Discord12 Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 So this might sounds like a strange question, but how similiar have the last creation kits from Elder Scrolls been? Did you guys have to learn lots of new stuff to mod for Skyrim after modding for Oblivion? I'm mainly asking because I would love to get into basic modding too, but I dont want to "waste" time by starting to mod for a game that's going to get irrelevant with the next Elder Scrolls game just around the corner. Should I start getting into it because the creation kits are the same for the most part, or is it better to wait for the next ES game and just learn the new Creation Kit?

No clue when, or if, there will be another Elder Scrolls game. Yes, there's lots of speculation. No real clues or proof. I'm fairly sure ESO will be the focus for awhile, since it's a "living" world. As far as how different are they? There are mostly the same functionalities, they're just laid out differently.
RitualClarity Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 They seem to be bouncing between Elder Scrolls and Fallout. I wouldn't wait until the next game comes out ot start modding and getting used to the modding scene. Even if some "structure" changes the experience you would gain in the next 2, 3, 4, 5 years before the new game comes out would be invaluable. The procedural changes would be trivial. Just a matter of learning the new paths and some scripts nothing much. You would have a base to work from. Shame to waste all this time waiting for a new game to learn to mod. If you do decide to mod and create assets etc. Keep their original files (resources) available that would make it easier to transfer them over to the new game when it does come out later.
Guest Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 Dramatically close to each other. And not only for Elders Scroll. If you edit a dialogue for Skyrim you will see an option (ignored) to have the dialogue for Fallout PipBoy. There are a few changes on the possible object types, some background logic related to the game, the scripting. But when you learn one, getting the next one is easy.

Much better stated than I ever could.. ..
Guest Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 Not competing with you RC. You are way better than me in explaining.
Schmendrick Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 Aside to the already stated, modding is a hobby, so there is really no way to waste time on it, as long as you are having fun.
blabba Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 The creation kit codebase has been kept the same since it's first inception from Morrowind. Lot's of the same features/layout etc... have been kept constant throughout Bethesda's games. That being said, they do change and update things in the toolset (as well as their game) to match new 3rd party tools or features they've added.

Discord12 Posted August 9, 2015 Author Posted August 9, 2015 Thanks a lot for the heads up, that was the input (and prolly the push) I needed to actualy get into it and maybe give the community a little bit back from what I got a all those years.I know there are some great guides out there (written by someone in the forum iirc) can someone point me to them? And lastly, is there a dedicated forum to modding noobs where I can get my questions off without annoying people? Since there is noone I can ask but google, I'm afraid I will need lots of help =) On a different note: I thought the next TES game was already confirmed and not even that far away?
Guest Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 About starting modding. By the area of this topic I think you will start with Skyrim. So, some basic advises: 1) Start by just learn a little the CK 2) Do a basic mod, just a test one, where you will try different things (create your own NPC, your own cell, configure something maybe a little bit of scripting) 3) Use the tutorials here, on Nexus, on Youtube. Try them, learn them. 4) Plan your real mod. Plan it before you start building it. 5) Start your mod, but avoid using the test one. Trash it, and start from scratch. 6) Ask for help here. You will get a couple of tons of help.
Discord12 Posted August 9, 2015 Author Posted August 9, 2015 I know there is a guide out there somewhere, that starts with How to get Skyrim ready for modding. But I can't find that guide again...Does anyone know it? All I find is youtube tutorials that seem to start in the middle of everything...
Guest Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Actually the only thing you have to do to start is to download the Creation Kit from Steam. (Library -> Tools -> Skyrim Creation Kit) Once installed you may want to edit the EditorPreferences.ini and set bAllowMultipleMasters to 1 Then you are all set. For tutorials just follow the "Bendu Ono" series on Youtube. Or have a look to http://www.creationkit.com
Slorm Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Careful, it's a bit of a slippery slope. I'm very much a beginner but once you start to delve into it a bit, it can start to become a little addictive There's also this site you could have a look at http://www.tesalliance.org/index.php/
Guest Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 ..., it can start to become a little addictive ... Hey! Look at my avatar title!!!

Allannaa Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Or, much as I hate to advertise for "that other site", check here. Tutorials WITHOUT YouTube In my defence, back then I didn't know about LoversLab, or I'd've started that thread here.
Kain82 Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Here's the CK Wiki it's where I learned how to use the CK. http://www.creationkit.com/ Though I grasped things quicker cause I've been modding since Morrowind.
