Crash when starting a New Game or Load Game

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, it's another CTD issue. This is my first attempt to install some mods for Skyrim, and I was heartened when it worked the first time. Unfortunately, later attempts at starting a new game or loading the old one have caused a CTD  a few seconds after selection. I'm not even sure what the problem exactly is, whether it's the mod order or specific mods. Here is the modlist. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Considering that all your mods are for your Version of the Game and the load order worked before and you can start the game witht he steam launcher (try it), try steams Diagnostic and let it download whatever it things is missing in your game, after that start it with the normal launcher for the settings and then with script extender. Not a sure fire problemsolver, just something i had to  do too after in and de installing many mods.

1. Ask one of the moderators to move this to the Skyrim or Skyrim SE Technical Support threads. You're likely to get more help there.

2. The most common cause of CTD on start up is lack of a master. While I can't spot an obvious one in your load order you should start by using your mod manager (or LOOT) to double check that you aren't missing something. Most of the mod managers show a mod with a missing master in red (or with a red symbol or both).

The load order is a mess, to be polite. There are patches to mods (e.g. Enhanced lights and FX) after the patched mod but before the enhancer or the other way round... ELFXEnhancer

There is no bashed patch or merged patch to even out all those double edited entries in different mods.

You can manage that, but you have to read and learn a few things.

With a high counter of mods like yours, you should be familiar with TESEdit. LOOT will not work, because there are so many dependencies even the best LOOT list cannot manage that.

You have to learn how to make a merged patch yourself, or you will continue to crash. If you don't know a merged patch: It has to be done with Wyre bash and or TESEDIT. I'm using both. It is just convinent to me, but you should at least built one.

What is a merged patch? Skyrim has to know when to do/show what. This is done via the ESM or ESP files. An ESM should only have entries as a base and never overwrite another ESM (there are exceptions). You can think of an ESM as a framework. An ESP is allowed to overwrite those ESM entries. Now think about ELFX. ELFX will change the light bulbs in Skyrim. If there is a mod changing the light bulbs itself, the ELFX mod will fail. If the failure is critical, the script will try to solve the issue, but is not able to. If you have dozens and dozens of scripts trying the same at the same time, your Skyrim engine is running out of memory or trying to overwrite the same memory block and will crash.

You as a modder now have the "quest" to solve all those overwrites. They have to happen in the right order. Sort them Cinderella ;) like peas and beans.

unfortunatley it will take time. A LOT OF time...but give it a try. You will see... If done right, your game will work like a charm. After nearly 7000 hours Skyrim, I think I have a considerable stable game ;)

Shit... need another hobby for gods sake.

Thanks all for your help. It seems I was in fact missing a master. I installed Relationship Dialogue Overhaul again, and now I can get to the beginning of Alternate Start. Unfortunately, clicking the bed to sleep crashes the game during the ensuing loading screen. Would this different kind of CTD indicate that something else is wrong or is it the same old issue?

It is a different issue. A missing master would prevent you from starting the game at all.

So, does clicking the bed always cause a CTD or only with certain starts? (To test this it would be best to start a game and, before you choose where you're going to start, make a hard save. That way, if you get a CTD you will be able to load your save and skip a lot of work.)

It crashes with the vanilla start for sure. As for the other starts, it usually starts off fine but it crashes when I exit the starting building (say, in the Erik the Slayer start, it CTDs when I leave the inn in which I begin the game.) I think it's the outdoors that CTDs the game. What could this mean?

Usually that means that you have a mod (or more than one) that has provided a bad texture/mesh. Best to turn off mods that obviously impact the outdoors and see if that fixes your problem. As a side note, especially when dealing with CTD and performance issues, DO NOT run the vanilla start. It is harder on performance than the others.
