Molevalence Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Has anyone ever noticed that most if not all followers have a base default armor when your recruit them? My question is that sometimes when you give them armor they by default keep the armor equipped with the highest armor values. Even when removing the armor by console command after removing the final piece they restore automatically. I became aware of this when running Sanguine's Debauchery mod where when my PC and Lydia were captured she was nude for a brief moment but then her default armor was restored. Is there any way to tweak this where once that default armor is removed is removed and wont automatically restored?
Guest Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 The problem are not the armor pieces but the "Outfit", this has the priority on the items a NPC dresses. I am not aware of a console command to remove an outfit. (So every time you change a cell the default one will be re-equipped.)
WraithSlayer Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Yes, there is. What you're seeing is not specific to followers, pretty much all NPCs have this behaviour. If you open the Creation Kit and search for HousecarlWhiterun, then go to her Inventory tab, you'll see why: there's an Outfit section (which defines Lydia's armor) and an Inventory section, which has just a steel sword. Whereas the items defined in the Inventory section (like the sword) are only given to the NPC once when it is first generated in the world, the outfit items are a permanent reference that the NPC can always use. Therefore, if you want Lydia to stop pulling steel armor sets out of nowhere, you need to make her have no default outfit, and add the steel armor parts to her inventory instead. But, making changes to the base NPC will probably only apply to a new game, because the Lydia in your save was already generated with the outfit defined, so she'll keep it even if you mod it out.

You need to edit or create a mod to do it. And yes, it will work just fine. I was speaking (maybe I miss-read) about console commands to remove outfits. Cheers.
myuhinny Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Some followers also come with their default armor placed right into their body nif files so to stop them from wearing it you just have to load their body nifs up into nifskope right click their outfit and go to block - remove branch then save as. If their body is broken under the armor then you would have to replace their body files instead.

You were clear with your post, it's just that I didn't see it until I posted mine, so my "Yes, there is" was addressed at OP. Anyway, I just remembered Ultimate Follower Overhaul came with a feature that claims to: "Converts unmovable, invisible outfit follower has to regular gear that can be removed so followers will wear whatever player places in their inventory". The mod is pretty outdated and buggy by now, but I assume other follower overhauls might also have this feature, so it's worth a look, Molevalence.
Molevalence Posted April 28, 2016 Author Posted April 28, 2016 Thank you all for the responses. At least now I understand why this happens and there is a way to fix this. I will have to try and use creation kit again and do some research on the matter. Also thank you for the mod option to customize my followers but if its buggy and outdated I will play it safe and just try better to avoid getting caught in Sanguine's web of lust. Maybe after watching a few more videos on the creation kit will boost my confidence to attempt making a mod.
Guest Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Super quick training on the CK: 1) Install it and run it 2) Open the mod you want: If your NPC is from a mod, then right twice on the name of the mod. If it is vanilla then do it on Skyrim.esm, and then save right away with a new name. 2bis) Click on Yes to all on all the warnings 3) go in the "Object Window" select Actors.Actor and search by name the NPC you want to edit 4) double click on it, a new window will appear 5) Go in "Inventory" tab, you will see an option called "Default Outfit" set it to NONE (just click on the list and then type space.) 6) You may want to add in the inventory list someting or the NPC will be naked in game 7) Save & try.
afa Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Does follower managing mods like EFF and AFT overwrite vanilla outfits for vanilla followers? Come to think of it I rarely play with vanilla followers, I only notice that mos 3rd party follower seems to get their outfit manage by AFT or EFF without any outfit spawning, but I can't say I know if the author used default outfit function or just shove gear into their inventory. Well except for Serana, but she's annoying to work with in general.
