prinyo Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Is this on purpose - to discourage people from adding model based mods and keep the site more focused on scripted mods? Because I can't think of any other reason why this is. It's not to save server space as I can upload 2 files 99MB each and they will still consume 200 MB on the server. And the current browsers and servers are capable of handling uploads bigger than 1GB with no problem.
Content Consumer Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Pretty sure it's just a leftover convention. There are plenty of sites that do (or did) prevent uploads bigger than 100mb - github, steam, etc. I don't *think* there's any particular deliberate reason for it here. EDIT: LL has a limit of 100MB per file. This makes maintaining and downloading a bigger mod like this harder. Especially when there are 2 alternative versions. Like you said, just split the archive into two and upload two separate files. Textures + Meshes, maybe. Or just use something like winrar and split the archive naturally.
myuhinny Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 This is the limit Ashal has set for uploads anything bigger has to either be broken up or uploaded somewhere that doesn't have a limit. Also bigger isn't always better not everyone has ideal downloads capabilities just look a that I can't download thread or posts where people have trouble downloading big/bigger files.
prinyo Posted April 13, 2016 Author Posted April 13, 2016 Well, I tried to upload a file that is 103MB. Only 3 MB above the limit. It wouldn't have made a difference in the time it takes to download. Also dividing the file in two doesn't really help much people with slow connections as most uploaders will divide such mods the way I did - meshes vs textures which in my case resulted in a file that is more than 80MB in size (the one with the textures) So in practice splitting the mod in two doesn't really help anyone but only adds additional difficulties for everybody. Just as a side note - the speed of opening the forum pages is not related in any way to the speed of downloading files. Anyway I completely respect the rules of the site. I've send Ashal a message asking if the limit can be put to 150 or 200 MB and it is up to him to decide.
