This is all assuming that Bethesda delivers mod tools for this game. By the vague terms of their original promise, "early-'16" could mean any time before June if using the most generous of semantics. And there's nothing to guarantee they won't change that...er, "reassess the original estimate based on new data."

i had an idea for a start. Not really alternative. You still play the SS.

Start normally. Knock on door, "Vault Tec calling". You tell him to go away. partner and child go into vault 111 while you are locked out. Bomb explodes. screen fade to black.
Back in house and looking in mirror like start. Your a goul living alone with Codsworth. 
Well you notice strange people going to vault 111, follow them, see whats happening. Kellog shots Nate when you find them. Steals Shaun, throws you in the cryo tube. Then the game will just begin as normal when you wake up. Except your a goul.

Writing around the main story wouldn't be too hard, I don't think. Just turn Nora/Nate(?) in to an NPC, and their quest to get their kid back as their loyalty side quest. Obviously some parts will have to be skipped over, but overall I don't think that it would affect the story much since the whole game pretty much boils down to BoS conquering the Commonwealth.

It started out as revamping the entire main questline, not just the starting conditions. The starting conditions would be Alternate Start, which would make next to zero sense if the entire main questline focuses on the player's background.
