Jenneke Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I've never created any Skyrim content before and have no experience with modding from the developers end but I had an idea for a mod that without spoiling it too much, would create a tracking system and tie it to quest completions. Does anyone with experience developing mods have any advice or suggestions they'd be willing to share?
Lodakai Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Try to avoid altering existing items, npcs, and leveled lists when possible... if you want to be fairly compatible with mods such as overhauls. Be sure your modifications do not contain dirty edits or broken nav meshes. Youtube has a large number of tutorials that can help you if you look around. When you get into scripting, try to avoid overburdening the script system with frequent calls whenever possible. Be patient and try not to do TOO much too fast. Pace yourself so that you do not become burnt out. Try to keep to your short term goals. Don't let yourself become distracted with "Feature Creep" It is tempting to want to do everything that sounds cool... but get your core functionality working before wandering. Take the time to experiment with the tools before tackling your mods. Do a couple of small things first so that you can learn the quirks of modding Enjoy yourself!
Jenneke Posted October 28, 2013 Author Posted October 28, 2013 I just spent the last two hours looking through tutorials and wikis for skyrim modding. I feel like that cartoon character with crossed eyes and smoke curling out of my ears. It went way over my head. The only programming or scripting I've ever done was making a simple little webpage in html for CompSci in high school. I think I'd probably do better to find an experienced modder and team up with them and just be credited with the idea.
