Has a true patch been released yet?

A Steam client update is now available. To apply the update' date=' click the File menu inside of Steam and then select "Check for Steam Client Updates...". The specific changes include

- Fixed downloading new update while game is still running

- Fixed keeping "Do not automatically update this game" setting

- Fixed bug updating Game Settings -> Automatic Updates (New content download system only)

Makes me wonder what they mean by "fixed" after reading about the response Gregathit got.

Very weird indeed, well here is the exact message I got to further ponder the weirdness......

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

The option to disable automatic updates does not disable the requirement for Steam to install the latest updates before launching your game. This option will only allow you to delay the update until you next choose to launch the game.

There are no options for running Steam games without all necessary updates.

If you have any further questions, please let us know.

I find that quite terrible, and very poor service.. If i turn autoupdates for windows 7 off it won't switch itself back on until i tell him to. So in that regard steam.exe is very intrusive.

So how can we trust a company who will force something like this on us ?? What else could they be hiding, within there software ??

The thing is, from Steam's perspective, you are not the customer. Bethseda is the customer here. You are the product, in the sense that your use of Steam is what persuades Beth to pay Valve to distribute their software.

Having the auto-update feature always on probably makes the service more attractive to the game companies that use Steam. Against that, they're unlikely to pay much attention to the desires of game players up until the point where they start losing contracts with game publishers because they no longer have enough of a userbase.

Which isn't to say that I approve of what they're doing in this instance. But it helps to understand where they're coming from sometimes.

This is a battle between pirates and game-company not legit players and game-companies.

Politicians are always laying does that mean we get to bann them too since they can't tell the truth ??

They are blaming all gamers for only few pirates did. That is wrong.. The should only take there frustrations on individuals, who caused this.

I don't really care about steam perspectives, because they are wrong plain and simple.

Then bethesda owes me money to play there game.. :P If i am not there customer, then why did they sell me the game through there own steam website.. Steam is just the distributer. So i am customer/(Consumer)..

Bethesda can't be customer, but client. i think you got these mixed up.

As far I know we are also the costumer. I imagine that steam gets a % for each game they sell. Now with their retarded system of auto updates that means more and more ppl will play off line. When you play off line you can't see games steam wants to sell. When you can't see you can't buy so is bad for steam and bad for the ones who want sell games via steam.

And I am not speaking off all the bad publicity steam gets now.

A client is a customer. Not all customers are clients, but all clients are customers. In this case, you pay Bethseda, Beth pay steam. You're Bethseda's customer, but Beth is Steam's.

Again, I'm not saying it's right. But I'm willing to bet that's how they look at it in the boardroom.

Donkey says,

This is a battle between pirates and game-company not legit players and game-companies.

Piracy may come into it but I think that there is more to it than that.

Software producers are looking towards an "Apps" cloud based future where your computer becomes nothing but a dumb terminal. Games, just another app, will be delivered on demand in a manufacturer approved form. Mods will be permitted but stored in the central hive (and vetted for decency).

Microsoft have announced (yesterday, where I live) that Windows 8 is going to be geared to this, with all common applications available for access through its online facility.

The apps will kindly ensure that updates are universal and automatic, (and compulsory), and for your convenience, backup copies of your work will be available in case your own console, sorry PC, collapses. How considerate.

Perhaps one day you will not even be able to store data locally, but must entrust it to a secure online repository if you wish to use the application.

The motive is probably "no more physical media" thus a healthy saving of the percentage of costs involved in production and distribution, and of course no retailers.

As a side effect the relationship between vendor and purchaser is completely altered. It is now far more akin to a landlord/tenant relationship.

The landlord takes the burden of the responsibility for patching the leaky roof, but repairs are at his discretion, and it firmly remains the landlord's house. Totally different from the home buyer who can legitimately get the property company to fix his roof if the house was shoddily built.

A measure of freedom will be lost, but that is worth it I'm sure we all agree.

I would have to heartily disagree with the last statement in that more than a measure of freedom will be lost...try ALL freedom. That road leads to: "you will run this or that and nothing else." All open source programs will not be compatible and maybe even illegal. This pure and simple is a power grab. They will at first offer a period of time of free or close to it storage and then once they hook folks it will go up and up with no legal way to get around it.

No sane person would agree that this is for the good. I will fight this type of forced cloud nonsense until the day I die. I can go along with optional cloud storage as long as it is OPTIONAL. The day they try to force us into dummy terminals is the day I turn strictly to piracy. Stop and think about how vulnerable the forced cloud nonsense is. Big corporations and even governments are getting hacked left and right. True your house computer could be hacked as well but hackers normally go after bigger targets than dick or janes home computer.

Sure it makes the corporations life easier if everyone has a xbox type console computer - but since when has what is convenient for them been in the consumers best interest.

I am sorry but I just don't understand why people don't see the danger of the slippery slope that this would lead to. :(

Ben Franklin "He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither"

Frankly I dislike Steam, and the truly sad part is that the pirates are enjoying a DRM-free game and are free to apply patches when they wish.

Current people enjoying the game without Steam and potentally free of the crappy patches? Over 12657, and 3363 soon to be joining them. On ONE torrent. On 'release day' there were 100k people downloading the game.

Obviously Steam and the games protected by it are pirate proof. :P

I bought the game and don't regret it, but i'm far from happy that it was forced Steam-onry. I'm also not happy to hear that Mass Effect 3 will be on Origin. I think i'll buy it, and then download it aswell. Best of both worlds, and legal I believe as a 'backup'.

I only pray Cloud Gaming doesn't take off. I like to *own* my games, not stream them.

Given your avatar, I'm going to assume that this is one of those times when sarcasm doesn't communicate well over the Internet :)

@DocClox

I'd like to assume that the outrage expressed is just a playful extension of my original irony. ;)

You'd be surprised how many people think like that -- it's ok to sacrifice freedom for convenience. In fact, many of these same people will actively defend corporations taking away their freedoms in the form of more intrusive DRM, and less configurability/options. Basically, they want things handed to them on a silver platter and they'll take shit over quality as long as all the work is done for them.

I'm not a modder but if I were, I'd never release anything on nexus, It's full of people like this: "YOUR SHITTY MOD BROKE MY GAME!!!", "WHERE'S THE FOMOD!!!", "IT DOESN'T WORK WAAAAAAAAAH!!!"

The worst of them take the attitude, "If I can't figure out how to make this work, noone should have fun playing it either." I think that's the motivation behind ppl who support cloud based solutions that take away options. They want to force all mods down this path so they won't feel like they're missing out. Everything at one convenient location all setup and ready at a click of a button.

I guess the modding community won't escape the old paradigm that once something gets popular, it turns to shit. My only hope is sites like this continue the spirit and passion for modding.

If your modder, and someone says stuff like this in you section, and as long as you don't play his game your fine. The moment you burst into outrage and calls this troll something your the one who gets banned.

Just report the jerk and he is out of there. They just set the rulez, no trolling, so asl long your not trolling, or call any moderators name, your fine..

btw check the banned thread you will actually see the one who made this response

"YOUR SHITTY MOD BROKE MY GAME!!!",
are usually the only once banned there.

btw never feed the troll, because then your the one trolling.. :D
