Strange Creeping CTD problem

I can only describe the problem I’m having as a creeping CTD. I can make a new character and play for around 4 hours with no issue before the problem shows up. Then when I try to save, I get a CTD. I can still play, I just can’t save. If I go back one save, it’s the same thing. I try to save the game from that save again and CTD. The only save that works is the one before that, and the problem shows up again not long into playing. I've tried looking up others with the same problem, but seemingly everyone who's having CTD issues has it happen as soon as they install a mod or something, not some creeping corruption like I've been having.
I’ve made two characters now with the same problem both times. I’ve spent two full days messing with this, cause I REALLY don’t want to have to speed run this game.


Edit: I forgot to mention, I've also tried a few solutions I've seen online.
I've tried killing my character and letting the game load the last save.
I've also tried using a save cleaner, only to find there was nothing to clean.

I've tried trimming my animations WAY down.
suffice to say, none of them have worked

It should be established whether the CTD is a matter of time, or of where you are . For example, you may have a CTD near Whiterun, regardless of playing time.

This is the first time I've heard about time-related CTDs, I think your problem comes from some conflicting mod, or from the lack of the usual fixes .

If the problem is on the Savegame, you may simply have something preventing you from saving.

Right, as far as location goes;
It first happened when I was saving near Wayward Pass.
 

After figuring out that I had to go back 2 saves, it happened again on the Windhelm docks. But I had been going into and out of the docks for some time by then and had no problems.
 

After starting a new character, it happened when I was entering the cave under Helgen (The game was autosaving).
 

After going back one save, I tried to save the game outside riverwood, only for it to crash.
 

I then tried using coc to teleport myself to the white room and save as a test there, only to CTD.

My guess would be:

> You hit the 65k string limit of vanilla Skyrim savegames. Sexlab and Vigilant add lots of string in addition to any other added mod and this can bring you over the limit. Crash Fixes v12 patches the 65k limit.

If you use crash fixes also use FallrimTools to check/clean savegames instead of save tools.

> if crash fixes doesn't solve the issue check if your SKSE co save works on save. Savegames consist of 2 parts: ess and skse. After CTD on save check if the skse part got saved correctly or if it was unfinished. Looks like that if failed: skse.temp or non skse part at all. I recommend not to use autosaves anyways and deactivate it ingame completely.

If the skse save doesn't save correctly you have a mod that fails to save its data to skse correctly and/or causes skse cosave bloat.

AH found it!

Smilodon v1.05 - An experimental backported version of Smilodon for Skyrim Special Edition. Since the backporting process is highly unsupported by Bethesda, this mod is at your own risk. Do not use this and Wildcat together.

 

Why are you using it? Is Wildcat too stable? ^^

Removed Vigilant, even though it's the biggest reason I picked up Skyrim again... At least until I've leveled up enough to be able to stand half a chance in the mod (I never raise my health above what I start with in rpgs. So I'm going to need decent skills in all my weapons to be a proper glass canon.).
 

Installed fallrimtools and followed instructions on page. There were 0 scripts needing cleaning
 

I installed the crash thing too and got a couple of loads that immediately crashed, but with a pop-up telling me to get rid of some animations. I went ahead and did so. It also told me I needed a skse.ini, which I had to download. In spite of all this, I still can't save in any of these more recent save files.
 

There were no SKSE.temp files. All the saves that I can't save have both ess and skse files. I'd also wonder; if the save file didn't save all the way, wouldn't that mess up me being able to load the save? Instead, I can load the save, but can't save anymore.
 

And I have no clue how smilodon made it on my mod list. I went ahead and removed it. Just don't know how I was able to get 4 hours in with no problems. I had wildcat on here too for a while, but then the crashes started happening and I got rid of it thinking wildcat was the problem. (Previous character. for my most recent character, I tried settling on what mods I wanted and didn't add or take away anything to see what happened)


though, I do wonder; could there be a build up of string at this point in the save? Like, getting rid of the mods doesn't get rid of the string already there? (and the saves I was attempting to clean still have the old mod list, so the cleaner didn't know the strings weren't attached to anything?)
It's kinda late and I need to head to bed soon, but I'm thinking I might try and go to an earlier save and see how far I get before something goes wrong.

