This is not so funny if you grew up in NYC in the late 70s, 80s or even very early 90s.  People got stabbed, shot, pushed into the tracks for smiling at the wrong people.  Back then the first rule of riding the subway was to never look at strangers in the eyes.  14th St was especially a hot spot because the area had tons of drug activities and lots of drunken young and stupid out-of-towners.  That's why the sign was put up.

 

It's funny now in the Disney NYC Park but for a long time that shit was real.
