Hi, so I'm a total newbie to LoversLab, and, although I've tried to download mods from here, they haven't been showing up in game (Skyrim), even though I saw them download in my internet window. Is there some kind of manager programme that I need to download (like Skyrim Nexus Mod Manager)? Or am I doing something wrong?

Please answer all of these questions EXCEPT number 1.

1. This should be in the Skyrim Technical Support Area. I make sure it gets moved.

2. Have you unpacked and installed the mods to the Skyrim directory?

3. Have you enabled the mods so that they load up when starting the game?

4. Have you installed all the requirements needed for those mods to function correctly?

5. Have you read this guide here?

6. Have you done Skyrim modding at all before?

Posted

2. No, I don't know how to do that.

3. No, I don't know how to do that either.

4. I think so, among other required mods, I downloaded SexLab, but, like with the other mods I tried to download, I saw it download at the bottom of my internet window, but apart from that, I didn't see any proof that it had actually downloaded.

5. I have now!

6. Yes, but only from skyrimnexusmods.com

Concerning 2:

Mods usually come archived either as .rar or .zip files. If you want to install mods manually, you need an archive programme such as 7zip or WinRAR to extract the archived files. When you extract archives, the mod will unpack to

  •  folders with names like "data", "meshes", "textures", "scripts" etc (depending on how the modder packed them)
  •  various files, usually .esm, .esp or .txt

In many cases, you will find a readme.txt amongst the unpacked files that will usually tell you in detail how to install the mod.

Basically, manual install now means that you copy and paste the necessary mod files from the directory where you unpacked them to your skyrim/data/ directory, merging the contents.

Alternatively, if you're familiar with a mod manager like, say, the Nexus Mod Manager, you can download the archived mod and install it with NMM as usual (clicking the archive in NMM and having NMM do the rest).

Concerning 3:

To enable a mod, you need to activate it by ticking its box in the game launcher of your choice. For vanilla Skyrim, when you start the game via Steam, you'll see an entry "data files" (3rd from the top). Click this, and you'll see a list of all the installed plugins of your installation, with a little empty box to the right of the plugin name. Just tick that box, and the plugin is activated.

You can also activate a new plugin from within NMM, for example.

That's it, hope it helps.

Installing mods from here is the same as installing mods from Nexus, though most mods here don't use NMM (Nexus Mod Manager). If you can, give a little insight into what mods you are trying to download. It could help speed this process up a bit. Armor mods? Race mods? Random stuff? Sex mods? etc etc.

Guessing since you have installed mods from Nexus just fine, then you already know how basic modding works. You have a mod manager, do you have SKSE (Skryim Script Extender)? Do you have BOSS (Better Oblivion Sorting Software)? These are basic necessities. BOSS will sort your load order so your mods are in the correct order, and SKSE will allow you to run heavy script mods that the game can't handle normally. If you are using sex mods, you'll need FNIS to active the animations for those mods.

Like was said above, 7zip or Winrar are used to extract the contents of the zip files you download from any site. After extracting, you'll have several folders like meshes, textures, and sometimes scripts and other stuff. Along with an .esp or .esm or both. These go in your Skyrim data folder at Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim\Data\

Something really important is knowing how to read!! Reading a mod description/requirement/installation instructions will help you majorly. Can't tell you how many times people don't read mod instructions and then come complaining that it doesn't work, yet they failed to read how to install it. Always, always read the instructions to any mod and follow them to save yourself a heap of trouble.

If you don't know what you are doing, don't be afraid to ask for help as well. It might seem like something basic and simple, but it's more important to have help if you are unsure how something works.

So it's pretty basic from here. Anything that says Meshes, Textures, Scripts, Interface, etc etc with those type of folders, will all be pasted into your Data directory (Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim\Data\). .esp, .esm, as well go in the same directory. Use your mod manager (NMM), to activate those mods. When you open NMM, it will show you all the mods you have right there on the left. Just check the boxes to activate them.

After you have your mods in the proper folders, and you have them checked in NMM, make sure to run BOSS as well to sort your load order. It won't auto sort everything, but it gets the most important stuff. Some stuff you'll have to move around on your own. If using any mod that adds animations, make sure to get FNIS as well. That also goes in your data folder, and it has a Tools folder as well. In the User folder of the tools folder, you gotta run that program "Generate FNIS for Users" to add your animations.

Hope that kind of helps. I know it's a lot, but if you have any specific questions, let us know. And if you can, provide us with some more info on what exactly you are trying to install so we can help you a bit better.

To not get a headache later on you should use a mod manager from the very beginning to install and uninstall your mods.

Afaik Wrye Bash is the only mod manager with an install order feature (though Mod Organizer might have it as well) so I highly recommend using it (or MO if it has this feature too); well, regardless you will want to use Wrye Bash anyway for the Bashed Patch.

Thanks for all of your responses! I have got SKSE, although it means that I now have to load Skyrim from a separate icon on my desktop, otherwise SKSE doesn't work. unfortunately, this means that it doesn't come up with the initial little menu with the options to start the game, settings, view the files, or quit, and just immediately opens the game. And if I use the original game desktop icon, it goes through the normal process, but once I've loaded my save, it tells me that SKSE isn't installed so it can't run SkyUI.

I did download BOSS just now, although, in true me spirit, I have no idea what to do with it now :L I have downloaded FNIS, as, not going to lie, I am trying to download sex mods, particularly Sexy Adventures in Skyrim. I use Windows 8, which I'm still fairly new to, which I guess isn't helping!

As you may have guessed, I have no idea what the hell I'm doing, I don't particularly like delving into my files and copy and pasting things, I'm likely to screw something up. That's partly why I like the Nexus, cause I find NMM so easy to use!

If any of you could talk through the process you go through when you're downloading a mod from here, maybe it would help me see what I should be doing?

Simply use the menu only for changing settings and activating mods, then exit the menu and use the SKSE icon :)
