Someone92 Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 http://www.patheos.com/blogs/geneveith/2013/09/storming-wikipedia/Apparently the English wikipedia is too objective and unbiased so the program 'Storming Wikipedia' was initiated.According to the course facilitators the goal of these exercises is that students edit Wikipedia en masse "to collaboratively write feminist thinking into the site" and “to advance feminist principles of social justice". Students who do so will get college credit points. There a (surprisingly?) level-headed discussion on reddit about this:http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/1ljiu3/storming_wikipedia_colleges_offer_credit_to/Some examples: How about offering credit for students who contribute hard scientific information instead? I don't see how this is likely to garner any sympathy for the viewpoint they wish to promote. If anything it'll come across as wilful subversion and be counter-productive. >> it's still pretty recent that women are allowed to voteA few decades after men were allowed to vote? At a time when most adults were married, and presumed to make voting choices together?>> Remember how recent it is that women can get equal pay? From another perspective, that would be the same time men didn't absolutely, live or die, have to support their families through work? Actually the male side has barely changed since then, while women often have the choice to work or become a housewife. You see, all these injustices suffered by women were mirrored by hardships suffered by men. Society as a whole was not just shitting on women like you seem to believe. Of course they weren't, since more than half of society is female. The main problem with your beliefs is that people like you now stand in the way of real equality. You claim that the world sucked for women since forever, and quickly make the case that the world should suck for men now. There are outstanding inequalities that we need to address, and I'd appreciate it if you'd join in fixing these problems rather than moaning about past injustice that never was.Since you mentioned voting rights, did you know the vast majority of people not allowed to vote in the USA are men? Would you like to change that? And since you mentioned equal pay, and because career success is largely based on education, are you at all concerned that 50% more women go to college compared to men? Would you like to change that? Are you actually pro-equality, or do you just use your false history lessons as justification for being pro-women? (Are most of the discussion on reddit this fact-bound, civil, and constructive? Then I need to visit it more often)To the radical feminists of this forum:Read this before you post: Conspectus of the typical hate-speech of feministsIf you intend to use any of those "arguments", most likely in the intention to start a flamewar, do everyone a favor and use your time more constructively than writing a flame bait.

DoctaSax Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 Sheesh, guys, feminist thinking doesn't have to be about hating on men, and I'm getting fed up with the idea that that's all there is to it, and with people whining about the few excesses as if there's a horde of them camping outside each of your doors. Apart from the political side, feminist thought has greatly contributed to literary criticism and popular culture studies in the academic field for instance. So there's a good chance that the 15 universities offering course credit to people adding more feminist thinking to wikipedia are talking about that, not the "all men are bastards" crap, which no feminist I've ever met seemed to subscribe to, and I've met a few. To the radical feminists of this forum:Read this before you post: Conspectus of the typical hate-speech of feministsIf you intend to use any of those "arguments", most likely in the intention to start a flamewar, do everyone a favor and use your time more constructively than writing a flame bait. Yeah, with a link like that, who's really intent on starting the flame war here?
Someone92 Posted September 11, 2013 Author Posted September 11, 2013 Sheesh, guys, feminist thinking doesn't have to be about hating on men, and I'm getting fed up with the idea that that's all there is to it, and with people whining about the few excesses as if there's a horde of them camping outside each of your doors.Having worked as an equal standing officer (yeap, they are not called equal opportunity/rights officers in Germany) for roughly four years I've had to deal with way too many political active feminists, and sadly the one who uttered words like "tell her to abort it" when a pregnant women asked me for help how to combine study and motherhood, accusing me of promoting rape of women after I made an agreement with a lawyer to consult male rape victims because it was/is(?) still common that they are laughed at and thrown out by police officers when they try to file a charge, or during an information event to raise awareness for the victims of child abuse of female perpetrators accusing the man who was supposed to speak about his experience to have raped his mother or calling me a misogynist when I pointed out that having "only" 10% female employees when less than 5% of the student body is female is not a sign of discrimination (I could easily list even more examples) were the majority. A decade ago when 56k modems were still the norm and your only source of information was a the mass media I considered myself a feminist, nowadays with my experience gained during said work and the ability to inform myself via the internet... no chance in hell. So there's a good chance that the 15 universities offering course credit to people adding more feminist thinking to wikipedia are talking about that, not the "all men are bastards" crap, which no feminist I've ever met seemed to subscribe to, and I've met a few.Knowing the state of the German wiki I don't have much hope something else will happen here; criminologists who present crime statistics or scientists who present their studies with the result that women are just as often the aggressors in domestic violence cases as men are discredited as being close to groups or organizations of the extreme right-wing, people who think that something is wrong with the school system if for every 100 male graduates more than 150 female ones exist are just misogynists who cannot cope with the fact that female is the superior sex, and obviously people who think fathers should have the right to take care of their children can only be the most horrible creatures on earth.
DoctaSax Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 a lot, some of it in sentences I repeat: feminist thinking, in academia, has nothing at all to do with a "we hate men" cabal. It includes new methods of analysis in literary criticism, or new perspectives & theoretic models in cultural studies, for instance. All of it very useful to anybody in those fields, feminist or not, female or not. And yes, quite a bit of that is underrepresented because it has the f-word attached and some people have got it in their heads that it means something it doesn't. Whatever your personal experience is with certain people who call themselves feminists, don't generalize & just assume that students being encouraged to write feminist thinking into wikipedia is about spreading hate. That assumption is wrong. And I'd encourage you to consult other sources on matters of science than website articles that claim, for example, that "christianity holds to objective truth", of all things. Just because LL has been criticised for some complete BS by a hateful person who didn't want to be informed before judging us, doesn't mean we welcome the same in reverse. Letting that thread stand because provocation was given has somehow led to the idea that it's alright to blame feminism for everything bad under the sun or reduce the whole movement to the few loonies. It is not alright. In fact, no matter what we let slip in the past, we don't welcome this type of thread at all these days. Next time I have to come in here to set people straight, I'll shut it down as the piece of flamebait that it is.
Someone92 Posted September 11, 2013 Author Posted September 11, 2013 "Give me any plague, but the plague of the heart: and any wickedness, but the wickedness of a woman." (Eccles. 25:13) "Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet." (Timothy 2:11-12) "Of the woman came the beginning of sin*, and through her we all die." (Eccles. 25:22) I quote such lines when someone says feminists needs to be anti-Islamic because the Koran is anti-women; we have managed to overcome Christianity without the need to be anti-Christian. Hate-speech against the Islam will not improve the situation of islamic women. I repeat: feminist thinking, in academia, has nothing at all to do with a "we hate men" cabal. It includes new methods of analysis in literary criticism, or new perspectives & theoretic models in cultural studies, for instance. Can it be you're talking about the pseudo-science Gender "studies" which deliberately ignores pretty much all findings of biology and soziologie to come up with predefined results?
