TalkTalk Has Decided You're Filthy Porn Merchants

Today I found that Talktalk has activated 'Homesafe' on my broadband account without so much as a 'by your leave', blocking access to several websites including this one.

Went into my account and tried to turn it off. According to the settings page, you've got kids section, homework time and virus detection.

Only the virus detection was turned on, but it was still blocking. Turned off virus detection, waited for a few minutes, no joy.

After reading the help section, I had to enable kids safe, turn off everything in there, save the settings, then turn off kids safe.

Then I had to delete browser history and reboot the router before finally being able to get here.

After all that, I was feeling a little annoyed and decided to send them a message through the 'Contact Us' bit. Surprise surprise, got a 'run into an error' message.

This on the back of the hacking scandal, plus now the TalkTalk tv box has started kicking me out of Netflix every few minutes. Yet I can access Netflix through the xbox just fine.

I'm so glad my contract has finished, so I'm free to leave. Just waiting to move house, then I'll get another supplier.

TalkTalk sucks.

Used to be on TalkTalk too, quite a few years ago now though, didn't wait till the contract was up to cancel it.

Across all fields they were sub par, speed, reliability, cost and the worthless cunts who knew jack shit about anything or costumer service as they call them selves.

Switched to Virgin not much i can complain about with them, the connection is A symmetrical though so upload could be better, (quick speed test shows 64.77mps down and 3.28mps up)

I did have the same problem as you though about 6 months ago, the filter was meant to be opt-in but i found that i was already in.

Worse part is i needed to register an account to turn it off (it said you need one to enable it...) and to make an account you needed a reference number to your contract.

It said you can find it at the top of the bill, but i could not find one.. anywhere, so had to wait almost 2 weeks for the next one to come.

When i did finally have it i found after 2 attempts at registering their shitty web site didn't like firefox and i had to use internet explorer to do it...

It was a strange 2 weeks though i don't have flash installed on my PC so all the porn sites it was blocking i can't use anyway.

But what i did find odd was the amount of news websites that where being blocked, guess the children need to be protected from wrong think...

And the best part is there was still a fair amount of porn sites not blocked by it (LL was one of them though).. Wrong thing and piracy looked to be top of the priority list.

Huh. Well at least you got past that.

Finland must be the promised land of Internet. Nothing has ever been blocked (expect Piratebay), broadband access guaranteed by law, no data caps, no one ever complaining about all the porn sites i visit :P

Then again, might be cultural too. In Europe violence is a more sore subject than porn.

Hi all of our UK users,

Sadly some of the UK internet providers have decided for you what you should and should not be looking at on the internet.
This includes our website(s). We have a section in our forum where we are discussing other options besides the traditional ways of accessing our site.

Blaming TalkTalk isn't really fair though is it, the UK government pressured by parents who don't want to take responsibility for what there kids do have been the main driver of the "safe" filters and it being on by default, so you might want to give some of the blame to them

This^^^, but the truth is you can't blame the government for that either because the real problem is the people who vote for them.

Implying people actually voted for Mr. Cameron.

Mmmmm. Look at all those people in London that voted for you, David.

10,000 votes went 'missing' and I'm betting that they're not the only ones.

Literally everyone in Yorkshire voted Labour because why wouldn't people in Yorkshire vote labour.

And yet.

(For those of you that don't know, Yorkshire is the part of the country partly coloured in red. Largely labour which is red but large portions of it are tory blue)

Cameron seems to think that as long as there's money in his, his parties and his backers pockets, the whole country is fine. And that means it affects me as a student and my parents as the working class.

But hey, I'm talking about politics here and gonna face the banhammer.

Lol I live in Yorkshire, I never voted Labour, neither did anyone I know.

The last time they were in they left a pretty sour impression were I live.

Honestly I get why the torys are in power, I don't like what they do... but rather them than Labour.

I also live in Yorkshire, the poorer Southern end of it and ever since Margaret Thatcher we've always had mistrust of the Torys but I guess if they left a sour impression where you live that's understandable. But 'The people you know' doesn't really constitute a valid demographic.

Honestly there are some things with the Torys I disagree with and some things I do agree with, they're clearly doing a lot for our country to help it get back on track but targetting the poor and the students who are wanting to make their way in life is not one way to do it. I'm not gonna pretend to be one of those college students that knows more about politics than world leaders, but I do agree with labour policies more than tory policies. As a minarchist I actually agree more with Lib Dems but lets face it, they're not getting into power any time soon are they.

  • 4 weeks later...

Zen internet a UK firm is one of the ones siding with the customer, no site is blocked even piratebay, yes you pay a premium for completely unlimited (as in no limit at all) but get what you pay for.

It is a small company but kicks ass in customer service, I get to talk to the same person I know by name in tech support, they call you back if they say that they will and damn if there is a problem they do anything to help.

Now I pay 95 per month (but that is the extreme option) I get 68/19 speeds at all time and no drops unlimited + critical care cover (50% of the cost) which means a dedicated 24/7 manned phone line incase of issues (a line got damaged in a storm and was fixed within 4 hours) critical care is usually only given out to big business in most internet firms, you know how it can take 1-3 days for a BT engineer to come fix your problems, critical care means Zen calls up the priority team and you are treated like royalty.

In two months we move house, Michelle our point of contact in Zen has already planned it all out for us so that the new connection will go live within 1 hour of shutting down this house connection and (12 month contract for fibre) she has worked it out so we get dropped to lowest monthly cost 1 day before we move so that the last 4 months of contract are only charged at £11 a month.

i used to have talk talk and my internet was slow af usualy around 100kb/s or lower the contract ended and i went to bt and now i get 520kb/s usually and 700kb/s ona good day (and my friends have had simlar experiences) so i would warm everyone away from talk talk and the service and customer support is terrible