Went ahead and tested an earlier save. Found one that hadn't hit that point yet and saved again. Then used the cleaner on it. Turns out it had 514 orphaned script instances. This may or may not be what it was, I won't know till I've had time tomorrow to play for an hour or so.
Kinda sucks too, cause my biggest pet-peeve is having to repeat myself. Nothing gets my blood boiling nearly as fast. Yet, with this, you have to invest large chunks of time just to figure out if you're wasting your time or not.
If it IS this, then this is going to suck. I'll have to level up my character while having fun stuff on the side, then uninstall all the sexlab files so I can play Vigilant and the bloodborne mod. (Another one I removed after the first character collapsed)

You got it all wrong!

They both can be in one LO, but it has to be stable first.

Crash fixes for example it meant to make the game more stable by patching the 65k limit and also provides a memory allocator.

Vanilla Skyrim runs out of memory quickly with all those mods installed and need a source of memory allocation.

If you loose overview over what you install it's the first step to get an unstable game.

There are many mods out there that have compatibility issues and need patches or a specific place in LO or have multiple requirements. Usually you find those information on the mod pages.

if the save file didn't save all the way, wouldn't that mess up me being able to load the save?

If you CTD on save that save is pretty much broken. Also if you regularly get a CTD on save I wouldn't continue to play that setup, because somewhat isn't alright already with the installed mods or the whole setup.

Lucky for you it crashes so early ingame and doesn't wait till you played 100 hours with that setup.

That's nothing. You can have a totally fucked up setup but you can play it for hours before the game get unplayable.

It's kinda late and I need to head to bed soon, but I'm thinking I might try and go to an earlier save and see how far I get before something goes wrong.

If you added and removed mods on a running game, especially if there where conflicts and bad combos already, I recommend to only test your mod combos with a new game.

If mods caused error before and you still use the save from those failed modding attempts there is no real surprise that you CTD.

Especially with experimental mods like backports.

 

If you add/remove mods and change LO:

> you need to clean the save

> you need to rebuild FNIS everytime

> I recommend to not change your whole LO everytime you add/remove mods, but either exchange mods or add them at the end of a running game LO

the string limit is unrelated there

if you remove mods you get leftovers depending on the mod. fallrimtools can remove the most obvious leftovers, but there is no guarantee that everything gets removed.

I don't understand yet if you have those issues with old saves (old = 40+ hours) or if you have all those issues early ingame.

If you manipulated your LO a lot you might need to start a new game instead of loading old saves with already failed mod experiments and leftovers in that save.

 

Troubleshooting with an already compromised save is rather pointless.

Yes that's Skyrim modding lol

Best to keep your LO small and only choose mods that aren't experimental and don't play around with your LO if you want a continuous game without experiments.

It is possible to experiment with the LO while playing the game for a longer time, but you need to know what your doing. Blindly playing around without a stable base game will make you experiment forever, because troubleshooting gets hard the more sources of error you implement to the game.

Sexlab, vigilant and I guess bloodborne are all bigger mods that can't be just added removed on a whim without leaving a mark on your save.

Also they all need a stable game to begin with, because they bring vanilla SKyrim to it limits.

Means you need memory allocation and crash fixes and install them right.

 

I have Sexlab and Vigilant installed myself on a 600+ mod Setup and it's possible to use them together, but again, a stable base setup is needed first.

(Just in case: Vigilant adds mostly creatures and those don't have MNC support, so don't be suprised if they hump you without a schlong ^^)

 

I also see you have all the MNC addons like HCOS. Those need a bit of care to install, check also the LO recommendations on the mod pages of MNC and HCOS => Loot doesn't help there a lot.

I highly doubt it is a good idea to use this with the newer MNC/HCOS combo, especially if you overwrite MNC/HCOS with it.

 

There are multiple ways to mess up:

Overwrites => depending on your Mod Manager you use (you are using one, right?) you have to choose what files get overwritten. Plugins load files, and overwrites manipulate files even before the plugin can load those.

Load Order => controls what plugins win and what infromation/modifications of those plugins get loaded. Usually the last one in LO wins of two plugins that change the same aspect ingame. Also plugin changes of the vanilla game get saved in your savegame, that's why it's important to clean your save after removal of a plugin. The more a mod adds/changes on the game the more information about that will end in your savegame and have to be removed. Failing to do so will first cause glitches and in worse case CTD.

