Hey hey hey guys/girls/zombies/deadra/elves..and others...

i wanted to know what it would take for me to mod my own things? nothing so hardcore where i would create a whole new world or anything lol

something along the lines of maybe, creating a race? or maybe some armor?

what would i need?

Thank you for reading, once again i apologise for any wrong grammar.

Well straight off even for the most basic things (NPCs for example) you'll need the Construction Set as that allows you to get the stuff you created in the game. Also you'll need nifskope (great for creating your own mashups) blender (something about meshes and textures, not too sure I've never actually used it) and gimp (this allows you to create or at least alter textures) that's if you want to create your own races and armours (As in truly your own armours, not just mashups) if you're like me and just want to do basic stuff and create CM partners, occasionally retexture something and attempt a mashup you'll just need the CS and nifskope.

Small steps first. You should become familiar with the ins and outs of the Oblivion construction set before diving into the deep end of the modding pool.

MEGA links to some texture packs to start off can be found in these poste here and there. The 2048 archive has quite a lot of files. Some are meh, some are great. Carefully selecting textures you like the most is key here. It's also great fun to browse these folders, a treasure trove of all sorts of skins.

A simple tutorial on custom race creation by the creator of the 'Tang Mo' race can be found here. Helpful information and easy to follow.

Do i simply edit these with programs like gimp or photoshop?

"One does not simply..."

But in fact one does. As long as you have the respective DDS plugin(s) installed for the application of your choice. To be able to open texture files in the first place and then save them in DDS format again after editing. The download for the Photoshop plugin is here, the GIMP variant there.
