Need to restart pc to play the game

Recommended Posts

Hi, today i wanted to play the game again, but once on main menu, the game ctd. It does works after restarting the computer. Any idea's why this happen? Win10 updates?

This never happend before and i highly doubt its a mod conflict because im already hundreds hours in game with zero problems and have not installed/removed any mods during this new game. All i have done is recoloring and creating outfits (mixing nif files with outfit studio)

Note: i have not installed or edited any files after closing the game yesterday. Also yesterday was able to play 5 hours straight.

Maybe temporarily try to install NET Script Framework from Nexus to get a proper crashlog. Default crashlog is useless.

Since Skyrim works again after computer reboot, it could be one or more files being locked by some application(s). File locks are broken after reboot. Skyrim really doesn't like when files are missing or not being able to open files. Just throws an exception and CTD without any information.

Unlikely cause but maybe do a system memory check.

I saw that behavior if I started Skyrim before Windows had finished all start up processes and loaded all drivers.

Try and give your system a bit more time to load before starting Skyrim. You could also start the Task Manager to see what processes need so long to be loaded.

The Steam client also is very slow to start up, starting Skyrim while Steam tries to wake up is a good way to get CTD.

Virus scanners can slow the start up process too, if you have a slow system already.

If your PC starts to get slow on startup it might be because of many programs that are added to autostart.

All programs that want to go online for any given reason will slow everything down too.

I use CCleaner to regularly remove unnecessary programs from autostart  and reduce the number of programs with scheduled processes.

Thanks, i always have less than 30 background processes and i also close a few things before starting steam and i just dont have that many programs on this pc since its mostly build for games and not private work.

Steam client might be the cause, but im not so sure about that. I tried it a couple times with few minutes in between before restarting. Also i started Skyrim right after the restart and apperently no delay with Steam there.

Im also on SSD and also use CCleaner like every time im about to shut down the computer.

But yeah, for now i keep this in mind and hope it doesnt corrupt my save files.

There is a difference between a cold start and a restart.

On a restart the system is faster ready, but for the "why" tech details we need a specialist ?

You could also test if you still crash if you double start Skyrim. For example if Skyrim crashes on first try, just restart it, should be stable then.

If that's true I would say not everything Skyrim needed was loaded already.

My uneducated guess is:

  • on cold start the basic graphic card driver gets loaded first to use with the build in graphic card
  • only after that the Nivida/AMD graphic card drivers get loaded
  • if you start Skyrim too early it will miss the needed drivers on startup even if they are loaded soon after

Same goes for the Steam client (starting Skyrim while it is still booting) even worse if the steam client booted up but starts to update various games you have installed.

It won't.

But there is another risk related to the Steam client. It's better to start the client first and after that start Skyrim.

You can start Skyrim and it will wait to load until the Steam client got automatically started, but I think that doesn't happen if you start with SKSE? If so Skyrim launcher will sort all your deactivated esp alphabetically at the end of your LO with uncertain results ?

Yes i did double start. Matter of fact i tried it 4 or 5 times before restarting. Also this never happend before. I have this game over 3 years and been playing again after 2 years this past week. I had basically no problems at all. Thats why i wonder if it could be a windows update problem, because i did update the computer 2 days back.

Yes i also start Steam first before Skyrim otherwise it just loads up the graphic settings or something.

But yeah, thanks for the quik response. I appreciate it!

I had the same issue, but one Skyrim restart was enough. Since I visit LL first before starting Skyrim the issue is gone altogether ?

Guess after years of neglect and only doing only basic maintenance my system isn't booted as fast as it used to be.

That's always a possibility, I had some folders write protected after a windows update and had to update read/write rights to some Skyrim folders to make it run smooth again.

But that was long ago, newer updates didn't hit.... wait I didn't play Skyrim for a few months now ?

When did they stop the regular updates for Skyrim SE again?

I mean if you didn't start SE for that long wouldn't you get updates that may conflict with the installed mods?

No im still on the latest version. Even so, i disabled auto update in the properties of Skyrim in Steam. Because we basically start with the script extender, it will ignore the update, if there would be any.

btw i started the game just a moment to see if it works after 'first time start up' and it seems to act normal again.

Hoping it stay like this.

Cheers
