New save? Or Save over?

Its pretty much as the title goes. Is it better to make a new save every time you save? Or to save over a save consistently?  I've been playing in a manner where I made a new save constantly, I never save over. But I started to save over a little bit today and I noticed my game acted... well funky.. so I can't help but ask. Is it better to save over or save fresh?

I don't really mind cleaning out about 8 gigs of saves periodically. Or just compressing them... another question, I've read somewhere that quick saves were bad and so were auto saves. Should I shut those off? O.O

Ah its confusing, any help would be much appreciated :)

godsmack ( like the new avatar btw )

why not just keep your alts in different folders ?

have been using Profile manager for over a year now

and I love it http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/10345

it keeps each characters save in its own folder

also

quick save and auto save are ok IF you dont have alot of scripts running.

IF you do have alot of scripts running with the mods, quick save and auto save may not save them correctly.

and new save is preferred for backup reasons. you cant go back to an older save if you saved over it.

I keep the first 20 saves and the last 20 saves, everything in the middle I just delete

Thats handy. I remember i was using a simillar mod for Oblivion. Thanks too.

And yes I like to save a lot as new save, somethimes there are a weird CTD in some areas so you will be unable to reload save becouse it'll crash again.

So its best to have several saves.

I make a new save before and after every quest or major action. Quick saves for in-between(like before/after entering a new interior cell).

I usually keep around 6-8 "slots" on hand, and instead of deleting the older ones, I simply move them to sub folders.

But when I start a new character, I relocate all save files to yet another sub folder. Just a little system I taken upon myself to follow.

I may be late in the conversation but I would like to add on:

Mods, Stability, and Save Games

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/articles/801/

According to this article below the Save games section, there is a T&F regarding issues overriding saves

Never overwrite a save game.

[FALSE]

The game doesn't overwrite a save game but instead deletes the old file and then replaces it with a new one. So "overwriting" a file is the same as creating a save on an unused save slot.

So yea, no problem on the technical part. However you have to consider a few other things. If you modify your plugins often then its always better to have a backup, so you could revert to the old save after encountering a problem. As the article also explains that there are no such thing as "clean saves".

Another consideration is convenience. This one is personal so it might vary by people. You'll get what I mean about the advantage of having multiple saves.

@shedidwhat

     You're welcome.

thanks dobmc

I have never read that article,

and didn't know of these possable problems..

"If you die, restart the game before loading a save game.

[uNKNOWN]

In general this shouldn't be an issue but there have been reports that some mods require a restart of the game."

"Restart the game before switching to another character.

[TRUE]

In some cases data gets carried over when you swap to another character. So the safest thing to do is to restart the game (quit to desktop) before doing so."

You keep backups of saves by compressing them into archives with 7zip, and optionally burn them to disc. Also, you create and archive an important gamesave before installing a complex/script-heavy mod (i.e. Wet & Cold); that way you can recover back your playthrough should the mod screws up.

I do it as well. times when I have pleasure I get an old safe file from my "sub folders." and play them on.
