He told me that he has been using HotSpot Shield for a while, and his trial just recently ran out. He asked me if there are any good services out there that can protect his identity online. I heard from a friend that there are a lot of services out there that are better than HotSpot Shield; he just never told me what they were. So, my question is what paid services do you use and trust?

prideslayer Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 You don't need any special programs or VPNs to be anonymous. Just don't enter personal information into any websites you don't want to know about you, and use whatever privacy mode your browser supports; "Private Browsing" in firefox (ctrl-shift-p), InPrivate in IE, Incognito in chrome (ctrl-shift-N). Using a VPN just obscures your source IP, which at best only lets sites guess at your rough geographical location.

He has tried Tor (which makes you use Firefox), but he likes to use Google Chrome. I'll tell him about HideMyAss, but he asked me to compile a small list, so I'll keep looking.
prideslayer Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Tor can be used with any browser, not just firefox. It functions as a simple socks proxy, which any browser can be configured to use, and many non-browser software programs as well. They recommend using only the 'official' browser though because the others still leak some information that may personally identify you. If he wants to make purchases like that, there's only one safe way to do it -- on somebody elses network. Take the laptop down to the coffee shop with the free wifi and do the transaction there, with the browser privacy mode turned on. Use a LiveCD as well so there's no possible way for any history, cookies, or malware to get stored.

He often goes to the public library, but apparently they also block video streaming sites and P2P, so a Starbucks might be the way to go. I've never heard of a LiveCD before so I'll check it out. Ghostery use only if you wanne block everything 100% It works perfectly but you need sometimes manualy aloud ghostery not blocking becouse some sites don't work as intended when ghostery enable and block all. You can also whitelist some sites you think is safe. Also use search engine Start page IP won't be known then its also very privacy PROOF. Your ghost after that Don't use IE or Chrome unless you wanne make them rich and they build a archive of who you are YOUR CHOICE? Use WATERFOX 64bit browers non profit and independed. Good luck.

But thats was not what i mean by being ghost on the net for the most part your invisble to all who try track you or wanne build a profile of you(google-facebook-microsoft to name few) thats what ghostery is for and start page. Your second reply to ark i agree completely. If most of you think ive nothing to hide or its fairytail world out there your in for s surprise in next few years comming and don't say ive warned you. Sure ignorant is bliss but if they knocking on your doorstep and demand you do what they say your tolate. Oh and learn not to value money and materials your on the right track and less to lose

Still, better not go online and do something stupid enough to get caught, especially if it's something that isn't allowed in your state (unless if its 420 and you live in Seattle or Denver). Which is why on a daily basis and whenever I come out of the door, I make sure I don't have anything dangling out of my pockets, all bags sealed shut so as not to allow anyone to push contraband intentionally, or know where the first exit out. Personally, I'm sick of the medieval age thinking that still persists to this very day.
