Script-based mods and your saved games

Now, I've had this problem for a very long time, but in the past it was minor and perhaps even ignorable. Until recently however, it has broken my game in subtle but devastating ways. Currently, I'm up to 251 active mods in my load order and quite a few of them are script-based such as Sanguine's Debauchery, SexIS, SkyUI, Better Vampires, Frostfall, and Wet & Cold just to name a few. The vast majority of my load list consists of armor, clothing, weapons, spells, and a handful of location mods such as Bathing Beauties and some of the Oblivion gate series.

The issue I've been having is that Skyrim appears to choke up with scripts. For example, when playing the game, in cut scenes within the game where NPCs are programmed to do specific tasks, like Delphine and Esbern moving through Sky Haven Temple, they sometimes just stand there and do nothing. Usually I would just prod them a bit (talk to them) in order to get them moving again, but this time they tend to linger around more and more. Sometimes prodding them doesn't seem to work. In the same manner, the sex or punishment scenes in Sanguine's Debauchery hang up like this every once in a while. Activating sex using SexIS does this occasionally as well. A game-breaking aspect of this is when the greybeards inaugurate the dragonborn after fetching the horn for them, in which they tell you to stand between them and just stand there doing nothing after you comply. Vampire lord (along with vampirism in general) and werewolf forms are both horrifically broken for any race that isn't a vanilla race.

The similarity between each problem is obviously related to the same underlying conflict. And before anyone asks, yes, I've tried disabling every mod in my load order in attempt to alleviate it without any success. The last thing I want to do is completely delete my Skyrim folder and reinstall a fresh from steam, so I'm hoping to save that option as an absolute last resort. The problem isn't just restricted to one or two corrupted saved games. In fact, every new game I start suffers from the same plague.

Finally, I have three questions:

  1. Would removing my scripts folder and reinstalling every mod dependent on it help?
  2. If so, how would could I clean my saved games given the persistent nature of scripts in Skyrim?
  3. Should removing the scripts folder fail, what else could I do to resolve this?

I'm only going off my coding experience with GECK in New Vegas, I've created a couple of pretty script heavy mods and have had to keep trimming back on execution times to reduce issues. I've rewritten a lot of my own code to improve things as I learn.

As Papyrus is new, it's possible Skyrims experienced coders are still getting the hang of how best to code some stuff, also newer script writers may be copying others mistakes or just doing some stuff the hard way. Complex scripts by nature create lag & crazy stuff at times.

I know exactly what you mean!! I had to reinstall recently because I had the 'shemale' problem, where I had a female head, but male body. This all happened when I upgraded to the new 'showracemenu' mod that came out. So I figured I would try starting a new game from the beginning to fix it...

The skyrim logo appears and I am in the cart with ralof and lokir and ulfric. We are travelling along the road and suddenly the imperial soldier on a horse behind our cart starts to freak out. He is trying to run us off the road and at one point knocks our entire cart over sideways!!! We are still moving, but it was an entertaining watch. We get to the gates of Helgen and suddenly the guard on the horse and the cart are flipping around all over the place and running into the closed gate... the scene never progressed because the gates never opened and both the cart and the guard on the horse are just shoving each other incesantly. Yeah, I figured it was time for a reinstall after that. LOL

There is no clean save. If you remove your scripted mods, you have to start a completely new game to purge them.

Skyrim has trouble handling 3 or more nonvanilla scripts at the same time. So if you have 3 mods that fire scripts when you are in combat, after a while you will notice a lag to the scripts. Now Frostfall and wet & cold have "cool" effects but they'll kill your fun faster than any other scripted mods since you can live without them. It's not that the mods aren't good, its just that they only add a little immersion to your game but only allow 1 more script to easily fire off with them on (remember it gets bogged after 3). So I hope you see what your problem is. Like you said Sanguine hangs and in sure if you used better vampires feed on corpses you've noticed that hang as well.

So get rid of frostfall and wet & cold. Get tropical skyrim, so your immersion doesn't take a hit and keep in mind the limits to SKSE and Skyrim when adding scripted mods.

Tropical skyrim does look pretty neat, actually. Although I'm having a tough time letting go of the snow. :(  Also, there's a saved game cleaner which removes all scripts from a game. If it does what it says and what I think (hope) it does, would it have a negative impact on the saved file? Here is the link: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/31675

My favorite character is level 71 and have sunk a lot of time into it. I'd really hate to start over. It would also be kind of awkward to hear NPCs comment on how cold Skyrim is when it's now a tropical paradise. XD

I said there's no clean save because there is no clean save. You can use the save game cleaner. But you wont have a clean save, I'll tell you that right now. Plus tropical Skyrim is new as time goes on people will do just like guard dialog overhaul and change the dialog. But honestly just start a new save. The sooner you find a load order that works, the sooner you can not change it and have this problem again.