FNIS => if you remove animations or add animations you have to rebuild it. If you change your LO you might want to rebuild it too

Sexlab => if you add/remove SLAL animations you need to clean registered animations of you get failed sexlab scenes

SL defeat => registers SL animations on activation, if you change animations you have to re-register them there too. Also it's highly unstable, clean it via MCM regularly. Careful with it's NPC-NPC settings

First; to be clear, I’ve not bothered playing my old saves. I already know they wouldn’t work. I had a nightmare of a mod list with a overhaul or two in place (Like T3nd0s Skyrim Redone or Ordinator – Perks of Skyrim, which I assume neither would mesh well with the Souls-borne mods). So instead of dealing with a 200 to 300+ mod rebuilding headache, I was attempting to start fresh.

Anyway, I woke up thinking I'd be up for this, but really I feel even less so. So here's what I'd like to know:


It's starting to sound like I'm going to have to just uninstall all the mods and start over, installing the correct mods in the correct order. Then start a new character. I’m reading into the “STEP guide” you shared, but I’m also starting to question which of my other mods are messed up and unstable.

The way I see it, I only have four groups of mods;

The quality of life mods like iHud, Light and Fx, the Extended follower framework, and weapons and armor mods.

I also don’t know which of the mods on my list are considered unstable. I’d like to keep defeat,  into submissive stuff, but I also didn’t know it was unstable. So I guess it’s got to go.


Are there any other mods on my list that are unstable, that I’m not hearing about? And any particular order I should be going about this? Like, Core first, then quality of life, then sexlab, then Souls-borne mods? This seemed so much easier the last time I modded this game.


Also, I’ve been resisting switching over to Special Edition cause last time I checked (A while back) it lacked a lot of the mods I liked. Would it work out better for me to make the switch or is my wanted mod list better suited to staying where I’m at?

Find a list of mods that suit your interests  and cooperating with each other is a little challenge for everyone.

The same applies to guides, who are completely wrong at point 2, but everyone reads it and forgets to use their own brain.

 

Nobody will give you a 100% statement on this.

It's like learning to walk. Step 2, then 3 and then step 1 - and you're already lying on your face.

So install what is really important.
And most importantly - does not require 25 other mods.
Step by step.
Use the console to: save whatever_you_want.
These saves will not be overwritten by Skyrim.

 

When I see your mod list I would ask myself hdtHighHeel.esm - what for?
Outdated (that's not bad), but very script-heavy. Why is it installed because some other mod says it is required - right?

And it's not necessary, and not for years.

And so it is with many mods. You have to decide for yourself whether you want to buy a cow because you want to drink a glass of milk.

 

My negative experiences are:

And I wonder if you use alternative ragdoll or weapon placements - or something similar.

If not, why then use XPMSE.esp and FNIS.esp in the load order?

Alright, I did a full cleansing. Uninstalled everything, then made doubly sure to follow every installation procedure to the letter. This kinda led me to finding out that I really did have some mods installed that were left overs from older times. That Heel one comes to mind. I think I had it installed for some clothing mods a while back, but if I had any before, they ended up on a previous trim list.
After spending a few hours with this (Took longer when the transformer near my house blew up in the rain and cut the power), I was finally able to get the game running with all the mods. Only problem was how long I had to play just to find out if I was wasting my time, which is why I haven't been on here. Been attempting to provoke the problem again to see if it was still there.
Outside of a single freeze in the mountains outside of the wizard place, everything seems to be working again. I've been saving this whole time and nothing is crashing. I think it WAS a mixture of the unstable mods AND the grandfathered in mods that had no point. Just piling up a bunch of useless scripts that killed the game.

Still, thanks for the help in getting this to work again. It's very much appreciated!

I'm playing around with Vicn mods too atm and I really love what I see.

 

About SL Dialogues: It's not of much use without SD+ or Puppetmaster

About SL Defeat: Actually with that mod I had pretty much all versions of "random" crashes, broken saves, clusterfucks, stuck PC. Sometimes it worked, most of the time it was a game killer.
