ChaosTheorist Posted November 6, 2020 Posted November 6, 2020 MO2 is perfectly happy to see meshes, textures, esp, etc. at the root of the .7z/.rar, recognizing that they're implicitly in the 'Data' directory for Skyrim SE. Is Vortex similarly intelligent, or will it whine if the root of the archive isn't a 'Data' directory instead of the files?

Because that is how mods are packaged. The format is assumed to be unzipped into the data directory (in the case of MO2, and I would imagine Vortex, a virtual one) so none of them have one included.
Grey Cloud Posted November 6, 2020 Posted November 6, 2020 No, Vortex doesn't need a Data directory in the archive.
