Any tips for reducing load times for saves?

I am all of the sudden experiencing atrocious load times, when loading a saved game.    When I load a save after starting the game, it takes at least 3 minutes to load.    If I try to load during the game, it takes 10-15 minutes.

If I'm at a point where I'm trying to get past some bad guys, and dying over and over, I am really not having any fun, because I find myself sitting staring at a loading screen more than I'm actually playing.

I have looked around, done what research I could, and here is what I've tried so far.

-tried deleting saved games to have only about 10 or so in the folder

-tried starting a new game and then loading my save

-tried saving in a new slot, not overwriting anything.

-all forms of autosave are disabled, except CASM

Here is my load order if it helps

I have an average rig, not the best, but not the worst.  An AMD Athlon 64 dual core X2 4600+ @2.41ghz, 4 G RAM, Gforce 9800 GTX+ video card.

Is what I'm experiencing normal times for loading saves, for what mods and machine I'm running?

Anyone have any suggestions or something I'm missing?

I really want to play this game and enjoy it, with these mods.

thanks!

I'm going to real honest with you right now.

I could tell you to use Optimizer Textures or some convenient ini tweak but that will only reduce your loading times by about 20 seconds of your 3 minutes.

So hard truth you need to own Fallout 3 to make New Vegas stable. Luckily Steams summer sale is going and its like 5 bucks for the goty edition. So get Fo3 install Tale of two wastelands and double check your mod compatibly on the sites forum (NVEC isn't compatible, FOOK and Project Nevada are, etc) , you shouldn't have any problems after that.

Tale of two wastelands is the only way your going to be able to fix your bogged up stability issues. It increases NVs stability by about 90% without heavy mods and 75% with heavy mods.

This has nothing to do with your problem, but you should update checkmeout (or rename the esp to just SexoutCheckMeOut.esp) or it won't work.

10-15 mins is not normal. Not at all sure what would cause it though; I have no experience with fook for instance so there's just no telling. Could be your merged patch isn't what it should be, maybe. Lust's oHud plugin also assumes the oHUD esm is loaded before sexout.esm so there's a small chance the engine adjusting that for you could add up to the load time. Other than that, you may have to go the oldfashioned way and turns some mods off to see which ones make the difference.

What size save files do you have? Are we talking saves where you've already done a lot, explored many places?

@cornbreadtm -   I actually just bought the FO3 goty version on sale on Steam just the other day, for that very reason!!    I had seen references to TTW making the game more stable, and I have an original disc version of FO3, but I don't have any of the DLCs for it.    So I just figured for 5 buck I'd get the Steam version with all the DLCs.   Have not installed it yet.

I've a  question regarding that.   If I install TTW do I have to start from scratch?  I always hate restarting, after I've played a character...  I realize I would have to reinstall the games from scratch, without NVEC, but if I did that, could I then load my existing save in?  Or would I have to start a new character?

@doctasax - Not sure what you mean about renaming checkmeout's esp.   The whole reason it is named that is because of your comment in the checkmeout thread -

Eh, I messed up the packaging again

Nobody really needs to re-download, just rename your current esp to match the name in the Sound/Voice folder or vice versa.

Three weeks since the last update & nobody noticed, heh.

I just renamed it, because thats what mine was named in the sound/voice folder.   Did I misunderstand?

Regarding Ohud and Lust, I did notice that I had them reversed from what they  are in the box where it says what esm's it is looking for, and I did wonder if that was a problem.  I will go ahead and switch them.

And my saves are about 10mb in size, I've just now gotten to Freeside, in the game, but not into the Strip yet, following the main quest.

I had a problem when I first tried to enter Freeside, and it CTD the minute I entered.   I started doing the oldfashioned turning mods off, and on and trying it, since it was a problem that I could duplicate easy, and when I turned off Ohud and Lust, it stopped the CTD on entering.   But then I turned it back on, and tried it, and it worked, so I didn't know it was a fluke or what.

Is there any danger in deleting my merged patch, and redoing it?

thanks!

Things were a bit hectic at the time with providing SSR versions for both my own mods, as well as tuning up Lust & sofo to match that too. Somehow or other I messed up the packaging during one of the updates. Main thing: the name of checkmeout's esp needs to match the name of the folder where the voice files are held, and your choice of SSR/SCR needs to be consistent with the choice for clothing eval. The latest update should be fine now - touch wood - but if you're confident that what you have in your install is like I laid out there, there's no need to update.

Not sure what the problem could've been there with Lust/ohud on entering Freeside; might have something to do with the scanner functions (horny approach etc), although it could be unrelated as well. There's always a slight chance that scanner-related stuff - Lust, BR, tryouts or whatever - messes with vanilla scenes where an actor is supposed to approach you for something else too. Been a while since I played, so can't quite remember if there's something like that going on in Freeside.

