Dual Booting Windows 10 & 7

I've got windows 10, but it almost seems Microsoft is intentionally making games run absolutely shitty on it. I want to reinstall windows 7 on a second ssd I have, and dual boot them, 7 for when I want to game, and 10 for basically everything else.

I've been looking at some instructions, but they all assume you are going from windows 7 to 10, not 10 to 7. Anybody have a link to some good tutorials for me to do this?

I personally prefer to do things the hard way (some would say).

I disconnect ALL drives except one disc drive and the SSD that the OS would be installed on.
Install the OS. Get it updated, setup, and ready to go.
Reconnect all drives.
Use my BIOS's boot drive selector to pick which drive I want to boot from.

There ARE boot managers available that will boot to a prompt, asking which OS you want to use. SOME of those boot managers will allow you to install the different OS's side by side on the same drive (not sure how stable/safe this would be. I've never tried it.)

You could also install the a Boot Loader (GRUB 2?) inside the MBR (on old HD) of one the hard drives, probably the one you want to be loaded first in your Bios setup.

For now you can install the two OS the hard way, as Anatriax told you, just unplug the others drives and one by one install windows 7 and 10.
And then try to install GRUB 2 with the live CD in one of the SDD. Just be careful with GTP and usual UEFI partition..

Do you have multiple licenses? I would do the same thing but all I have for my pc is the win7 license. I wasted hours on hold  with MS support due to license issues for windows because of hardware failures on two pcs that had used the free upgrade and would either not activate or upgrade after reinstall even though the MB was not changed.

rabble rabble rabble.

fo4 and skyrim runs faster on w10 than w8.

doubt its worth trying to save op though, seems set on erroneous ways.

Yeah. I've noticed significant increases in performance since upgrading to Windows 10. EVEN with the 4064mb VRAM limit for DX9c games.

most people are just qqing about w10 as though its any different than any other windows. i don't know what op's stance is on that, but yeah. even on my old-as-hell laptop the games are seeing noticeable framerate improvements which boggles my mind - but i'll take it. maybe he is still running the drivers that come with it instead of installing the proper vendor updates.

Many games simply won't run on Windows 10 because their dependencies are no longer supported and most hardware vendors don't provide updated drivers.  Some vendors even put hard-coded version checks to prevent their use on new versions of Windows.

Most games even with hard coded OS can be tweaked (hard coding os was usually done in games that are quite old) and yes the os kernal in windows 10 is more reliable and faster than older versions.

I was going to do a win 7/10 setup but my own eagerness for new tech caused an issue (M2 os drives boot from a specific driver system meaning pairing it with a ssd or HD for 10/7 multi boot causes issues)

M2 drives also do not enjoy a soft restart as depending on settings low level bios drivers are not refreshed.

Anyway having that issue forced me to try and run all my games on windows 10 and I am actually quite happy that the issue came up which forced me to try new things..

Having been on steam since 2004  http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197970239393/

With 520 games, have not really seen any of my games that work worse than on windows 7.

The only issue I have had is bitch slapping windows 10 to accept versions of applocale so that I can run my japanese games.

Get a removable hard drive kit something that goes in the 5.25 slot on your pc case. Should have two slots and they should be for laptop drive size because SSD drives are all laptop size drives anyway. Have one SSD for windows 7 and the other for windows 10. When you want to boot from win7 just shut down the pc, pull the win10 drive loose and turn on the pc again. You could have a third SSD but larger size like 256gb for installing games/applications to and both drives could use the same third SSD just rename the directory somewhere so win10 doesn't alter something that win7 needs etc.

Only problem is UEFI and secureboot unless you don't want to use them I don't know for sure if you can boot without them in win10 or not.

Win10 is just shit they want to squeeze more money out of people and eventually become the computer police uninstalling anything that you didn't pay for how do they know? For now it is limited to only macroshit software but later adobe or some other big company will pay a fee to have their stuff policed too.

Forcing people to pay for stuff later by locking things down will only drive people to ask themselves do they really need this game or application? NOPE will be the answer as the economy gets worse and people think more about saving money and focusing on only the things that really matter. All of these software companies should be trying to sell sell sell right now while they still can instead of sticking it to the customer with restrictions. They want what steam has only on a much bigger scale but they won't get it.

Just as soon as somebody comes out with a linux box using a VM that can play windows based games and whatever with graphics acceleration then m$ is banished back to the console realm.

i only had to use UEFI on my iMac that is booting W10. My normal PC is normal old school boot.

the biggest problem with W10 booting, and Microsoft even made a hilarious post about it, is that it boots so fast that it takes a few attempts if you need to hit F8 to get into safemode because it just doesn't leave you enough time to react. you have to hit it when the screen first goes black but before the logo and spinner pops up.

you mean the OS they released for free for basically everyone who had legit copies of 7, 8, or 8.1? lol. squeezing those invisible coins out of you.

Not now but later, when things get worse for them we will have to put up with some crazy prices or some kind of subscription based service blah blah.

If you want to get into the bios of a pc using win10 just hold down the correct key while the computer is off and then turn it on. The constant request of that key will prevent it from booting normally and this works for win8 too.

im not talking about getting into the bios - rather the new recovery console in windows itself. doing your trick will cause many [probably older] computers to actually flip shit going BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP for a long time even after you let go. they do not enjoy that. as i said, microsoft as already acknowledged the hilarity around getting into the recovery console.

OH yep forgot about that one. Yeah it really sucks to not be able to get to the recovery console. What if the windows environment is totally screwed up and won't boot? That was the dumbest thing they ever did for win8. Viruses and spyware do a lot of damage these days it ain't like the good ol days of fixing everything in an hour. Combofix doesn't even work in win8.1 or win10. There is a lot of really sneaky stuff out there and ALL of it does something to windows files that can't be fixed at some point. Those encryption viruses will only get worse and if they ever think about encrypting some of their changes to the windows environment and not just user files for ransom then we are all in big trouble.

Maybe if there was a VM instead so the user could just run in sandbox VM and all their files are stored on another partition with the sandbox VM setup to store their files there like for example the user folders are created on that partition instead of in the usual place of c drive.

Viruses will only get worse because there is a huge virus industry that makes billions every year with ransomware and stealing of info/data mining etc. The whole hiding stuff theme m$ has going on is just arrogant and shallow. They copy apple by hiding important things, basically they are in denial and don't want to admit there could be a problem because if there is something to fix a problem then there may be a problem and that looks bad. I hate that mentality it just looks so cheap and short sighted.
