Outbreak Dev Take Two

:o that looks fantastic! Keep up the great work as I quietly follow along.

Yeah I still need to adjust a few things, such as adding more variations to the distant thunder, right now I've just got it randomly selecting three with different volume settings, but you can still tell it's repeating the sound for the most part which annoyed me. I have to go digging for some decent sounds again I guess lol. Other things like including a fade in rain and fade out rain could be nice so the storm doesn't end so abruptly.

Also thinking of doing an additional weather setting now where it just does a light rain, no thunderstorms. Luckily variations are very easy to do with the system I setup.

But yeah, glad you liked it, and thx for the support :)

You really ought to have locational lightning, too. Make the lightning happen in a particular place ground-to-cloud or a set of places in the clouds and play a random thunder sound for that spot or each part of the route at the appropriate moment. Sound travels at around 400 metres per second, so lightning coming down 50m behind you should be heard 0.125 seconds after the flash, lightning coming down 1km away should be heard 2.5s after the flash, lightning going cloud-to-cloud 2km overhead should be heard 5s after the flash and lightning going cloud-to-cloud from a point 3km away to a point 6km away should be heard from 7.5s to 15s after the flash as a long, rumbling, rolling sound rather than a sharp bang.

Using a random thunder sound for each of 5 points on the route will turn 10 possible sounds into 10,000 possible combined sounds.

Adding echo would be a nice touch, although I think dynamic echo off actual scenery would be a lot of work to produce for the little extra immersion it would provide. Maybe you could tag large areas with the amount of echo they get.

To be honest with you, I really didn't think to associate my setup with real world values and such for the strikes. As for actual you can see it lightning strikes hitting the ground? I'd have to make a particle system to do that, but if I did, your suggestion on the sound speed/location will definitely be noted, and you already got me curious about setting that up now (And here I thought I was almost done! Thanks a lot lol) :P

For now though I think the basic storm setup is alright, some fancy tuning/extra work can be done later, as it works atm, and I'd like to keep moving in the interest of getting more done. I hope that makes sense :)

Oh, and thx for the input! It was very informative B)

Hey guys I'm getting the level ready today, doing the production lighting tonight (It always takes AWHILE, like seriously really long time with that lol). After that's done I'll be packaging the level tomorrow hopefully. Just giving a heads up, in case you guys would like to know what's going on with that. Still quite a few improvements to be made, but the basic setup is all there and ready for tweaks later on when I'm ready to go at it again.

I'll also be listing some guestimated PC requirements later as well to help see if your pc's can handle it. But anyway kinda excited to see how it handles for you guys, so I'm looking forward to throwing it out into the wild lol.

Testing the installer as we speak...

Now finally uploaded after having some issues earlier lol. Here's the link to the download page on my blog since I can't upload torrent files here (says I need permission):

http://obdbtt.blogspot.com/2013/12/downloads-and-patch-notes.html

So that said, go try it out, I'll be seeding for the rest of today :)

edit

And don't forget to check the Details before downloading it! There are some known issues with it atm.

Fixing the issue with the horizon issue later tonight so I'll be uploading the fixed version tomorrow if all goes to plan :)

Btw so far how's it handling for you guys? Working I hope? lol.

edit

Slow day here or something? Please any feedback will do lol. Just want to know it's working. Btw got the fixed version up now in case you were waiting on that. So as always go check it out on my blog for the link to the torrent.

I tried it out and everything seems to work well enough. Looks good and the only problems were things like missing textures/collision on stuff that you already knew about.

Yup, the textures I didn't worry about too much, as it really wasn't the focus of the piece. I can fix it for you guys though if it's an issue you want me to correct before I move onto modeling again. Just say the word :)

Also thank you very much for that comment, that silence before had me worried a bit lol.

I would like to playtest for you, but the torrent is dead right now, no peers. Any way you (or someone else) could upload to a filehost instead of using a torrent? I for one am on a night schedule and can't download since nobody is seeding. Would likely help people in other countries/time zones as well.

As far as no one replying, it's probably just because a lot of people assumed a demo was a long way off and just stopped watching the thread closely, so they don't realize there is anything to test.

Sry about that thought I had enough people seeding to give my comp a rest for a while. I just started seeding again now though, and I'll keep it on throughout today. Yeah, that could be true as well on the few replies, but I don't mind, it's there if/when they want to try it I suppose :)

As for fileshare sites, any you guys can recommend me to use? I haven't stayed to current with that stuff so I wasn't sure which was the best to use (Also needs to be free though btw).

I use mediafire.