There's no real danger in re-building your merge, although I do usually advise people to have their character alone in an interior cell somewhere when they do so, & waiting a few game days for spawns etc to reset. It's not an exact science, but it's best to err on the side of caution.

The checkmeout does match the voice folder, and I have the SCR version of clothing eval.   All that does seem to be working just fine, occasionally I get a random voiced comment based on what my courier is wearing.

I switched the Ohud and sexout, and at first I thought it helped, after playing a while realized it didn't change anything.

sigh, at this point I really think I would be fine with the occasional CTDs as long as the saves didn't take so long to load.  Thats the thing that is getting to me the most.

Even if it was possible, I'd still tell you to start a new game. If you didn't your game would crash like crazy and that would kind of defeat the purpose now wouldn't it. You start off in the capital wasteland first anyway, so you wouldn't have to feel like you just did all of this a second ago.

Seeing as you haven't entered the Strip yet, I'm not sure if you are having this issue, but you can try New Vegas Save Cleaner. (Just for reference, I've already finished Mr. House's first quest line in the Strip and my save is only 6.3 MB without using Save Cleaner.)

From it's description:

The way the tool works, is: If a Reference is flagged as moved or Havok moved is deleted from the game including its data. this in turn, lets the game reset the item back to its default location, hence saving save file space.

(well actually the Player moved them, havok looks after them ^_^)

this tool can easily clean-up the following, just to name a few:

Doors that are opened and you did not close them
cabinets/containers that where glitched out of position
UNLOADED references
Weapons laying around
apparel laying around
bottle caps laying around
bottles
cans
broomsticks

the tool goes though your save file and deletes these references and then the game resets them to there default location, hence no need to save anything to your save file

You can manually search for an item if you know your FORMID
this is a static reference:
001176AA etc
this is a dynamic reference:
FF1176AA etc

The tool knows the difference :D, so just enter the FORM ID as you see it :D

You will be surprised just how many references are loafing your save file down.

Running on my 60Hr save file the tool found 16600+ references
the tool cleaned up these references and viola my savefile size dropped from 6MB to 5MB
AND THE LOADING TIMES WERE GOOD AS NEW!!!!!!

Your quests progress and other save data is not touched. This is purely for the References in game.

Well, after a very interesting but NOT FUN week and a half, I finally got a chance to feel like messing with this and seeing if I could figure it out.

(off topic, I had dental issues, and dentist was on vacation.  finally got a root canal today and feel much better already, but ugh..)

Anyway, I have some very interesting findings-

I took out all my mods, and started add them back in, one by one.  This time I was timing the load time with a watch, for accuracy.    When I started, my load times were around 2 minutes 30-45 seconds.

Took all mods out, went to an interior location, made a clean save, tried it with no mods, and load time decreased to 40 seconds, both with first load and each subsequent load in game after that.  game worked perfectly.

Finally got to the sexout stuff last, and just putting in Sexout.esm by itself started a crash on exit.  I think that has been talked about somewhere else, but just thought I would point it out and verify that without sexout, my entire load order listed above seems to work fine, no crash on exit.   Load times are still 40 seconds at this point.

Put SCR in, and voila!  it happened.  Load time immediately changed to 2 and half minutes, and loads from in game were going to take longer than that.

Put SSR in, instead, and load time is back to 40 seconds.

Frowned for a while, because the sexout mods I am running, I currently like, and some of them are still SCR only.    Then I noticed that there are new versions of SCR out.   I downloaded them, and installed, one by one, and didn't see any change, still 2 and half minute load times.  (finally ended with the beta 7/27 version)

So then on  a whim, I loaded the game with all non sexout mods, and Sexout.esm only installed, and made another save here.   Then tried adding that SCR to that save to see what happened.   Load time decreased to EIGHT SECONDS.

Shocked, I went back to my original last non test save in the game, took out all sexout related mods, except for sexout.esm, loaded the game (40 second load time), waited an hour, saved the game, then put all mods back in, and again, load time is now 8 seconds, can load saves from within the game again, (8 second load time), and my saved game size decreased from 10-11 meg to 4 megs!

So I have no idea what happened.  If someone can explain it to me, I would love to hear it!    Only thing I can guess is  that something in SCR was hung up, a script or something?  no idea.

cornbreadtm, I still plan to play TTW at some point!

jbravo, thank you for that link, I may give that program a try, just because it sounds pretty awesome.

Well, there seem to be a few different issues with SCR. I've been making improvements and dumping junk out of it and getting things ready to reduce it further by splitting stuff out of it into esp's as I have done with STD's, so it seems to be working better for most people. It also seems to depend a lot on what the PC or OS setup and what other mods are run too. I've hit a few limits on how much the engine can handle for some people but am also implementing a few of Prideslayers NVSE extras to improve the resource heavy stuff and simplify it.

I'm hoping to Promote 07/27 to stable in a few days time before doing some more major surgery with Drugs & Damage Swapping on the list. But am also moving house in the next 2 weeks so time won't be on my side till resettled.
