NO RELIGION OR POLITICS! Let's keep this within the guidelines, folks.

This comes from a discussion with my girlfriends that we had while eating dinner.

So, I've been looking at the entertainment industry (movies, TV, video games, etc.) lately, and I can't get over how bad almost all of it is. It feels like there's almost no quality being put into anything anymore. Movies feel hollow, TV shows are just boring, and video games feel like more of a cash grab than anything else. That, or they're all just cheap attempts at bringing back something from the old days, like when Disney tries to remake one of their old movies, or when Rockstar "remastered" the GTA Trilogy (III, Vice City, and San Andreas) with the Disgusting Edit- I mean, Definitive Editions.

Don't get me wrong. There is SOME good stuff coming out, like Hogwarts Legacy. That game, in my opinion, has quality. It could have been better in some areas, but hey, it's still a good game (again, in my opinion). My girlfriends and I also saw Avatar: The Way of Water and enjoyed it (no, not only because we love James Cameron. We actually liked the movie because it felt like there was love put into it). Despite that, it feels like almost everyone in the entertainment industry has given up on quality and only cares about how much money they can make on practically scamming people with promises of good stuff only to deliver shit.

What do you think? Is the entertainment industry dying and beyond saving, or is there still hope?

You're really bored

?

Once upon a time, more than 100 years ago, the record was invented - at that time it was predicted that this would be the end of live music.

then came the radio ... then television ... then the music and video cassette ... followed by the silver discs

and now we have little memory sticks ... and still I can listen to live music in the Irish pub

---

By the way, theatre didn't die because of the cinema film either, etc.

---

lack of quality?

There has always been - bad films or stage plays have always existed ... but today we know almost nothing about it

We have a TV channel here in Germany - there is a series called "SchleFaZ" aka "Schlechteste Filme aller Zeiten" ("Worst Films of All Times").

what scary productions are shown there - they wouldn't even be shown as B-movies - but they were produced once - decades ago.

Kind of apples vs oranges. She's talking about the quality of entertainment, not the quantity or the technology.

Again, she isn't talking about the quantity of bad things, but the quantity of good things.

I was about to say that, but you beat me to it.

I'm not bored. This is something that really does concern me.

Is the Studio system dying? Probably not but is it significantly less healthy now than it once was? Yes. There is too much competition from other media as well as independent artists for it to maintain its strength, considerable though it still may be.

The abundance of alternatives is evidence that the industry itself is extremely healthy.

There's plenty of amazing, thoughtful, expressive films and shows available. Each made with care and love. There's also plenty of overproduced, excessively funded, safe films for mindless entertainment. Both are good. There's just so much content to sort through it can be hard to find what you're interested in.

It depends on someone tastes I guess (The Kardashians still have audience watching them and they make a shitload of money from it, don't they?).

Why do you think money-heavy companies are so unwilling to ... willing to experiment?

Look at who really runs them or owns their shares ... and then look at what has been happening in our "modern" world all the last 150 years ... with the "square stag"

The expectations that EVERY production has to make money is so high - that you have to avoid a failure at all costs ... otherwise one's own head rolls in the company

ergo, one relies on the "tried and tested" ... one "copies" the story from the last film and turns on the marketing machine

Sie schieben die Schuld also lieber auf den Verbraucher? Auch soziale Medien und die „Wake/Cancel“-Kultur haben einen großen Einfluss auf diese Verbraucher.

Interesting interpretation of my text ... It's funny what some people think they see in it

?

I am simply breaking off the discussion here from my point of view ... because it would inevitably lead into the "forbidden" area.

No. Entertainment was always bad (Dynasty, Beverly Hills 90210, etc..etc..) and it always pushed political agendas.

Yes, the old media is dying (we should all be happy for it), but new media will take its place.

The amount of 'gems' in the past are similar to the amount of 'gems' being produced today. It's just that overall, intelligence is going up and the older and wiser you get, the less bullshit you can swallow. And the amount of bullshit and hype being pushed by marketing departments is more than ever. Coupled with that, their bullshit is exposed by independent media more than ever (the whole NY Times/Pewdiepie debacle comes to mind, where they literally fabricated photoshop evidence in an attempt to make him seem like a Nazi. )

I dont think the entertainment Industry will ever die but will break. After the current model breaks since its unsustainable itll eventually be remade anew in a different form. In most cases the current system is outdated and mass produces uninspired shit. The video game market is already changing for example with many companies starting to experiment more and while many greedy practices are still there they seem to be slowly becoming less common. the movie industry is pretty fucked though they refuse to accept that times change and I kinda hope it breaks soon with new smaller groups that develop good content eventually growing and supplanting it. With current tech and accessibility the whole mass produced shit will eventually be replaced by more niche productions that still profit and become more consumer focused.

I wouldn't say it's dying, I'd say it's changing. Maybe Hollywood isn't doing well, but that's all you can about the situation. To me, American media likes to follow the same formula, people just got wisened to it during the pandemic due to having more time to consume the media. Not helping when streaming services allow you to binge watch stuff instead of needing to wait the entire week for that 1 episode, so the narrative patterns become clearer to see.

As for video games, action wise, I like American games. Story wise, I like Asian games. But I hate American games for flooding half the screen with texts & overly hand-holding. I'd say, we are still trying to figure the internet out, social media did changed how we live our lives, and recently, it is also a convenient way to distribute entertainment as well. Some people freaks out over AI art & virtual girlfriends, others glue their eyes to Tiktok. I think the media will look differently in the future than what we have now. The studios & media companies will have to adapt if they wish to survive.

By the way, does anyone remember the trend of fake vloggers & artificial viral vids? It's like a fading memory to me now.