Just checked it out and I guess I already had an account from a while back...neat how that works sometimes lol. But yeah, mediafire links for the newest version will be incoming then. I'll keep the torrents though, it's good to have options :)

Link is now up for those who want it (Same location as the torrent on my downloads page of the blog).

So, I stumbled upon this and thougth what the hell ill try out the little demo he has. I gotta say, it was better than i expected, and if the quality that you put into your environmental work is any sort of foreshadowing of the quality of your eventual game. It should be pretty good. Now I don't normally seed torrents but I think I'll leave this one up for other people to have a go at.

I did read back a few posts and saw that you were working on making the rain vary a bit, and I felt that when I was in that thunderstorm in the demo that it was much more severe than it seemed, sound wise that is. Like I saw the rain coming down heavy, but not heavy enough for the sound that I was hearing. But other than that miniature gripe, I think its coming along well. I don't know if there was any other demo content after that because I fell off the platform and didn't feel like going back through the motions.

Oh yea, and since its set in the far future, I was wondering, well... As far as character customization is concerned do you plan to have multiple races (not necessarily aliens) and along those lines do you plan to have robots as npc's and or playable race.

Anyways... best of luck on your programming and what nots, hope you don't run in to too many of dem der pesky bugs along the way.

Started half-hour download from mediafire and will take a look.

On the intensity of rain, another minor detail for the obsessive polisher: after overhead lightning, there should be a burst of heavier rain. Make it a few seconds long and ( cloud height in metres / 10 ) seconds after the flash. Technically, it's ( ( cloud height in metres + 5 ) / 10 ) seconds but who's going to notice, eh?

Also, haven't checked whether you already did this but if a thunderstorm's coming you usually see and hear it coming unless it triggers right over your head, so there should be distant thunder coming closer before the storm and distant thunder getting further away after it.

Edit: Had a look. I think the rain falls too slowly. Large drops should hit the floor at ~ 10 m/s.

Went looking for example, found this:

First thought when I saw it was that it was one of those "Suicide Mouse" videos from The Scary Thread over on the Escapist website.

Let me try again. There's actually a song called "the Rain in Hue," which is why I thought I'd find some good heavy rain videos that way. "Hard Rain" and "Heavy Rain" just bring up music videos and gameplay. No joy with Hue so let's try Saigon.

Hundreds of videos of rain in Saigon, and none of them show drops. This one does on the left side (Ignore the Irish woman in the middle and the drips off some sort of roof or canopy in the foreground on the right) if you enlarge it:

... and I just found a youtube user called SoppingClam. Sopping ... Clam? Full screen and look across the street towards Minh Doan here for more high-speed raindrops:

Yeah, everything in there is pretty raw atm, I will definitely be fixing it up later down the road. Thanks for the input btw! And the demo was just really for the day/night/weather stuff, so you didn't really miss anything else.

As for races? Just Humans will be playable, but you will be able to play as whatever skin color you like if that's what you mean. Now robots, yes there will be synthetic characters, and if everything goes to plan, there will be some robotic corruption stuff in here later on.

I have to admit you really are becoming an invaluable source of rain/storm related input, I'm going to have so many tweaks to this later on, just with your stuff alone on this :D. Keep up the good work, and a big thankyou for all your help so far B)

On a side note, going to be spending the day modeling things, so I'll let you guys know if I come up with anything that sticks.

ive been watching this thread and was wondering whats the percentage of the game?

ive been watching this thread and was wondering whats the percentage of the game?

I'm going with 5%

Hey only I can give out percents here! :P

But yeah, this is still pretty early, so early in fact that I won't give it a percent score yet lol. Working on this alongside work and real life can definitely slow us down at times. Still, things are moving along little by little, so I'm happy. Expect some camera stuff next, followed by some character modeling and some more writing (A number of areas on the blog still need to be finished).

Just had another look through the info on the site and I have an idea that would probably only work in multiplayer mode (unless your escorts and followers are awesome) but could be funny:

Charger

Unstop-a-Bull

Fitness

Quick

Long Winded

RAAAOOOOOH!!! Banzaaaaiiiiiiiiii*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud* Ha-haaaAAAaaaaa!!!!!

how big will this game be? by what the blog has for content im guessing its pretty damn big like 20 to 30 gigs? maybe more?

Honestly couldn't say atm, once I get more assets finished I may be able to ballpark how large it might be, but again that would probably just be me guessing though lol. I really do hope it doesn't get that large though, I'm going to try and be clever to keep the size down. But still if I had to guess...around 15ish sounds about right if we got everything I wanted done for it.

Haha, that would probably be pretty awesome to see. Teamwork is always so OP, jk lol.
