Outdoors Enemy Aggro is Borked

I've had this problem for awhile now, where enemies outdoors won't aggro properly. This takes the form of hostile enemies, most notably around bandit camps, not aggroing past certain distances of their camps, or past an invisible circle near their camp. Even after attacking them past this invisible circle, they would not aggro. Their red dots would flash for a split second, as if they were going to start attacking, yet they stay in a relaxing state. It was most notable with the Warzones mod installed, which I thought to be the issue. I have since removed it for a new game, yet the problem still persists. It's somewhat intrusive, but not completely game breaking. I've Googled the problem several times, trying different wordings each time, to see if anyone else has reported this problem, but always come up empty. I usually just ignore it, but now I figure what's the harm in asking the more knowledgeable peeps of LL. Below is my load order. I also have several non-plugin mods, such as Engine Fixes, and Display tweaks, and the likes. I can provide any other details if needed. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you might be experiencing a faction issue.  (at least it seems most likely) The only time that's happened to me is when some animation sequence fails at the wrong time and a temporary truce (SL) is called by its scripts while the deed is done, but since the animation fails (for instance, a third enemy group  - dragon, troll, whatever - attacks and interrupts the scene, or the script otherwise just borks for whatever reason), and I'm left stuck in that truce state (it;'s been quite a while, thankfully). Just like one is sometimes stuck without the ability to pan, or to move, or has some other "accidental" lean placed on their normal operational abilities - for instance,  FG has now started firing a "tm" at the beginning of its animations and often doesn't exit properly, so when it does fail to reset, the user is left with zero UI, not even console ***appears*** to work (although it still does, it just doesn't echo to screen) . Or the old Flame Astronach "dripping tail of fire" or "Draghur eyes" players were  sometimes saddled with under certain interactions (battle gone wrong in that case) 

 

For me, the answer is simple. open an earlier save before this happened.  The symptoms are easy to explain, but the reason why they occurred isn't.  But I'm lazy.

 

If that "Sword of Absolutely No Real Worth" or 3 flawless emeralds or the 5 pieces of ebony ore you mined, or the shout you learned, or the 3 dragon bones, 2 Elven arrows, some second rate piece of enchanted Iron armor, and a few sheckels (gold) means that much that you can't do it again, best wishes figuring out how to remedy it or continuing to play the game for an extended period with the problem still in evidence.

I appreciate your input. The old "load a previous save" method would not work, because this is an ongoing issue with my game. Even new games have this problem.

Hmm... well that implies a mod. Which one idk, but the fact that it happens even with new games is a dead giveaway it's not a glitch source.

Reminds me of the issues with MEZF if you use the all exteriors plugin. That mod edits encounter zones and apply them even in exteriors. The problem is there are combat boundaries, so enemies won't detect or follow you forever. Usually these boundaries are tied to the game cells (example a single interior location is a cell), but if you apply them in the exterior weird things happen (because the overworld isn't just one single huge cell, instead is multiple cells stitched together). I don't see that mod in particular in your loadorder, but your issue could be caused by a mod doing the same/similar edits the mod I mention does.

 

There is a workaround which is using Enemies follow me which makes so NPCs ignore combat boundaries . I wouldn't recommend it just for the sake of solving your issue (because it's just a workaround, not a fix really) and it might have unwanted side effects (for example enemies can follow you even through loading doors). But you could use that mod to check if your issue goes away. If that's the case, you can keep that mod in your game, or find a more permanent solution by checking your mods in xEdit and find the mod editing encounter zones.

I do actually have that mod installed, but it wasn't saved in that plugin list with ReSaver... odd. I'll give the Enemies follow me a try. Thank you for your observation!

Turns out adding the Enemies follow me mod did NOT fix my problem. Will now try the MEZF Vanilla version of the mod.


Update: Changing from MEZF All Exteriors to MEZF Vanilla fixed the problem. Whew.
