Precache grass issue

I don't know if this is a process unique to MO2 but I never heard of doing this before trying to use STEP and MO2.  Anyway, my issue now is that I try to precache grass (as per the STEP guide) and it keeps giving me an error that id cannot find sksevr_loader.exe.  I'm not running VR, though.  Is it expected to have that loader file anyway in standard SSE?

This is not something I've done personally, and I'm not sure if its such a good idea. However if we assume you have the correct versions of all mods involved and still want to do it, then one workaround could be to copy skse_loader.exe and rename the copy sksevr_loader.exe. See what it says about that.

Edit: Why is it not a good idea? Grass is normally rendered with a shader, that's why grass changes positions in certain situations - its not an object in the game files with a set position. If I'm not mistaken, precaching grass is going to generate about 10 GiB of data - almost as much as a vanilla install of Skyrim.

My Grass Cache is only 290MB. 🤷‍♂️

I'm not using VR and I don't appear to have sksevr.exe on my machine. I'd check that you haven't accidentally ticked a "I use VR" box or stumbled into the VR section of the STEP guide.

Just going by this mod description:

Warning before you begin: this can take a long time and generate up to several GB of files, maybe more than an hour based on your mod setup and PC. Some people with heavy load orders reported 2.5 hours generation time and 7-8 GB of files generated.

And the various posts about the process taking 6-12 hours. Sure there's probably something going wrong in these situations, I haven't read the threads.

My point is essentially a question "what are we fixing here, and is it worth the price?".

I'm surprised mine is so little, maybe it's down to the grass mods (I use Tamrielic Grass (I think)). It does take a long time to generate as it crashes frequently though it picks up where it left off.

Definitely this. I use an edited copy of a vanilla short grasses and the whole process takes less than half an hour and the total grass cache size is 443 MB.

Are you sure you downloaded the correct files? Check again, NGIO has different files specifically for VR. That's the first reason I'd consider as for why it's asking for the VR executable instead of the SE one.
