M2 SSD is like turbo chargers for games like Skyrim and Sims 3 :P

Yes I know people buy these things for serious stuff but well my pc died so I had a good excuse! honest it was completely practical, I mean it had nothing to do with it looking cool lying flat on the motherboard and nothing to do with my inner techie wanting to play with new stuff and granted issues have happened but.

Pc takes longer to get past bios screen than to load windows desktop (by load I mean 100% load with no delay when activating any functionality like browser or steam)

What does this mean for a Skyrim gamer  and Sims 3 (4 also) 

A heavily modified version of skyrim with 200+ mods loads in under 2 seconds to main menu and loading a save game is almost instant.

But where I really noticed it was running fnis to register thousands of animations I honestly thought it had crashed because I press the button and zip the info comes up and done.

Sims 3 was notorious for long load times especially if you modded it to hell and back, we are talking load times could reach 5 minutes did a test run and with over 900 clothing mods alone it booted to menu within 15 seconds.

 

(I have a steam library setup on my m2 which is only for games like Skyrim and F4)

 

So they may try to tell you these drives are more for professional types and yes £250 for a 500gb m2 is a lot but damn this thing was worth it.

Yeah they're pretty amazing as long as you have a motherboard with the spare lanes to let them run at a full bandwidth, or even better an M2 socket with dedicated lanes.

 

Basically the only game I have now with load times is KF2 and Attila.

SSDs are okay, but given that they do tell you how much functional time left they have, make sure there's a periodic backup of stuff from that drive.

Depends entirely what you're using it for; contrary to popular belief, SSDs even under heavy read/write conditions last quite a while, especially that last two gens.

A non-crap SSD made in the last two gens will last longer than an equivalent disc hard drive, unless said drive is made specifically for security/medical cams. (which are slow as hell)

Always have backups no matter what your prime media storage is.

I went for the Asus 170 gamer pro board + i7 6700k with the m2 board slot, oldest part of the build is my 970 which will be replaced when the new pascal model comes out (if nvidia do not totally mess it up).

Interestingly I did buy an R9 Nano for the build looked so good and once again I wanted to give AMD a chance but sadly driver support is still lacking and a nasty little R9 Fury bug meant it got returned (seems the low power state is not 100% functional with the new HBM card kicked ass in everything 3d but if it shifted to low power mode web browsing/desktop work screen could corrupt completely something to do with the low power state not being able to keep High bandwidth memory stable).

 

 

the 950 pro from samsung has a 5 year warranty and the 850 pro has 10 year warranty.

 

As for my storage setup it goes like this

Media pc 2*Seagate 4tb nas drives 2* 4tb WD Red drives (plex)

My gaming pc 1* M2  500gb   2*ssd 500gb  1*HD 4TB

Wifes gaming pc 1*SSD 500gb 2* HD 4TB

 

Qnap server 2* 6TB WD Pro (5 year warranty) (daily backups from all machines to this server.

 

Budgeted replacements for the Standard 4TB drives in both gaming machines this year changing over to 6TB WD Black performance drives (5yr warranty)

 

Between all the computers at least 3 copies of every file not covered by steam cloud or equivalent and each pc is behind its own ups and business standard firewall.

 

Guess I am a little paranoid.

 

oh and all the email from the house goes through only my laptop and mailwasher.
