Getting lost in Editions

Hi,

After some years I decided to come back to skyrim once more.

But while I was setting up my mods I completely got lost in all the Editions Skyrim has now.

I have Skyrim installed but could install SE as well.

My question is now can I use Mods that arend markt as an SE version aka followers in SE?

Can I use SL in Skyrim or do I have to use SE?

Is Skyrim "non Edition" even a thing anymore?

Skyrim/Classic Skyrim/Skyrim Legendary Edition (LE) is the edition that originally launched

Skyrim Special Edition (SE or SSE) was a totally reworked version with lots of graphical improvements and engine improvements

Skyrim Anniversary Edition (AE) latest version with more "improvements" and engine changes

All three versions (LE/SE/AE) required different versions of SKSE in order to work, so you have to use mods that are marked as either requiring that edition or being able to be used across editions with which particular edition of the game you have installed.

Nope lol, you must have been away for quite a while.

What is a classic?

Your choices to be understood are LE/SE/AE, everything else needs to be explained.

LE is basically the Skyrim 32bit version inclusive all 3 DLC.

If you don't use any DLC you would have trouble to get mods working or find some that don't need any DLC.

Yes, I think I haven't played Skyrim for about 4 years now. Maybe longer.

I have all the DLC's but with classic I mean the version where neither SE LE AE or anything is written. It's just called Skyrim. That's why I got confused.

On Steam there aren't even any DLC's to be found but in Data Fils all .esm Files for the DLC's are there and I have played them with this game file, too.

So I'm using the LE versions of mods atm and it seems to work.... for now ?LVyrwC5y9wSX_dlQOGO-PT7uG7LB8Vj2plx5Cg8ak0mSdppAeG8op34akltTfyox8y3jBEj2Z8ZHbb3hf2iaQn3IhmK-rQ_xwJMwalXsHBYkwm7oIREUYY5gcPW-8R64yvQ_CX5a

There are only 2 major things to track here.

  • Skyrim (from 2011) has a 32bits engine and it had 3 DLCs sold separately, and later on as a pack (base game + all DLCs) as Legendary Edition. LE for short. The last official patch for this was made around 2013 and having all the DLCs is considered a standard. So nowadays you don't need to worry about specific game versions, all you need to know is if you have Skyrim and all its DLCs.
  • Skyrim Special Edition (2016) is a 64bits engine release which saw regular updates between 2016 and 2019. It has all 3 DLCs by default. The amount of updates in the past few years was a known issue since these updates break SKSE and SKSE dependant mods.
    • On November 21th, 2021 SE was yet again updated to a new game version (1.6+) and changes included some other base game files changed and additional content and an optional paid DLC to include even more stuff.

Here is how both games are listed on the Steam library

To view the DLCs, same as any other Steam game, right click on it->Properties->DLC:

When navigating the nexus or this site, you should immediately identify where you're getting your files

So all in all, if you have Skyrim: you're fine just stick to Skyrim related sections and sites. If you have Skyrim SE you may need to do an additional check to see if mods are compatible with SE or for your specific game version (you don't need a PhD, it's just keeping track of 2 numbers). And there are resources listing compatible and already ported mods for SE (ex. blue links in my signature).

To put it simple and not get technical, you have Skyrim (2011) installed. You are safe to install LE mods so long as that LE mod you install have all requirements met for it to work. This also includes DLCs. And since you have the 2011 version, you can avoid Skyrim SE. But, keep in mind that some mod authors that host their mods on Skyrim Special Edition Nexus may also host their LE versions as well because they are lazy and prefer it to be on one mod page for simplicity. So if there is a mod that you are interested and you only see a SSE link, double check their otpional or misc files. They might have a LE version up.
