Looking to Get Into The Sims 4

Recommended Posts

Hey lovers,

I'm really feeling the mods for the Sims 4, but what's keeping me from buying a copy of the game (yeah, I know) is the outrageous quantity and cost of the DLC.  I don't want to just grab a copy of the Digital Deluxe + Seasons, then find out later that I needed Dogs and Cats for half of the BDSM toys, and Islands for some massive mansion of debauchery, etc.  So which DLC (or bundles?) should I buy if I want to make a raunchy, best-of-LoversLab Sims 4 world?

Right now, I haven't bought anything.  I'll be holding off until there's a sale anyway, but the cheaper the better, while still supporting the dev team, even if it does roll up to EA.

Much love,

Rando

(Links to other posts I may have missed on this topic are also very appreciated!)

Well, that entirely depends on the mods you want to have in your game.

For example, WickedWhims (aka "the sex mod") does not require anything for its basic functions, but its strip clubs require Get To Work and there are some special activities for the clubs from Get Together. If you don't have some DLC, you can't use the parts of the mod that depend on it, while the rest will work just fine (e.g. no Get To Work means no strip clubs, but sex will still be possible).

Most mods will tell you what they require (in terms of both game DLC and other mods), so just search or ask for the stuff you would like to see in your game and check out the mods that come up. When it comes to custom content that has been designed from scratch, like BDSM toys, I think most if not all of them are requirements-free.

Oh, and if you're not averse to getting the game via Origin rather than Steam, you might want to google for Origin game and DLC keys. Some of the vendors have prices that are cheaper by 50 percent or more, compared to Origin's regular price (which is how I could afford an almost complete collection of DLC over the years).

I just got Get Famous DLC for 14 bucks on CD Keys rather than 39.00

Origin/EA half off sales are usually 19.00

Used Paypal and they send the code to redeem on Origin via EMail.

You have to download and install the free Origin Client first to redeem game codes.

Look up whickedwhims page, look at the additional content proposed there and the DLCs they need. I think the camsex carreer addon RedAppleNet needed Get to Work and the pornstar addon AEP Pornography needed Get to Work, City Living and Get Famous. If you are into zoo stuff I would hold the horses (pun intended) until County Living gets released on 22th this month and mods for that start popping up.

Thanks for all of the replies and info, everyone.  The community here is awesome.  Replying to each:

The game was on sale for like 4$ on Steam a week or two ago. So I would suggest waiting for sales before buying anything.

Yeah, that's what reminded me about it, but I keep a very strict budget for games so I don't go overboard, and I didn't have $4 left during their sale, lol.  I'll see if it goes on sale again this winter and just do some casual research in the meantime.  I feel like The Sims 4 is going to end up like the eldritch abomination that is my Oldrim installation if I'm not careful...

It's good to know that TS4 mods are designed to be modular, especially since I'm into, uh, many things.  I'm coming in hot from a pretty depraved Oldrim setup, so when I think mods I immediately expect sequential dependencies and lots of finicky code that I'll need to modify and stack into a neat little house of cards.  Since you obviously have a lot invested in this game, I'd love to hear of any mods that you can't live without but that also won't show up on the first few pages of a search.

I'm not against hooking into Origin's platform, since I'm pretty sure I can hook that into my GOG 2.0 client and it won't really be any different on the look and feel, so I'll keep an eye on their prices as we get closer to the next big sale event.  Thank you!

Thanks, I appreciate the info - I'll keep an eye out for the steeper discounts like this.

This advice is what I came here for.  Thank you.  I'll follow your guidance and start going down the rabbit hole to make a mod wishlist first, and then select which DLCs to buy after the fact to support those interests.  I appreciate the tip about Country Living as well.

That will be an empty set (because they're all well known in the TS4 modding community), but aside from "typical" LL mods like WickedWhims and Nisa's Wicked Perversions, I would definitely recommend MC Command Center. It gives you a lot more control over your game, allowing you to tweak things like population management and relationship progression (without it, there'll come a day when NPCs start disappearing from the game just because nobody talked to them during the last few weeks), while also providing fast and easy access to stuff that you would otherwise do via console commands (e.g. changing your Sims' skills and relationships or lifting some of the restrictions in Build mode).

It's a rather big mod, but there's some solid logic behind the way it's organized and you can always ask the folks around here for help, if you don't like reading feature documentations.
