The Best Way To Play Multiple Skyrims

So, I've been contemplating this for awhile and I decided that before I did anything as drastic as another fresh install, I'd post my quandry here and see what some of the experts had to say. I've done a little browsing across this forum and some others, so I apologize if this topic has been covered in length before, but I failed to come across an in depth examination of it.

Simply put, here's what I'd like to do: have two different Skyrims. One for so called "serious" playthrus, with Frostfall, Realistic Needs, and other realism and experience enhancing mods enabled. Another Skyrim would be for Sexlab related "fun" stuff.

I've been running one single Skyrim install ever since I got the game a few months back, and needless to say my load order has become seriously bloated and more than a few mods are interfering with each other. My games aren't heavily crashtastic, but it's rare to get through an entire session without something (or multiple somethings) going wrong. Plus, my computer isn't the strongest beast to begin with, I have to play on the lowest graphics settings, so having so many scripts running in the background just makes things even worse.

My question is: what is the best way to achieve this goal? I've checked this nexusmods thread (http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/1000737-keeping-two-separate-instances-of-skyrim-installed/) which recommends this utility (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/19034) for handling multiple installs. There's also this utility (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/29307) that claims to do the same. However, I'm not the most adept with scripting and mod handling as it is, and both of those programs make me a little wary.

I primarily use Wrye Bash to handle my mods, which brings me to my next solution. I watched a tutorial vid for ModManager's Profiles function, and it seems very promising for what I had in mind. However, one thing concerns me: how does it handle replacer mods, specifically Remodeled Armor for CBBE Bodyslide HDT (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/25259) which is my main Vanilla replacer. If it replaces vanilla game files, wouldn't that affect a different profile, even if I don't have the .esp activated?

Additionally, i saw in THIS thread (http://www.loverslab.com/topic/38111-having-multiple-installs/) that having two different ModOrganizer instances working with ONE Skyrim install might be the better bet, as its functionally identical to having two Skyrim installs.

From people who have worked with these sorts of things, what's the best method I should use? What provides the minimal amount of hassle and frustration? Any help on this matter would be appreciated, and I apologize again if this is a retread of previously solved issues.

my skyrim serious playthrough is a hard and miserable slave life played exlusively from the immersive first person view. so i never had a reason to remove mods like sexlab because they all fit when configured appropriately. although this that you suggested is still a great idea for people with low end pc's or an intended free and more fantasy/action oriented adventure :)

Yes, a single installation of Mod Organizer with two profiles sounds like exactly what you'd need. You can install all mods you want to use for all profiles into one MO installation, then just select/create a profile and tick the mods you want for that profile and leave the ones you don't want unticked.

For your example of the armour replacer mod: you would just need to install the mod into MO and it would then be available to activate on any profiles you use. If you tick it on one profile it would be active for that profile only. Tick it on all profiles and it would be active on all. Untick it again and it no longer applies, with any files it had overwritten automatically active again and ready to go. The same goes for any mod you install and activate through MO.

MO doesn't actually "overwrite" anything, it just places files in order of priority so if there are conflicts the highest number (lowest in the list) wins. You can decide which wins by dragging mods that conflict above or below each other.

That sounds remarkably simple, pretty much exactly what the Profiles tutorial vid i watched said. I was just a little fuzzy on the replacer issue. I guess I'll give that a try and see what works for me.

Thanks very much for the post!

Use one Mod organizer and two profiles.

It handles well the mods that replace vanilla files.

MO is a blessing. I have like 4 different profiles.

Gopher on youtube has a Mod Organizer series that is quite informative and a good  'how-to' resource. Now that NMM also has profiles there are some pros/cons to each which he touches on in a later video
