A Somewhat Different CtD On Save problem

This began happening MANY hours ago in the save file I'm playing in... at first I thought it was a problem with the dungeon I was trying to enter but not anymore. I've narrowed the crashing down to whenever I save my game.

The fix is somewhat simple: When I get this bug, I backtrack to an old save that doesn't suffer from the glitch, save to a new file without the CtD issue, then I can load up the file I was playing in and run along just fine. I had to do this once, and mis-attributed it to the idea that the dungeon had been re-generated (because I backtracked to a save-file before I entered the dungeon.)

It happened again during the questline for Azura's Star, which is where I defined the problem - that was yesterday.

Today, it's happened on two separate occasions.

If I extrapolate the frequency with which I encounter this bug, by tomarrow I'll not be able to play any longer. Given the extensive amount of effort and time I've put into this playthrough, I'd really rather not start over again (this was the 2nd playthrough with this character build I've started.)

if anyone knows anything, or anyone knowledgeable knows what to ask of me - papyrus logs, crash logs, whatever logs - I would absolutely love to know what's causing this problem. I'm starting to get really desperate. It's one thing to suffer a random CtD once every few hours while running out and about (My client is modded, I EXPECT that) but this is much more intimidating than the occasional 'lose ten minutes of gameplay' problem.

I have cleaned my game with TES5Edit (but not the mod files, as I don't know what the deal is with that), I've ordered my mods with BOSS. I haven't been able to view my system memory usage due to my ENB getting in the way.

I can supply any and all information asked for. I simply have no idea what information is relevant.

TL;DR: Halp, game CtD on Save becoming more common as I play through the game

http://imgur.com/5SpZit1 - Save files, since someone asked how large it was. I save often, and I don't use Quicksave as I've seen it mentioned on Sands of Time's mod page that quicksaving doesn't work well with it's scripts.

Trying to find papyrus.log now. I've enabled the feature in my ini file, but it doesn't seem to be saving a log file anywhere that I can find.

As an update, the 'safe' save file I was using to load up so I could save my game now crashes upon loading, immediately.

This is truly irritating, as my mods have not changed since that file was made.

I am now investigating how to record a load order and papyrus log, and will post it momentarily.

If you have only used BOSS for your load order you should also run TES5edit afterwards as BOSS is not a 100% fail safe as it only places what mods it know about in the correct order anything that it doesn't know about gets thrown around willy nilly to where ever it wants to throw them and you have to place them in the load order wherever the mod author says to place them if there is no specific place to move them then place them where you want to have them. Running TES5edit it will stop every time it hits a error in your load order read what the error is fix it close TES5edit and restart it again and keep repeating till it hits no other errors and is able to load up completely.

I've used TES5edit to 'clean' the 'dirty edits' from bathesda's main files & DLC, as indicated by a simple-to-follow walkthrough. I am entirely unfamiliar on how to use it for any other purpose. Is there documentation or a walkthrough for using it to manage load-order and so forth?

Have you run across a little program called Skyrim Save Cleaner yet? That might help you in this case. I've used it and it's helped in some cases. It's on the Nexus.

Can't say that I have. I'll dig around, thanks for the tip.

By any chance are you using the physics extension app for skse?

Don't know what that is. Doesn't mean it didn't come part & parcel with another mod, though. How would I check?

It wouldn't have come with another mod. Its an extension plug in for SKSE.

Have you added any new mods recently? If so I would turn them off and create a clean save( if the game will let you that is ) and play for a while to see if the problem persist.

I have not added any new mods since a long while ago.

About the save size - my Skyrim becomes a complete disaster when my save reaches 15,5Mb's. Your's are ~10 yet xD

To enable logging, in Skyrim.ini set under [Papyrus] section:

bEnableLogging=1
bEnableTrace=1
bLoadDebugInformation=1

Logs will appear in \Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Logs\Script.

my saves are somewhere around 25 - 30 mb, and that lovely game runs as smooth as i could wish for. but i also run no body mods or stuff that uses skript, i mainly got weapons / armors / smaller goodies like a "plant new stuff in your garden" mod and a couple of new lands that also come with new gear and spells... only follower mod used is ufo.

Yeah, that might be the only way to keep your save alive. xD

This is not a guarantee too though, you can screw Skyrim up completely just by installing a messed up mesh somewhere. And you'll go crazy trying to find what's wrong.

Posted

omg how many mods are you guys even using ?? mine never goes above 6mb. Previously i had 120 mods and still it was near 8mb right now i reduced all of it back to 30 mods.

Also i try to play with as not too many scripted mods.

Unmodded skyrim makes the saves only 2 or 3 mb. if it rises to high you will increase the chance for save game bloats.

You don't really need a lot of mods. You just might be out of luck installing the bugged one.

2-3mb in vanilla? That's only because it was early game i think. The save size increases as you progress with the story, leave all kinds of loot, items, objects dropped around, not just because of the script bloating.

TES5edit when you start it and it goes through your list of mods that you have installed and starts loading them into it if it hits a error in your load order it will stop and tell you what is wrong in your load order then you can fix it in your mod manager by moving the one causing the problem to the correct area or install the mod if you are missing it. Then close TES5edit and start it again till it loads up completely and doesn't hit any errors.
