do with pages like this that constantly update even for the slightest edit to a post? Are there ways to make a forum page work better with CloudFlare? I mean, CloudFlare does have a lot of happy customers and they are always saying problems like this shouldn't persist. Maybe there is a way to get LL and CF working better together???
