Dark Souls style combat

Hey, I'm new here and this is my first post. It's nice to see an active community that isn't the clusterf**k that is Nexus. Well enough with the meet 'n greet, I'll get right into it.

I'd really like to change the way combat feels in Skyrim. Everything else about the game is solid, but the combat has always been lacking to me. I've used a few combat mods and they make it better, but it's still missing something that I can't quite put my finger on. I've played a lot of Dark Souls and I really think that style would do very well in the Skyrim world, so I ask for your help, advice, collaboration, awkward glances, or ultimate dismissal if it comes to that. I'm just looking for more like-minded people.

I have zero animation experience and zero modding experience, but I'm a quick learner. The past couple days I've been learning the ropes of 3DS Max '12 while animating a dodge roll, as I think that's the first thing I'd like to add, and it's coming along. Other things to be added later:

Lock-on system (possibly tweaking http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/33791)
Improved AI to suit the slower swings and animating dodgeable attacks
Reworking the stamina system to have faster regen and adjusting the cost of different moves
Parrying (this will be the hardest part I think)

I lied about the ultimate dismissal part, I'm really looking for some positive input and/or constructive criticism. Collaboration/help would be even better.

Since OP plans to actively create the mod and is looking for collaboration, I'll leave this thread open. If it were a mere request seeking for someone else doing the work for him, the WCIF thread would indeed be a better place to ask.

I already combined a few mods and have a pretty good Dark souls feel. There all on nexus so there's no point to me linking them.

TKdodge - lets your character dodge attacks

Male animation improvement - Has a dodge roll in the pack of animations

Ultimate Combat - adds dodges to enemies and lets you preform timed blocks that stagger enemies good for parrying. also adds stamina costs to attacks.

Better enemy ai - Makes enemies more aggressive; needed if you use melee weapon range fix since your going to dodge more of there attacks.

Dual wield parry - lets you parry attacks without a shield when using ultimate combat

Melee weapon range fix - shortens swing distance

The dance of death - increases back stab rate

lock-on - o look you already found it.

colorful magic - pine resins and dark soul style spells

No death mod - can be configured to place your character outside of the dungeon when you lose instead of just reloading saves.

dynamic difficulty - makes difficulty increase and decrease based on how well you do in combat. (kind of a demon souls feel.)

alternate stat system - gets rid of the horrible skyrim stat system for on that's modified by your skill gains. gets rid of health or magick stacking.

Personally I use SPERG instead of something like Skyre or requiem since I end up over writing 95% of those mods with my nitpicky mod selection.

Man if you ever manage to pull this off and make Skyrim combat feel Dark Soul-y i'll personally give you 100 internets and declare you my official greatest hero of all times.

Unfortunately I can't help you in any other way than showing you my support and interest

Very helpful list of mods. I'm going to check these out and see how it plays but this is a great framework to go from regardless. I'm surprised you didn't add the Dark Souls Bonfires mod to your list.

For anyone looking for the general visuals of DS, I recommend using RealVision ENB with Realistic Lighting Overhaul and CoT, with a dash of Volumetric Fog. The DoF from RealVision really adds a huge Dark Souls feel, especially when there's a dragon or other huge creature in the distance. I assume most of you know these mods already, but there it is. Another great mod to add is Icebreakers Improved Reverb. It really gives the sound a sense of space that Skyrim was definitely lacking otherwise.

And @Endiness I actually didn't post that, but it's good to see this is something a lot of people seem to want.

Yeah, I tried not to list anything that could easily be found by just searching for "skyrim dark souls mods" in google lol

I did forget: Immersive Sounds - Magic.

Shit sounds just like dark souls magic effects.

I wonder, would it be possible to incorporate bloodstains into a no-death mod? A similar concept, where you would lose money or valuables and would have to fight your way back to your death point?

Lol, I don't think you understand what I mean.

I'm referring to the gameplay mechanic in Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, where you have to return to your point of death (bloodstain) after death to regain your souls.

It wouldn't be too difficult, would it? Just a quick script and an interactive decal.

You die, you lose all your stuff, and have to fight your way back to retrieve your lost gear. I can't imagine it would be that hard to put together.

oooooooooohhhhhhhh i got it!, and please dont say dark souls, ol Diablo used this before bandai had the idea 1st

and nope, in fact no one has managed to do this yet, mainly because of TES/Fallout save mechanic who reloads everything to the last point you saved before, it serves as a Failsafe method for Buggy mods or buggy script compilations

For one thing, you're definitely going to need animations. I wonder if it's even possible to make certain types of weapons animate differently from each other ( like Glass Battle Axe has a spinning standing power attack while Ebony Battle Axe has an overhead type of power attack )

Essentially, i'm wondering if it's possible to create a whole new weapon animation library file thing a majig, then have the game redirect to it via script or whatnot for at least vanilla weapons. If the above is possible then, well, you know, SPEARS are possible.

There's already a mod for this i think, on the Nexus. Called Dragon's Souls i think.

Heh a damage multiplier mod and skytweaks timed block goes a long way for more lethal combat.
Feels like I'm playing almost a hotline miami but closer to chivalry medieval warfare.

skyrims combat is simple.....
too many scripts and they'll start to fall behind.
chance that the script can load fast enough allowing you to dodge that war hammer and .....nope not this time....
wheres a quick sheild bash can give you the time to counter attack.

also makes mages truly terrifying......i hate lighting mages most of all.....
...fecking.....
...give a bot a sniper style....
..funny how their spells can do so much more damage then mine.....even with...perks....

I don't know its just me but i really think its better off adding a high damage multiplayer and keeping skyrims combat the way it is....only more lethal....none of this awful heavy armor unkillable nonsense...
too many scripts and things start to .....start to......"sag" and....crash.

Trust me, only a handful of people would think like this. In Skyrim modding community, it has been in a wishlist for a long time to mess the hell outta Skyrim's combat brutally with good gameplay/combat mods (especially if it's dark souls-related) until it doesn't feel like we're playing Skyrim.

Because, let's face it, how many people would like some kind of combat where every weapon hit felt like cutting through a butter or air? Not many.
