Lots of silly questions...

Please forgive me posting these incredibly stupid questions.  -Just starting out gaming a few months ago.  Any of the following questions you might be able to help answer are really, really appreciated!  :)

1. Is it true that I can test out new mods as long as I do not save (autosave is turned off) ...and all will be back to normal with no repercussions?

2. If not, and I mess up my install procedure, can I really just delete the contents of my Skyrim folder and paste the contents of my backup?  I made a backup of the entire content.  Is there anything else to it besides uninstalling the mods first? Like scripts hidden in Steam somewhere or something?

3. Will the current version of Mod Organizer automatically take over the DATA folder and everything in it, or would everything stay as it is presently, just letting me just add new mods to MO for now.. until I got the hang of utilizing it?

4. I installed Skyrim to the default location, not knowing better at the time, what should I do now? Everything is in C: program files. How and what will this affect?

PS. I have been reading tutorials everyday, I promise! I am just hoping to clarify.....

1. Yes. But you have to revert the the files in your data folder back to how they were before you installed the mod.

2. Backing up and pasting everything back in is fine. I used to do that before using a mod manager. Common -> skyrim and documents -> my games -> skyrim are the only two locations for skyrim.

3. I don't use mod organizer.

4. Some random crap about administrator privileges. I can't remember what it affects but sometimes you'll need to be giving permissions for stuff. I gave myself full access on my last comp so it didn't really matter after that.

If you dont ask silly questions or find out silly things you never learn anything hehe.

I'll bet you be the one soon telling others how all works ;)

I've got my Skyrim installation on my gaming partition (so it's at D:/TESV/, you can do that with the retail version, before anyone cries pirate) and it works fine. As long as its run in admin mode once it has all the hooks for windows. And Skyrim is so malleable that you can just move and replace stuff without breaking it - much. You will have CTDs, it's a bethesda game. (CTD = Crash To Desktop, when skyrim just closes without any warning)

The best wy to keep your saves safe is IMHO to back them up (to another partition) in a seperate folder which also contains a .txt file with a mod list. So if you want to play that fancy vampire/werewolf/succubus/slimegirl hybrid again, you can just look into the list and make it work again. I had some mod builds that made anything but one play style utterly impossible, so i started to be thorough. :D

As far I can tell, Mod Organizer takes everything in your data folder, then overwrites with the mods you have, in case there's anything 'conflicting'.

1: Yes you can test mods.  I suggest using mod organizer to keep your data folder clean.  You can even create custom profiles and keep a vanilla profile so that you can play and save a vanilla game separated from a modded game.

2: A backup folder is sufficient.  The only thing stored in a separate folder are your skyrimpref.ini, skyrim.ini, save, and log files.  They are stored in documents under my games.  The ini files will be defaulted every time you run the bethesda official launcher.   Mod organizer will let you store custom ini and safe files in separate folders locally for every profile that you create..

3: Mod organizer keeps its own directory set in downloads, mods, and profiles section in your skyrim folder.  They can be easily removed, or left in place and played without if you use the official launcher.  It creates a sort of virtual skyrim mod space.

4: You will constantly have a few issues if you have steam under program files.  The best thing you can do is to move steam directly under C:\  (cleanest way to do it is to uninstall and reinstall steam.. followed by the games you want.)

EDIT: What will this affect. Mainly administrative rights will be required by programs that need to write over and edit some of your files.  FNIS, TESVEdit, Bodyslide, etc would constantly bug you about administrative privileges.  If you run them as administrator, you will get popups and sometimes there are some things that just never seem to write correctly for some reason or another.

EDIT: I have located instructions on a way to achieve the relocation of Steam https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129

There is a guide for mod organizer located here:

http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Mod_Organizer (edit: Youtube link for beginners guide provided in next post)

Direct support is provided within the step community as well.

No question is silly.  EDIT: Some questions are silly,  but none of the ones you posted here are silly or stupid by any means =p

On the contrary, you show great foresight in trying to learn how to seriously mod your game with fewer problems.

The step project wiki "Section 1" is very useful in getting started. The recommended mods in section 2, however, should be added by your own preference and judgement.

It is located here.

http://wiki.step-project.com/STEP:2.2.7

Feel free to continue to ask your questions here or there.  Both communities are very supportive and welcoming for all issues.  You will find knowledgeable people for both mod organizer and skyrim in both places.   Never be afraid to question.  There are plenty of open arms out there from many mature and friendly (albeit SOMETIMES sarcastic and moody) people.

so now my stupid answer to come !

to 1, it is correct that you can try out all the mods without risk , but it should be noted that when you overwrite an installation no data ! because when you uninstall would remove everything and it would be missing from the previous mod.

to 2 , it is always right to create a backup copy that you can too with the mods that work in your game . then you can copy that is the complete content and not have to " reinstall " all mods .
It is also correct that data is " stored " in steampunk , my counsel play in offline mode.

to 3 I personally always install my mods manually, so I best get clear. in my game are already 256 ESP \ ESM files is 59 GB in size and it runs flawlessly .

to 4 I can not say much that makes every individual.
steam is with me on a separate hard disk , because when formatting all data would otherwise be lost.

so jetzt kommen meine dummen antworten !

< just so i can multiquote neatly. (sorry, I just learned this technique and I get ridiculously happy to learn new things on the computer)

Sometimes I worry that will spell spoiler wrong & it will print      [spoiler}    some/rubbish    [spoieler]  and everyone will laugh at me.

ok. Responses and all that...

~ *Winny, How are you today?  Thank you for stopping by to give me your advice!!   :)

~ *Evasia, How sweet of you! What a really thoughtful encouragement! It brings to mind something like "the lost leading the blind" I will try and spare everyone that confusion ;)

~ *Kimbale...   AGHH!!! "Before anyone cries pirate"   lmao.....  "I hope you have a ticket for that?!" just joking.just joking.

"You will have ctd's its a Bethesda game"  bad juju and curses, all of it! Dont you put that on me!!

Really though,  I dread that feeling.

-Before I got FNIS installed properly (my fault, of course)  I was crashing like it was a party.

~ *Lodakai, what a lovely name and wolf you have there!   "A great foresight you say" That was super encouraging and sweet!  You have the capability (as I have noticed in many LL "awesome helpers types"" at explaining things in blithering idiot friendly terms for me     ...and without even a hint that you might be looking down on me for having to do so!    Your response was top flight, so helpful!!!

Thank you for the links on MO & how to relocate Steam! I need to get over the fear that I wont be able to function MO or else I will never figure it out.

I admit, while I could not find a link on how to move Steam anywhere, I have already been watching those tutorials and reading STEP on MO the past month. I know....I know.   I am just affected by this techaphobia.....    :)

I really appreciate any and all advice that is offered here.

Anyone reading that has any random tidbits of good modding advice for me feel free btw to contribute whatever you might!

I dont know how you guys do all this! I am amazed at this Matrix and everyone's abilities to make it all function while at the same time teaching people like me. lol....

Thanks again!! I appreciate the time given by everybody that stopped in here to be awesome  Digital hugs all around here!!   :)

Don't worry.  Your game is saved on steam.  If you break EVERYTHING.. just uninstall.. reinstall.. bang.. fresh start.

Get in there and try!   There is nothing that anyone else does that you can't do!  It just requires time, practice, and desire.

Don't study for skyrim too much.  It will only confuse you.  Get in there and break your game! That is what modding is.  Breaking your game and learning how to fix it.

Everyone here has been completely at a loss at one time or another.  Break your game.. come back and say oops.. and someone will have some glue handy.

Don't try to squeeze in too many mods at one time.  It is easier to add mods later than to remove the ones you installed.  Unless the author otherwise states it should be started on a fresh game.  (Usually overhauls).

Don't worry about people laughing at your mistakes.  Laugh with them.  They made mistakes too. Everyone here speaks typo fluently.

Don't ever play leapfrog with a unicorn.  Unless you are into that.

Someone led me to this gem a while back.   http://wiki.step-project.com/User:Neovalen/Skyrim_Revisited

Do not use his load out... or his mod selections.  (unless you really want to.. it is intended for high end PC's)

but he gives some pretty detailed step by step instructions on how to fix things in TESVedit etc.

You can use his loadout and examples to learn how to make things compatible.. then remove them later.

EDIT: Everything up until neovalens actual mod selection should be useful in setting up.

EDIT2: Under user interface, skip the quality world map.  you can add it later and if you get infinite load screens.. remove it

EDIT3: You will see a pattern evolving on how to adjust your mods as you go through his guide.  Just follow it with the expectation of removing everything later.  The intent is for you to pick up on the method.

EDIT4: If it is overwhelming or you get stuck on something.  You can come back to this thread and ask.

Your first post was great. Yes, glueguns will be needed, I'm sure of it   :D

"Don't ever play leapfrog with a unicorn.  Unless you are into that."  priceless.

Yes, TesVedit. I was kindly guided to this utility my first week gaming. You can imagine my confusion.  TesVedit is now the monster lurking in my closet. I know I must face him but I am scared of my ability to tango with him. So I pretend he is not there. Eventually, I will muster the courage. Until then He is lurking in there with MO.

I try to be responsible enough to admit my irresponsibility with such utilities...
